I’ve been in the industry almost 6 1/2 years now. Currently just landed a job making 155K/year. Along the way, I had friends and family that wanted to get into programming because they saw how well I was doing and how much money I was making. At some point, they all dropped out either because it was too hard or because they just didn’t have the drive. I did make it, however, and I honestly think it’s because I didn’t get into this career simply for the money. I got into this career for the joy of learning programming. Even today, I program in my spare time for fun because I love learning new things and I love building things. Find your reason and stick to it my friends.

The one thing that is carrying me through this, is I have coded on and off since I was in Middle School. I just had no structure at all. The fact that I now have a structure, and don't see a reality where I'm not coding, whether for free or for money gives me a lot of hope that I can overcome the challenges that keep others from turning this into a career. I appreciate all of the experiences people in the industry like you share. It's motivating.

The something that fascinates me more than anything is really difficult math. I can understand really difficult concepts and once I really get it and understand it my brain lights up and I feel so creative. But I’m so afraid of it honestly. I’m not sure what I would even do with the knowledge I would learn at this two year boot camp I’m planning to attend. They have the web development, machine learning, AI and virtual reality programs with projects they give to their students. I’m not sure I would have what it takes to progress beyond learning it. I’m not sure which direction I’ll go but I suppose I’ll find out!

I had a brain injury that put me on disability. It has taken me over a decade to figure out how my brain learns now and having a supportive spouse who lets me try out crazy things to see what I can do. My mother learned programming languages at 50 to work at HP in Houston. She is 60 now and still learning new languages. We have a lot of the same learning problems. I am so curious about how Android OS works. I love diving into it to see how my phone works and my tablet works. I want to learn how to code for Android stuff. If my mother can start learning code 10 years ago at 50 with no college or anything but the net to use. I can start learning at 40 with a cognitive disability and dyslexia. I am determined to find a way!!

I was in a LD class growing up and I have ADHD. I quit my job to buckle down to work on coding. I wake up at 5am and go to sleep at 11pm. I am trying my hardest.

I love this video because it makes me realize I am not alone in this. Getting constant rejections every day or not even hearing back really starts to make it hard to believe it will ever happen.

In interviews it's also really only about silently showing compatibility with the working philosophy of the way you solve problems and are enjoyable to talk to. And if you're Mac or Windows. If not Mac, lookup Unix/PowerShell and get used to that. The transition will be easier when you go to use Mac. Every company is a team, they already usually have everyone necessary to make the critical executive decisions, so new people need to have a functional awareness of a bit of everything beforehand and like to do something nobody else does that would be beneficial to the team. (Automation, TDD, features, cloud, etc.) The rest you don't know will be trained and faucet-ed to you as long as you ask what you don't know and the information sticks after the second time. You'll be fine as you expose yourself to a lot of different concepts but at least master a full-stack CRUD and basic git control. To be able to contribute to meetings or stretch goals is the standard daily routine. So to code daily is going to need to be a habit. After ~5 years (presuming a challenging career) you start to see all there is in what it is you're in. So mix it up mid way through, get a Rasberry Pi and learn about programming pins. Contract work might be the best for you. Find like an IT recruiter and seek the entry role recruiters. Lower barrier, sometimes higher pay but usually on par. The entry roles posted are usually in a supportive position to add to an existing project with your best talent and in a spot that you can't royally fudge up. Just keep practicing and work on a portfolio too.

And here I'm planning to switch to tech because I'm dissatisfied with my career choice. I'm 23 and I'm having existential crisis everyday which gives me immense anxiety and depression. I wish life was easy and fair.

This field is A field that eliminates all those that are stagnant. i’m 25 with no degree but I’m going to prove that I can land A junior developer job no matter what. Just believe in yourself! Stop overthinking. go to zero to mastery pick a FE/BE/Full stack course and thoroughly learn everything, do projects, create websites for free so potential employers can physically see what you’re capable of.

I've been contemplating about making a career change from trades to IT. It's been 5 years since I've found Chris sean. And now my first IT class starts this Monday. Thanks Chris.

