Love the way you worded it. "Depends what's important to you" All too many times the Tundra gets slandered for it's lack of features and poor MPG. I made the switch from owning two GM trucks that's didn't serve me well. After that, I choose Tundra for reliability reasons. Have never found myself wishing or hoping for certain features. Serves me and my family just fine!

Yeah true it also serves me and my business well but as a truck in 2021 they do need to improve mpg and payload to keep up with the others. There's always room for improvement

my 2011 f150 5.0 is sitting at 23L/100km, my tundra is sitting at 17L/100km. oh i have the 5.0 coyote knock as an added option, not even 60k mi on it. lovely. Ask me mpg vs reliability.... i will tell you mpg does not matter to me.

I literally bought this truck yesterday - and I work in the northern canadian mines you speak of. haha.

bought a 2020 Tundra for the reliability.. myself I'm not concerned about the "outdated" interior. Toyota makes the Tundra the way they do for functionality which for me is key. Great channel !

I stumbled across your channel while searching for some "how to" truck repair videos. You do a fine job being fair/impartial without copping tude. Hats off to you and yours, sir. You have much of which to be proud .

Most Japanese vehicles are lacking on the interior so I don't ever expect the Titan or the Tundra to really compete there. The nice thing though is if you climb under that thing I bet you it looks spotless...

We get to see the visualize the size of the truck when Jil jumps up and rolls over the tailgate and pops her little head up...😂...too funny. Nice review guys...😎

I agonized over what to buy for a year and a half; Tundra, F150, Ram, Silverado. For what you get for the price I was willing to pay for equivalent trims, I went Tundra. Things that pushed me over the edge was reliability, resale, and SIMPLICITY. The big 3 packages required me to get so many options I DIDN"T want in order to get the one thing I did want that it inflated the total price to stupid levels. Very aggravating. Wasn't that way on the Tundra. Had it a little over a year and I am still very happy with my choice.

Eric, I think the Big 3 have gone "package happy". I like some of the packages but I don't need nor want a moonroof. I live in the hot southwest, so staying cool is important. Glass always weighs more than a metal roof and it would cook my bald (ing) head.

Good review. I am itching for the 2022 Tundra to come out. I might just buy one to add to my truck collection! Then I could compare my 2018 Tundra to a 2022 model and decide which one to keep after a year or so.

Wow 😳. You do love tundras. I think 🤔 they are awesome traditional pickups. They are not as flashy as the big three. It does cover the basics well for a great truck.

Unfortunately though they dont make an ACTUAL traditional pickup like the big three. Which all three make standard, flashless work trucks. Anything above standard trim on all four look too fancy to me. Toyota also does not do regular cab. Which is about as traditional as you can get.

@@fartnutssupreme4930 They don't. I enjoy basic trims. I don't like frills at all on trucks and do not like anything other than regular cab configuration. That is what I grew up with. The rest just seem like family vehicles to me. Which is all well and fine. That is essentially what they are used for. But I don't have a family and at my age probably never will now. So I will be the eternal bachelor I'm my single man pickup I guess....😂

For Jill, the steering movement can be defeated in the settings by removing the comfort access. Once you get a good position, set it and you won't have to worry.

Tundra may still be “old school” but I guarantee it’ll last longer than any Ford, gm, or ram product... nice video as usual Tim...👍👍👍

Idk man, the f150 with the 5.0 and aluminum body properly equipped without all the gimmicky gadgets and well taken car of will last along time without the rust you gonna get on gm, ram, Toyota, Nissan.... not saying this tundra won't last, but saying you would guarantee is a stretch 🤔

I had the reduced payload sticker too. It's some added option. My capacity went down 23 pounds or something like that. Never figured out what option had done that. I had a 2013 so I didnt have the folding seat option. So they changed the bolts for the liner and deleted the transmission cooler.... :) Maybe that paid for the 3 piece bumper engineering? I do miss my v8 growl but I dont miss the gas pump. By the time the 2036 Tundra comes out I will be able to afford it used. :) Great vid....!! Jill is tiny...but pack a mighty punch.

