The problem with atomic is that it is not really the watch keeping the time. The watch is relying on the signal it receives to be accurate. The watch company can thus put the cheapest, most inaccurate movement in the watch and it will appear to be accurate because of the signal it receives. I have a bunch of atomic Casios. When I shut off the signal function they are way less accurate then my mechanical watches. For me, I want a watch that stands on its own without the need to rely on an outside source to tell the time. I fully agree that Bulova should add solar or kinetic to help keep the battery charged.

I don’t mind the shorter battery life in return for a smooth second hand and higher accuracy. Also, Bulova could stretch the battery life by adding solar or kinetic energy the way Seiko and Citizen do.

I've owned my Precisionist for twelve years. Bought it back in 2011 and have worn it every day since. I've only replaced the battery once so far! just this week something came undone with the date thing. basically when it hits the 24 hour mark it no longer changes the date, but considering the amount of wear and tear I've put it through I really don't find it surprising. Matter of fact, I'm surprised it even lasted this long! not to mention, once I set a time I never have to adjust except for when a month doesn't have 31 days and you have to adjust the date. Really love this watch and I have the indentation on my wrist to prove I wear it all the time lol. If I can't get this one fixed I'll just buy a new Precisionist without any regrets. cheers!

Solar-power Precisionist with GPS-satellite time sync. Citizen owns Bulova anyway, so the technology is there, just the parts need to be integrated neatly. The quartz oscillator of a Precisionist runs at 8 times the usual quartz-watch frequency (262,144 Hz rather than 32,768) and that might indeed be power-hungry if implemented sloppily, but such a watch would be overwhelmingly the most accurate. Strictly speaking one doesn’t need the high frequency of that Precisionist oscillator if the watch is synchronizing with the satellites so often, but I’d like such an obsessive devotion to accuracy.

The battery inside isn't all that big. It's a CR2016 3V Lithium. Has a 20mm diameter but it's only 1.6mm thick . . . which is quite thin for a 3V Lithium cell. The CR2016 is rated for 90 maH new, which isn't a huge capacity. The large diameter is deceptive. If you had actually taken it out, you would have seen how very thin it is. Bulova used the 2016 as the movement design didn't allow for a tall (thick) battery. New battery is good for at least 3 years. Just changed the cell in a Precisionist I bought 3-1/2 years ago in January 2017.

Last watch I took in which was the Bulova precisionist 98b229 the girl said it would have to be sent out for pressure test for water resistance. I never done that before. I said just go ahead and change the battery and O ring. I have had new battery in this watch before never had a problem with water.
