You Won't Believe How India Made the Road Using Coconut - Incredible Road Technique

Ғылым және технология

In India, coconut geotextiles are being used to make roads in rural areas. Coir Geotextiles are 100% natural, bio degradable fabrics made from coir yarn. Let's see together the production stages from start to finish and how the road is made.

For people who still don't get the point. This is a method tailor made for the environmental and usage of rural roads of Southern India which receives heavy torrential rain for two annual monsoons seasons and then have hot tropical summer. So the roads here are destroyed mostly from fluvial erosion, combined by additional destability from expansion cracks during summer. Not from physical wear and tear from load bearing heavy traffic. And coconut fibers are one of the most toughest and decay resistant fibers in nature which were once used for making nautical ropes. They will not rot away for almost a decade, especially underneath asphalt where the soil does not have any microbial activity. As for the environmental impact of the fibers, coconut palms are native flora of coastal plains of India and are a staple in traditional South Indian cuisines as both oil, as coconut milk and as soild coconut meat. Even the cake left after oil production is used. Every single household will have atleast one coconut palm in their property. Coconut fiber- coir, is such an integral part of the culture of this area that their is a government body, Coir Board dedicated for the procurement, development and sale of coir products. The husk from which coir is made, will only end up as being agricultural waste that can only be burned because of its highly resistant nature, unless it's used for another products. Coir Geotextiles are extensively used in this area for slope stabilization, river Bank stabilization and to prevent landslides here.

This is nothing. India has already made 100,000 km of roads (including some National Highways) using PLASTIC WASTE between 2016 and July 2020. And Government is planning to increase its use further seeing as _every day_ 100+ km of roads is built in India (including 35-40 km of National Highways). So the scope for increase is immense. Every km requires 1 ton of waste plastic and 9 tons of bitumen. That is 100,000 tons of plastic waste that has been diverted away. The technique was pioneered by an Indian University.

Here in the Caribbean I use coconut husk on my farm to prevent soil erosion. After husking the coconuts I bury the husk in the soil. It helps retain moisture for the dry season and it gives the soil a dark color that's very very rich.

India has massive coastline, entire South Indian is a peninsula. It’s hard to say which part of south India is this from looking at the typography. India also have long history of using natural fibre and textiles. We have so many startup now producing clothing from natural fibre like hemp, jute etc. We have a history of constructing housing from natural products as well like wood, thatch and clay but looking at the extreme weather conditions from climate change, maybe that’s not a preferred or viable option anymore. There are inventions like making bricks out of ash, straw and coconut etc but Gotta find more solutions for that For sure.

This happened 2 years back. There are research papers providing information about how well and how much this technique works in different environments , typography and soil type. Also what are the limitations such as how much coconut waste is available and to construct certain amount of roads, how much needs to harvest if this needs to be done on a industrial scale. But that might create other biological and biodiversity alterations so, for now this is only done where coconut is naturally available.