I own a 2013 Tacoma TRD Sport. I think the 2021 F-150 Lariat is the way I’m going. New Tundra needs to come ASAP and be impressive.

My favorite feature is the back window rolls down. The 4runner and the Tundra do this.

One thing that I like about the Toyota is the ability to get the HomeLink garage door without having to go up to higher trim levels and/or high level packages.. That is nice. But, the thing I don't like is the fact that they don't discount nearly as well.

Thanks Tim and Jill! You did a fair evaluation and leave it to the various fan boys to defend each brand. Welcome to pickup owner world. My biggest takeaway was your comment that it depends on what you want. Jill, for $20K more you can have a jazzier interior, but is that your best return on investment? You can buy a lot of gas for 20K, for those who are comparing MPG's. I'm still driving a 2016 Tundra (51K) and when I get in it I know I'll get where I need to go, whether its to the store or across the state. But again, it's everyone's money and I don't criticize others for how they choose to spend it. Be safe!

People buy tundra for their reliability. Why would anyone buy unreliable truck?

I guess it's a good thing I picked up my TRD Sport at the end of January. Tundras are getting hard to find.

For me that would be a brand new truck. One of those and you are set.!! No need for any other vehicle. Tundras are hands down the best trucks. Congratulations , Enjoy.

My 2005 reg cab tundra was amazing. If only they still made regular cabs I would have bought one in a heartbeat.

I have a similar add on payload reduced sticker on my 2008 highlander. I too blame the factory optional running boards. That highlander has a similar payload to this massive Tundra.

I had 2 tundras...a 2000 and 2005...the 2000 was a rock, replaced a battery in 150k miles, 2005 had sensors ($$$) every 2 years after 70k miles plus batteries....when I went looking to replace 2005 2 yrs ago Toyota had not done anything to tundra and were asking MSRP plus options are very limited with Tundra....so I opted for another brand One thing my Toyota had that I miss is tilt steering wheel...independently tilts and I loved that....I dont think anyone does that anymore

Honestly, I have no idea why. It was “unlisted” yet some people found out. I can’t figure out why.

absolutely loved my 2007 Tundra crewmax. Recently picked up an F350 Lariat 4x4 which I bought because I wanted to up size and Toyota apparently doesn't want to build a bigger truck for me!

My last truck was a loaded '18 F150 XLT, and have about 10k miles on my new '21 Tundra TRD Pro. The Toyota is a fantastic truck, and will really enjoy my time with it. But the Ford is head and shoulders the better all around truck, in fact it's not even in the same universe. Ride on the FORD is miles ahead, and just seemed a step or two above in nearly every category except maybe mild/extreme off-roading. The Tundra definitely rides and feels like a 3/4 ton, which I like. Let's see what Toyota comes up with in the redesign, but likely back to a Ford for me.

We love all 3 of our Tundras. Wouldn't trade them for anything.

My Titan has the “cargo carrying capacity reduced” sticker from the factory also. I assume it’s from the factory adding running boards after the vehicle gets its certifications. So is this Tundra’s payload close to 1,000 lbs then if that sticker is reducing it further?!?

Yup. Payload is already low and now its lower.

Toyota Tundra is the best truck in the world. If you ever buy one , you will never go back. I have a 2007 Toyota Tundra Crew Max, it has never given me any problems. Everyone needs one.

If you lease or don’t plan on keeping a truck very long get a new Ford, but if you want to hold on to your truck then Toyota

@@jillciminillo My dad's side is Irish and my mom's side was Pennsylvania Dutch & ???. My great grandmother came over during the potato famines in the 1840's ~ 60's. Italian's are not the only ones who use their hands when talking. The Spanish seem to also have the same flair for expression. It does make it interesting how the world has migrated around. I enjoyed the livestream. Very educational as well as interesting. BTW: I was watching the two of you in the video and you do very well together. You add a bit of flair and pick up on the items Tim glosses over. I do agree with you about the pedals. My 08 Dodge Ram 2500 came with them and my wife is so happy about it. Her Jeep also has them so it makes it so much easier. Like you she is height challenged (4'11" 3/4"). I have to have the adjustable pedals on all the vehicles we buy so she doesn't sit so close to the steering wheel.

