I mostly cover audio engineering related content ranging from audio plugin shootouts / plugin comparisons (acustica audio plugins, universal audio etc etc) to actual analog vs digital / gear vs plugins plugin tests via access analog and mix analog. I even include ddmf plugindoctor tutorials in my plugin reviews so you can be your very own plugin tester and experiment and understand whats actually going on under the hood. I also discuss digital music distribution from time to time and like to give my viewpoint on online music distributors such as onerpm and distrokid.
All of my audio blind tests involving music production software are conducted in avid pro tools 2021 which is my main daw and I also use HOFA blind test 4U as my blind test software. I want to put in a word for MGranularMB. All their main workhorse types are excellent, EQs/compressors/reverbs etc, but this is something else when it comes to heavy sound design. You get some great suggestions presented like your EQ one, with custom GUIs, but then under Edit is where the real power of the plugin is waiting for you, and it's ridiculously powerful. You can get the wildest, most complex sounds going in literally seconds.

    @@PaulThird Granular multiband. You can smear or scatter bits of the sound at different rates, either in a really dramatic way or just very subtly. There's individual pitch control, time and pitch randomisation and more. Not everyone is going to love it like I do, but it's great for getting some more complexity into synths, making silly spot effects, or just as the first stage of a sound design: to tease a sound apart a bit for further treatment with other plugins

    @@akagerhard I think you can demo anything Melda makes if you're curious. The presets with GUIs that it presents at first are a bit unfriendly in some cases, but they're also one-band so the more interesting results happen via your own hand in Edit mode, when you add multiple bands. I hope you like it!

    MELDA is (almost?) exclusively programmed by one guy, who sits in Prague. He knows what he's doing, but from what I've heard he's rather elitist and a combination of arrogant and ignorant when it comes to investing in something like a decent design, or a marketing collab. Maybe what I heard is wrong, you never know and I don't know him, so I really can't judge him.. but you're certainly not dealing with waves here. This is more of a one-man-show with focus on processing, not visuals or representation.

    Somebody else said that so I then asked about and was told melda is a team of about 5-6. Maybe like acustica it started off with 1 and then multiplied over time. @@PaulThird November 2020 he still was the only programmer according to himself, so the team of 5-6 will probably be doing something else - unless a lot suddenly changed. But yes, getting MXXX for free is nice. Still, if you plan on giving Melda a real platform on your channel by showing off exactly how powerful it is (sounded like that's something you may be interested in) a collaboration would be a fair and natural step and benefitial for both parties. But you never know, there are quite some characters in this industry and in medium-sized companies such as MELDA this is especially true. Fingers crossed.. life is full of crazy "random" events and surprises. I think you could complement each other rather well. But what do I know.

    I don't think people are afraid of the GUI, the GUI is simply ugly. It looks a little something like people in 1950 imagined "futuristic" designs - uninspired is an understatement. Looks matter, because they inspire and entice to play around and turn a knob. People who think looks do not matter are ignorant - this is especially true in production. I think this customizable GUI-option is the smartest move Melda could do and it will probably blossom into something truely wonderful once the audio-community starts digging into it and provides the designs Melda is lacking.

    using the royal "we" now, Paul? Loving your EQ, especially the addition of the auto-gain-function. Melda is not cheap and I really despise their GUIs, though it's pretty common consensus, that techniqually they are great. This little do-your-own-GUI thing is pretty killer though. What I do wonder: Can I fuse multiple of their plugins into one? I'll put it on my "want"-list, alas I don't think I'll get it anytime soon. CoreXXX would be my way, because 850 Bucks is way too much, considering I don't really NEED any of it. For me, it would be about the fun to build my own "plugins" like you did - and use the Paul Third Signature Edition Mo-City EQ of course. Arguably, if it lets me fuse their plugins it could be a time-saver though. It would then possibly upgrade from "want" to "need" - which has been known to set free rescources. PS: I noticed that Paul Third Signature Edition is damn close to PTSD when abbreviated

    I did but I just realised that we renamed it to mojo. Mojo is the analog function in mautodynamic eq that has the transformer harmonic style behaviour (the one I showed first in doctors hammerstein) I wanted to call it trans but the engineer I worked on this with felt mojo was a better terminology as he felt we didn't want to get caught up in any falsifying behaviour as we don't actually know if melda meant for it to be transformer based harmonics

    Yeah I'm pretty sure its just harmonics. Not really any change in frequency response but saying that it does interact with the eq moves so you get harmonic boosts related to the low bands so it'll be a combination of that as well

  • @akagerhard

    @akagerhard

    @@PaulThird ahh, now it makes sense. So it will add more harmonics where you boosted, less where you cutted? That's effectively "cutting" mud, relatively speaking, if you look at your EQ-moves. Even if it's just looking at the first 3 lower bands.

    @@PaulThird you ever think of developing a plugin?

  • @PaulThird

    @PaulThird

    2 жыл бұрын

    Nah sounds like a lot of hassle, years of learning and it's obviously not as easy as many think to code plugins successfully all by yourself. Tbh it makes way more sense to use the tech of somebody who actually knows what they are doing instead of having to deal with all the issues devs have ie daw compatibility, bugs etc Just look at kits first plugin. The neve only worked on protools, aliased and had convolution artefacts. Took them months and months to fix it. Now we have their moQ which has minimal phase oversampling that causes that high end roll off we see and also hear via the pink noise nulls. They stated today that they intentionally used minimal phase oversampling instead of linear phase oversampling due to latency and cpu.. Where melda doesn't have those issues cause they know what they are doing. For me to make plugins I'd need to be able to do it as good as melda, fabien from Tokyo Dawn, Raymond from fuse audio labs, softube, UAD, TimP (convolution) etc etc That'd take me years upon years of testing and coding/dsp learning to even get close to their level. Plus Id rather be a mixing engineer than a coder so yeah.. Melda mxxx1 active presets will be as close you get to Paul Third plugins haha

    I always cared. Been using these frequencies with a dynamic Q for years. It's a great EQ for fast broad strokes. In my opinion it's simply a clever band-selection and the proportional Q doesn't hurt for usability! Also a good EQ to learn..