I really connected with this video. I struggle with depression and anxiety. Growing up I have always been told I will never make it in life because I have a slow learning disability. It effected me very much in such a negative way but as the years went by I couldn't help but ask myself "what if they are wrong?". So I studied data analytics and got my certification last year on Dec but noticed it wasn't something I liked doing so now I'm studying front-end development online by myself and I really like it! I want to rush it due to life issues but my brain can only take in so much info till I burn out. I am very proud in myself. Seeing how far I am and how exciting this new journey is. I know I can do it!

The biggest thing is once you're "in" and have a couple stable years at a position you're golden and will almost be fought over if you are good.

I’ve worked retail for years. Your videos inspire me so thank you. In my previous job, I did e-commerce and part of that was troubleshooting two programs and I realized I love seeing how the programs interact and how what you input into one, affected the output in the other. It was so satisfying to see and for the first time in my adult life, I felt passionate about something. I keep toggling with the idea of boot camp, or go back to college or learn. But I absolutely lack discipline and consistency. I’m absolutely the binging type when it comes to things so I think I need to work on structure so I can get to the life I want like you say. I realize watching your video that’s my biggest downfall so thank you for shedding light on the elephant in my room. I’m going to try again, and accept failure as part of this process but have faith that if I put in the work, then I’ll get to see the results. After all, even if it’s not a lot of money, I just want to work on something I actually like for once but in order to do that. I NEED to put it the effort regardless of motivation.

Its the lack of knowledge that holds me back for now.... taking 2-3 hours to learn till I'm ready

You said everything I was hoping you would on this, and I couldn't put it any better myself. I decided to work in tech 22 years ago. It took me seven (!) years to get my first full time job, and it was a below minimum wage rip off. It took me 4 more years to find a decent job, on an actual team, and to be compensated fairly. Getting into tech is really a matter of not giving up on yourself and making a few good choices on how to go about it.

A comfortable learning environment is one important reason. Also, money. I quit my job to learn programming because it wasn't giving me enough time. Now I am more unmotivated that I was working because I'm broke and feel like I'm wasting my time learning while I should be out there hustling. I'm from Nigeria, so no stipends or anything like other fortunate countries. I've always wanted to go into tech since 2020. Been 2 years learning and stopping with nothing to show for it. I recently started all over again with html and css. On my way to react after leaning JavaScript. Already made my my mind that if I don't get a job this year or become sound and confident in coding. I'll be done with it. Yet again, I'm not putting enough time in it as I should. Investing in myself and all. It's really a limbo because this is the only chance for a better life for me. Almost 30. Life moves fast huh. Okay.. I'll stop now.

Couple of things, Your message is awesome and very positive. The tech industry is good, but you will have to grind for it. It also isn't all cake and ice cream. Even six years in your still on the honeymoon phase. In the beginning staying the course will usually win out not brains. Seen too many devs smarter than me give up and I drive in home by cranking. Also starting you may not get in the door somewhere, that doesn't you can't build stuff, websites, game dev, apps, chrome extensions, npm packages, freelance, and etc. There is more than one way to break in into tech.

I needed this. Annoyingly my gaming pc is my coding pc haha. I hate making excuses but I do wonder if my adhd and autism is making it harder to learn.. I’d imagine the adhd is causing me a few issues. Anyway I’m so damn close! I’m great with html css js, I just need to learn a framework.. I love svelte, but I need to learn react for a job, so I believe that’s my next plan. Portfolio is done too, just adding projects to it now.

Sound wisdom here, Chris. The benefits far outweigh the sacrifice. It’s not easy but completely doable for those who really want it.

Chris, many of your videos are inspiring. I am currently working in Tech, but I am working on my of becoming a Frontend Developer. Right now, I am trying to study about 2 hrs a day learning CSS , HTML and Javascript. Honestly just 1-2 hour a day is fine, but again depends on the person and where they are in their life . Again their is no golden rule. For jobs , you apply what you learn into your own build projects again am no expert just a beginner as well.

I'm dyslexi, too. When I was growing up. I thought I was dumb. But come to realize that a lot of the wealthiest people in the world are dyslexic. I really appreciate your videos, man.

