Welcome to Realms Revealed, where you can discover the secrets and mysteries of the most awesome fictional worlds with us. Today, we are going to explore one of the most iconic and memorable features of The Lord of the Rings: the inscription on the One Ring. What does it say and what does it mean? Why did Sauron choose to write it and how did he do it? How does it affect the story and the characters of The Lord of the Rings, and what does it reveal about the world of Middle-earth
The One Ring is the most powerful and evil artifact in Middle-earth, created by the Dark Lord Sauron in the fires of Mount Doom during the Second Age. It is a plain gold ring with no visible markings, but when heated by fire, it reveals an inscription in the Black Speech of Mordor, a language devised by Sauron himself.
The Black Speech is one of the fictional languages that J.R.R. Tolkien invented for his legendarium, where it was spoken in the evil realm of Mordor. According to Tolkien, Sauron created the Black Speech as a constructed language to be the sole language of all his servants, and he tried to impose it on all the lands he dominated However, he was only partially successful, as the language soon developed into many dialects among the Orcs and other creatures, and most of them preferred to use a corrupted form of Westron, the common tongue of Middle-earth.

There is no poetry in Black Speech and yet Sauron just dropped his sickest verse on his ring? 🤔
Sauron is an artist. An artist signs his masterpiece.
my belief is that it was not engraved mechanically, but rather manifested as Sauron put his power into the ring along with the spell
Pretty straightforward. The inscription is a spell, the invocation of an astoundingly comprehensive binding spell. Basically he’s asserting magical authority over the entire domain: Rings of Power technology. All participants are to be subject to this talisman. Inscribing the spell makes it as permanent an invocation as the item itself proves to be
The inscription IS the spell, writing it brings it into existence and makes it true. The only way to undo it is to destroy the "scroll" it's written on, which in this case means melting the ring.
Same reason you engrave an ID on stuff today. If you all threw your rings in a bowl at a party, you can prove which one is yours. 😅
The One Ring was a horcrux. Of corse JRRT didn't call it that, and it came first.
Thank you for these great videos. Was the change in audio quality just before 3:44 a stylistic choice? If not, just wanted to let you know about it.

Thanks for your support. It was not a stylistic choice.

The 3rd reason is repeated. Just letting you know
Had Elrond managed to sway Isildur to destroy the ring, we would have seen a very different third age. But eventually, a new power would have risen, disturbed by the Dwarves of Moria! What Elves would remain in Middle Earth? What part would the Black Numenoreans in the rise of a new power rising?
cause that font looks sick.

The ring added a hidden +100 to drip to anyone that had it. Frodo only got half of the buff when he had it around his neck, the exception being some of the few times Frodo put the ring on his finger.
According to Bored of the Ring it was in case it got lost
The script looks very similar to Arabic or Persian, it’s beautifully executed yet when spoken in the Black Speech it’s coarse, grating and harsh-as it was intended to be. I do wonder if any of the words mean anything in Arabic, Persian or other languages because I have noticed that certain words and names correspond to real names or words. Tolkien created all this without the need to resort to computers and such, which is refreshing.

The language is the Black Speech, but the script is Elvish.