I’d choose this Tundra all day over the big 3. In fact I currently have an SR5 and am thinking about upgrading to the Platinum. For what you get, the price can’t be beat.

236K miles on my 2008 Tundra and still kicking.

Same, 260,000 miles on ours. We bought ours new in '08 and people still give us props on the looks. It's still running like it did off the lot. 😉

I agree and just ordered a $900 trans cooler. Hated to do it but I’d like to get 10-15 years out of my 2021. I’m still $$ ahead vs buying a GM or Ford

I’m excited for the new 2022 model Tundra but I will admit I will be very sad to see this generation go along with the 5.7L V8. Will hang onto my dads 2016 with 86K miles, still runs like brand new!

Sad, the interior looks better than the new GMC and Chevy.

You really think this top level Tundra Platinum has a nicer looking interior than a comparable new Denali or High Country? Makes me wonder if you have a bias either for or against something? I even found a 07 GM truck to have a nicer interior than an 07 Tundra and the pre-14 GM trucks interior sucked balls. Toyotas gated (or whatever you call it) auto shifter deal is like the worst ever put in a vehicle. I've always hated it regardless of the vehicle. On the other hand save the column shifters.

@@JROC734 seriously, please go look at the 1794 Tundra. That brown leather interior blows the High Country away. I may like the Toyota but I admit that all of them Copied the Ford F-150 King Ranch and it looks better than both. So no I am not being bias. Save the column shift you say? Well it's very well known that the new Denali will have a push button shifter. So I can't wait to see what you have to say about that. If it came down to the best interior we would be shopping the Ram and F-150 anyway, not the Tundra or Sierra. Now that is unbias.

@@willardgentry6624 I say GM going to a push button gear selector is stupid and unnecessary, but what do I know.?.? Maybe that will help sell trucks, but I'm not a fan of the Rams shift knob. I've known GM was going to do this since it's been public. Trying to get away from a column shifter is fixing what isn't broken. It's as stupid as when GM and everyone else who jump on the eletric parking brake bandwagon did so. The column is legitimately the best location and setup for an automatic transmission, and it makes for a great hand rest when towing. Console shifters use up space that could be utilized for something else. At least a push button setup is out the way of the console, but it's kind of corny and unnecessary. Save the column shifters. Toyota fans don't know what to think. For like 6-7 after the GEN2 Tundra was released all that the die hard, traditional Toyota fans would do was bytch about it, (and I've heard quite a few hating on it) claiming it was a POS, and nowhere near as well built or reliable as a GEN1 Tundra. I even had a used car salesman steer me away from a GEN2 Sequoia saying that the GEN1 Sequoia is one of the best SUV's in its class ever, but for whatever reason the GEN2's had issues and wasn't a good buy. Then around 13/14, and a 1 million mile truck hitting the internets everyone wants to claim the GEN2 trucks as the most reliable vehicles ever made. So what is it? Is it lacking in build quality with noticeable issues, or is it the most reliable truck ever? IDK, I've never been that impressed with them even in 07. Their drivetrain I've always thought was pretty good, but they just felt like they were a generation out of date. Their refinement felt more comparable to my 03 Lightning than a GEN11 F150 or 07+ GM truck. That doesn't mean it's a bad truck as your older GEN10 F150's and Silverado/Sierra from the late 90's/early 2000's were very good and reliable trucks, but they weren't as modern/refined/comfortable as the trucks that replaced them. Maybe it would of been different if Toyota had gone with a fully-boxed the frame, but again IDK. I agree the 1794 has very nice leather. I don't like the wood grain, but the leather is very nice. Again the GEN2 Tundra has never impressed me compared to everything else. I even preferred the GEN1 Titan to it even though the Titan was a cheaper feeling truck. Maybe its layout is too Japanese for me. I much prefer GM's simpler, better flowing interior lines. Really the only big knock with the GM interior is the 8" screen being small compared to Ram and Fords higher-end models. The 8" displays in my SS 1LE and my wifes Taurus SEL doesn't bother me at all. In fact rarely do I use them while I'm driving, and when I do use them I find them 100% adequate for navigation, or adjusting the climate controls, or changing an audio setting, etc. Point being is the GM's interior being lacking is overplayed. IMO it's up there with a 15-20 F150's meaning it's okay. Dodge just knocked one out the park with the 19 Ram, and GM didn't build as elegant or fancy of an interior on their new 19 models and everyone wants to act like they're a POS because of it. The new GM trucks are still nice places to be in with plenty of tech, the design is just not as visually appealing as some others, and some of their knobs and button feel more budgeted. That's really nothing new for GM though, but it's still overhyped by people wanting to hate on them. Really the interior of the 14 GM trucks was a huge leap forward for GM, and the new trucks are at least on par with the previous generations interior. With all that said I personally don't care to spend for any of the higher-end models. I would like a Sierra AT4 which is fairly higher-end at least in $, but I'm more of a loaded XLT, LT Tailboss/RST, nicely optioned Big Horn kind of shopper, and with what is currently on the market the GM 3L Duramax and 6.2L with the 10 speeds are the drivetrains that most make me want to open my wallet.