Actually, one of my biggest fears is I chose the wrong tech field. I’ve been spending the last year or two learning to be a web developer and maybe two months after I first started I started questioning whether or not I really wanted to be a game developer or an AI developer or a pen tester, etc. when I first started, I only really new web development well. And I had a little bit of experience with it in high school, so it felt familiar. Also, I was under the belief that it would be the easier field to pursue. But now that I’m deep in it, I wonder to myself wouldn’t be so much more cool to be developing AI technology or hacking peoples computers for a living lol.

Great vid. based on the name and description i thought it would be pretty negative but nice vid.

Maybe a six-figure salary but keeping your expectation lower might help you break into tech. I'm at age 34, and finished a certification at a coding school that took me half a year ( had to repeat the first trimester, twice) and didn't have previous knowledge ( maybe "hello world" in python). And in less that 3 months I started working at large company which I thought it was imposible that they'll hire me because of my age, lack of experience, and all I had was a certification and BA in Music. So don't be discourage, and work hard because it ain't easy. Always aim higher

I’ve been waking up every morning at 4 am to teach myself code. Luckly I’ve always been an early bird and know that I can grind my ass off to get to my goals. I have a few friends that work as MS here in Dallas. And you are right. The salary and benefits are insane at big techs.

Yeeess that’s what overwhelmed me and had me thinking I wasn’t smart enough or good enough to learn coding 9:05. Luckily now I have a mentor to talk to when I get a bit overwhelmed.

I think fear is the worst one I have a degree, five years of experience, react, nodejs, php, work alot for brazilian companies but still think I can't apply for a 70k job.. Thanks for your videos, they help alot.

Advice to everyone learning; Wake up early , study at least 4 hours a day, actually finish whatever udemy or any course you start, otherwise you'll get disappointed

I've been wanting to learn to code for a few months now and make it into the tech industry. I live check to check. I'm waiting to get a better job after the summer so I can be able to save money to buy a new laptop because my current one is too messed up to use what I need to start learning. It's just a long waiting game right now..

I use The Odin Project to learn. I'm on the Landing Page project, after learning Flexbox. I'm sure you can succeed! I hope to finish that project sooner or later

I wanted to learn.. but where I live they're all required high scholarship if you want to be hired... so I don't know what to do

The saddest part is that I know how to program with most tech-stacks using JavaScript. I’ve completely lost hope in finding a front end job. I just don’t feel like I’d match an employers needs. Been at it for 4 years and even published a social media app to the App Store. Well done LeadAppDev

I'm sure if you keep trying, you will find something. I just found a full-stack job as my first job based solely on my experience building throwaway projects and my passion. If you have passion and are driven to learn in this field, and have enough experience such that you've built one or two good projects, you can definitely meet some employers needs.

That's odd. 4 years and no offer? You must have been searching in the wrong platform because if you kept learning and shipping quality products, you were bound to find at least a 46k/year junior position. Heck, even a non-paid internship within the first year just to have experience. Please review your skills and start sending CVs to all Jr positions.

I suffer from fear tbh. I really want to be more financially stable and have always been into tech. My fear comes first of my age. I am turning 40 this year and I feel that I may be too old to be taken seriously by companies or to even be able to learn this and make that career change. My other reason is that I have autism and not sure if that would be a roadblock for me. Any advice for someone like me? Should I go for it or not. An honest answer is greatly appreciated.

I don’t see why don’t try anyway. Me: college dropout. Dyslexia, learning disability and was in special ed until HS. You have nothing to lose. Why not try. You’ll regret it later for not trying.

See a doctor. Even if it means only once or twice. But make sure you really have anxiety. It could be something else. Once you get the correct diagnosis you’ll hopefully get the correct medicine and help you move on in life

Thank you, but what are some ways/strategies that you have tried so far to cope with anxiety without medicines because software engineering sometimes becomes so stressful. If we don't have the right strategies to cope with the stress chances are we might have a relapse of the anxiety.

I had that too.. that unable to go where ~ Im not scared because I dont really know where to start , its sad cuz I only hand 5 years before going 30 :(

I self taught myself to code, thing that's stopping me is I don't have a high school diploma or ged and feel like I wouldn't get a job the Job I have now I make 22$ and I'm scared to lose it trying to follow what I love

You should look into Dorian Develops he was on the same boat as you didn’t finish high school and had a GED he’s been coding for a while now and turned his life around his story is very inspiring, best of luck, you got this!

