You won't believe this gorgeous home! Primitive/Early American

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today we are going into a beautiful, Early American home in New England. It's got 3000 square feet and is situated in the country. Michelle and Ron, the owners, are in the process of decorating it in a Primitive and Early American Style. This home underwent extensive renovations to get it to the beautiful place that it is now! Michelle would love feedback and advice on what you think she can do to make it more primitive. Leave comments below with your ideas!

What a beautiful home and so many decor pieces to work with! I think my suggestion would be to start by separating your belongings into "Victorian" and "Colonial" categories and removing all "Colonial" items from rooms you want to have a Victorian look and removing all "Victorian" pieces from rooms you want to have a Colonial/Early American look. If you have pieces that fit neither category, perhaps they can be sold or passed to other family members, unless, of course, they are sentimental pieces. You will always be able to find a spot somewhere for the sentimental pieces. Just as an example, you could move your Sturbridge lamp, tavern sign, large basket by the door, and oval stacking boxes from the room with the curved Victorian cabinet that you want to make a Victorian room. I'd get everything situated by style and then you will see what needs you have. Thanks Michelle for sharing your home with us!

How exciting for you and Ron! This is a small suggestion, no white candles, only tallow or grungy colored and light the wick of each one so it looks used. I have an Amish made dining table. It has bread board ends and stretchers around the bottom of the 4 legs. Sitting at the table encourages you to put your feet on the stretchers and is soooo comfortable. What an adventure you have ahead. You go girl.

First of all, your home is lovely....a wonderful canvas to work with. If you really want to go primitive, my opinion (I had to do the same thing) begin by editing out the Victorian....I know it's hard but it makes such a difference and as you replace those things with prim pieces, you will really move closer to that early American primitive style. I might suggest more wooden ware accessories, add some woven coverlets & early textiles, old baskets, lanterns, old leather books and pottery and you are on your way. Educate yourself on things that came from that period and then be on the look out. Best of luck in your journey.

My earliest family that I have found are from Kentucky , he was born there in 1803. In fact both sides of my dad's family are from KY. My great-grandpa was in the Civil War, and he was interviewed in 1924 by the KS state historical society, since he was a successful homesteader and proved up his claim . Anyway he voted for Lincoln in 1865! So of course I love Lincoln, and I also have a place set aside to display Lincoln items. I did take my granddaughter to visit his birthplace. I just love this house, a gem! Thks, Ann!

Well here’s a suggestion where they can start looking for new pieces. Try an antique show. We went to Ohio over the weekend and visited two shows ( not that I needed a thing!) that were basically primitive/early American. Dealers came from all over…even New England. We got to meet the folks from Walker Homestead. There were so many beautiful pieces for sale. The shows will be repeated the first weekend of November. And yes, I bought a few things….just s few smalls. Arnett’s were there and the Santas were gone in under an hour.

1st sell or donate all country cuties and reproductions, etc. You should see a big difference after that .

There is every possibility that the house grew over time. I volunteer in one where the original structure was 1 room with a sleeping loft over head built in 1793 then it was enlarged between 1813 and 1820. Please research you home records.

That’s how most homes grew back then… they just kept adding on. My home started as a cape and then they kept building out. Now it’s a maze where people get lost.

It just may explain the 1795 date attributed to the house lore.

We have 3 bathrooms....one in master bedroom, one on first floor and one on second floor. This is a good point! We'll show those in a future video! Thanks for your question.

The home is beautiful, but shes got to settle on what she wants. One room colonial, the next room is Victorian, with a couple of primitive pieces thrown into the mix, there's no cohesiveness to the house. Its what i do and i am trying to be careful to, one stay in budget and two stay within the same time period throughout the entire house

Yes, Michele....that is the plan. It is hard when you have some antique inherited victorian pieces that are hard to part with. I am going for the early american style

I imagine that the person who renovated it 15 years ago wanted something that would appeal to a large group of buyers. The property was an investment.