F150 has a 3 piece bumper design as well. Unfortunately I learned that the hard way.

I sold my loved Tundra because of the payload. I went over it severely all the time.

Great review. I’m a big Toyota fan owned a 2000,2005 and 2014 platinum. Great trucks never had any issues other than changing timing belt ls in the gen1. But I’m a tech and features person so I sold my platinum Tundra and purchased a ford. It’s a 2021 so no issues so far but it’s a no comparison to the tech and comfort features. From storage and charging ports in the back for the kids, to the creature comfort in the front. Can’t say anything bad about the tundra it took us to countless vacations and back home safely. But the ford does it with a little more comfort and better fuel economy.

It’s 2024 here, so I have the benefit of hindsight and the massive build/quality nose-dive that Toyota took in ‘22 which is manifested in loose windows, rattling, poorly constructed side-bolstering of seats, poor fit & finish etc., and main-bearing, blown engine recalls🙄. The ‘21 and earlier are now, unequivocally, the Standard bearers for Tundra. Precisely why I just purchased a low mileage, 1 owner, ‘21 Tundra Platinum coming off of lease. In my mind it’s timeless - absolutely love it…V8, 38 gal tank, all bells & whistles - Viola!!👊🏻

Nice looking pickup that will last you over 200,0000 miles easily (at 15 mpg). Just teasing. I had a 2002 Tundra that lasted 250,000 miles.

No way Ford will or GM will go 3-400k miles without breaking with that stupid annoying stop/start and cylinder deactivation. I’ll take less MPGs and reliability.

are you sure that is a 2021, aside from maybe some of the body aesthetics it looks and has the same options as my 2016 crewmax platinum, exactly by the sounds. weight distribution hitch should help with spreading out that weight across you axles, some one made an entire video about it and included all the math and weight per axle.

Yes, this is a 2021.

55K is a good chunk of money to spend on a vehicle. but if you keep it for the next 20 years, and with the overall durability and the fact so little goes wrong or breaks- on a per-day cost of ownership may not be all that terrible along with the resale values. It a very good vehicle for the money and in the end if it's what you want and like well that is all that matters. I am thinking of buying one myself, I just have a hard problem getting my head around that my first truck new out the door was 3300 dollars and it was a Chevy 3/4 ton with a V-8 and four on the floor. Now that figure would not cover the sales tax and registration and the other tack on BS when you buy one of these. I am seeing previous owned Tundras listed and the prices are hitting around 62k, it's nuts out there.

I drive a Tacoma - TRD Off Road 4x4...bought it new in 2019 and I now have 107K miles ( a lot of those in 4WD)...I need the smaller truck as I often am on small trails. My buddy is on his second Tundra - his last truck he put 480K miles on it and (about 2 years ago) sold it to a guy that works for his (construction company) and bought a new Tundra...that guy is now pushing 600K miles, while my buddy is pushing 200K on his new Tundra. While Toyota is DEFINITELY not up to par with Ford and Dodge on convenience features, newness, creature comforts, etc - some folks just want a dependable truck. Toyota may be taking the mantra - If it ain't broke don't fix it - to another level, but I certainly understand and appreciate it as I do the dependability of Toyota trucks.