Hi, Chris! Tim Cook and CNBC claim there is a shortage in the job market for programmers. How do you think this weighs against the increased competition you say there is of more people trying to break into tech?

Less jobs in the market means less offers for devs which also means weaker negotiating power. There’s a shortage of senior developer positions, not jrs.

Do you know leet code? Do you need to know leet code for web development?

i would to get into software development. been doing the tutorials , building stuff. At the moment its kind of hard . when 150people apply to the same position. i can get a maintenance job at $30 bucks an hr verses geting a software dev job at 30hr. maintenace is certainly easier to get into. but im going to continue to learn software development.

I'm excited for my future in tech. I'm a junior AEM Developer and love it. The knowledge I have gained my first year developing within AEM is priceless. Luckily my company took a shot in the dark with me (no aem experience) and this past year I helped lead our redesign launch of our company website that included 15 locales. The resume I've built in 1 year I don't think could have been matched anywhere. Part of the point to this comment, don't let lack of experience prevent you from applying or pursuing a position. My company was asking for 3-4 years AEM experience. I had zero. My portfolio and interview impressed them enough to give me shot

@@alantinoalantonio There are VERY few PUBLIC resources. AEM is growing rapidly with larger companies. The sad truth is, to really work with and get hands on training with AEM, you have to work for a larger company or agency that has a contract with Adobe to use that product. I got extremely lucky, and my current company hired me with zero AEM experience. They were looking for someone local and practically no one local had AEM experience. My background is in frontend dev. Since then I've started learning backend and Linux. I guess my response isn't too helpful 😕 but there are some smaller youtubers who have great tutorials. Just hard to walk through them without the product under your control

@@TheMason7125 yeah, you got lucky, but similar to you, my passion which came through and my interview, as well as my experience teaching myself with various projects, landed me a job. I got extremely lucky because I didn't even apply with them. They reached out to me via LinkedIn and they're actually a very legit local tech company. I got super lucky, although it was obvious in my interview that I was confident, skilled, passionate, and ready to dive into a good job. So really although I only had some of the specific skills they were looking for, I had the right attitude they were looking for and got the job easily. Others can do the same. Just stay focused on building something worth seeing, but also be ready to shine in your interviews with poise and fluency in the lingo and you can definitely make it in.

I was learning how to code for 3 years and I gave it up I found it way too difficult especially javacript. I'm busy learning UI/UX design at the moment.

To be honest, in some countries, being self-taught in anything without a degree or experience, you will not get a job! I have friends that live in Canada and in Western Europe, and getting a Dev, Software Engineering or Network Engineer jobs over there is very hard because they value the degree and or the experience, and they look down on people that are "self-taught" as being a wanna be Dev, Software Engineer or Network Engineer, because you don't have the formal training and experience they want from a candidate! In the U.S., it's also very hard to get a job in any tech area being self-taught, because there's no track record or formal schooling to back up what you learned on your own! For instance, I worked at Google as a Software Engineer! You will not get a job there being self-taught! You need a degree, preferably in Computer Science from a big time university, with a big time Computer Science program, because you will be competing with top-notch talent to get into any of the FAANGS. I have never met a self-taught Software Engineer at Apple, Inc., Samsung Electronics and Google. My last Software Engineering job was at Nvidia and only met one guy there that was self-taught and he was considered a mediocre Engineer at best.

I get what you're saying that getting into tech is difficult because of the lifestyle that its compensation allows you to live. And while for people like you, all of the effort that it took may have been worth, it simply has not been the case for me, as someone who has been trying to land any position in tech with a CS degree for five and a half years, and a bootcamp about a year ago to try to keep my skills fresh. Working on personal projects, applying to internships, apprenticeships, and similar has never gotten me anywhere. At this point, the prospect of landing any position that uses my education, let alone makes more than 20 bucks an hour total, seems like an unachievable fairy tale now.

that is why I think going to college is good because it will make you competitive just because you will have a paper to show
