My late grandad signed up (too young) towards the end of WWI and was injured and saw some pretty horrific carnage but he was patriotic and was asked to join the Household Cavalry - and later he was was on slipper guard at Buck House for Edward VIII - then he went into WWII and cooked on the beach at Dunkirk. He lived, loved and fought for his country. He had sold his horse in 1934 to save his baby daughter's life (doctor's fees before the NHS) and as a result, my late mum survived and gave birth to a son and a daughter. These people had courage and determination. Now we see a clueless population weakened by propaganda and fear. All I ask is, that like Scott, Amunsden and others, we get a grip and become real people, not woke cardboard cutouts cowering in the cupboard in case we "offend" someone...... thank you for your character building and thoughtful presentation........

I’ve wanted to go on expeditions like these ever since I was a boy. My grandfather who was a hydro geologist spoke of his adventures like this man does, Very nostalgic. We would sit in the sun room he built and look at old national geographic magazine, we would talk of all the different places he had been, interrupting himself by getting up and bringing back with him some old maps or “artifacts” as I use to call them. My eyes lit up as we would trace through maps from where he had been, or as he handed me wooden carved elephants and a kukri from India, or his magnum and binoculars from his time up in the mountains. His whole house was filled with paintings and artifacts from different cultures all around the globe.

@Sniff back better yeah I wouldn’t doubt it, where ever he went he always made friends, in India he befriended an India sheik and helped his village/city find water much closer than their original source, cutting out the risk of being eaten by a tiger. The sheik was so happy he took him in for a feast and a wild tiger hunt. When my grandfather left the Sheik gave him tiger rugs, pots, artwork, and even his own dagger made blue velvet and ivory. My point is that certain men are immune to such scrutiny from the left. (I would like to think anyways)

To this day the British blame Scott's (the UK's) failure on Amundsen. Somehow Amundsen is responsible that Scott and the British had not been up to the task. The truth simply is Amundsen knew what reaching the Southpole would ask of him and his men, Scott did not and that's why he died. Know your limitations and act accordingly makes a hero, going beyond them and then blame defeat on a third party does not.

I'm always amazed by the 'stupidity' of Scott and his team (in a kind of chad way) that they had no idea how to survive in such conditions but Amundsen did. For instance most of the English would have made it had they used the correct technique of triangulating their buried food with 3 markers instead of one where it was buried. They simply couldn't find their food on the way back so starved

Also Amundsen and his team used sledge dogs that took care of most of the heavy work. Scott had dogs also but didn’t understand and trust them and also said that he felt sorry for the dogs. So Scott left the dogs at base camp and let his men struggle themselves with the very heavy sledges. Another fatal decision from the inexperienced Scott!

Here in Sweden 🇸🇪 we have one such famous daredevil that caused his own and his men’s death. Andree flew with an air balloon to the North Pole and they got stranded on the polar ice. They where found about 30 years later with note books on them about their hardships...

@@jai-dii-seeker3149 What a nightmare that must have been for them! Taking a calculated risk to gain something you want or need is one thing, just going there to see what it's like or because it will be a challenge is foolish. I recently saw someone very high up above the land and heading towards the nearby sea with some kind of balloon/ parachute type thing attached to his back. My first thought was what if he came down in a field with a bull or if he got carried off across the sea, going higher and higher. I feel terrified with a funny weak feeling in my legs just thinking about balloon travel.