It will be, just like the 2007 model! It kicked all the domestic junk is balls! Left them scrabbling for years to out do the Tundra, but only did in power bells & whistles, certainly not reliability!

I choose Tundra, best truck I ever owned. Never have to worry about it breaking down.

@@jhnde8495 Eh can’t stand Scotty and don’t have a Toyota myself but I know they’re reputation well and there’s a reason those that work on cars extensively or shops recommend Toyota if quality and reliability are your priority. The 4 years of rust problems compared to FCAs never ending garbage products are something I’ll take any day. Love the look and drive of the new rams but like all fca products there’s a reason they’re always on the bottom. Too bad hey really are nice trucks they just need a different company to design and build them. GM has great motors and decent transmissions but the rest of the truck falls apart around it sadly. Not much experience with Ford but they don’t design them easy to work on sadly.

Thanks the detailed review of this Tundra platinum trim. In addition to the lack of adjustable pedals, the missing grab handle on the driver’s side (front) is a glaring omission in my opinion. Baffling why Toyota doesn’t have offer it as a standard feature on Tundras and Tacomas. It’s a cheap change, and they could add $100 to the price to recoup. Without the grab handle, it makes for awkward (inelegant) entry or exit. If you’re not 6 feet tall, you’re compelled to grab onto the steering to hoist yourself up. My F150 has grab handles for each door, and it’s something that I relish everyday. Nowadays, truck is a popular choice for many individuals of all genders and body types. A grab bar for all doors promotes inclusivity and accessibility, regardless of body type or ability. It’s also for safety. It’s saved me from injury a few times during winter when the stepping bars were often slippery (think Canadian winter). When I slipped I didn’t fall as I my left hand held onto the grab handle. If I had relied on the steering wheel, it might spin and I’d fall. Small part, but hard to overlook if they don’t incorporate it as standard on the upcoming 2022 Toyota Tundra, especially.

I’ve asked numerous times about the grab handle and I agree, it’s lack is irritating. Engineers tell me just grab the steering wheel, it’s ok. I tell them the auto industry has spent years training a population of customers NOT to rely on the steering wheel to get in and out, now you want to change that?!? I see it going back in for next gen or I’ll be spending years pointing out its missing.

Forget the truck your wife is adorable; just cracking me up!

Reliability and resale. For god sakes, it’s a truck. Features won’t last on a truck. Specially a Ford truck. Keep it basic and make it last.

The new F150 King Ranch fits my wife at 5.2 better. It has a pull up handle on the driver's side, plus the petals move and an electric steering wheel. All of which can be preset on the truck and to an individual fob. Now with that big 12in screen, could they add a nanny cam for the back seat? Maybe the new 2022 tundra will have more if these new features like Ford?

ok. put a ram, chev/gm, ford, Toyota against one another for 2 years then observe what requires replacement for parts and electrical issues. My $ is on the Tundra. i own a 21sr5 with a 12inch sub and numerous numerous aftermarket items including 33 12.5 20 " wheels. love it!!

I want the next Gen tundra

2019 Tundra SR5 4.6L, I paid $25,000 US brand new!!!! Bought in Canada brand new, MRSP was $44.100, $8k off Toyota Canada, $3k off in stock discount, paid $34k Canadian dollars, at the time with the exchange it was $25,000 $US. Ching!!!!

It was strange. I’ve never had that happen before. It was “unlisted” then scheduled to go live on 3/17. Somehow people saw it. No idea why.

But every pickup should have a roll down rear window. Don't understand why it's at least not an option.

She is dang smart on her vehicles and likes the standards so she has style too!!! But I really like what she was saying in the last video about - she isnt going to cover what was just covered if she cant add 'something' to it. This is one of the biggest problems online right now and I really like her taking a stand on value.
