You've Crashed An F1 Car... What Now?
Спорт
When a Formula 1 driver has a big crash and is not in a position to remove themselves from the car, how are they removed safely without causing more harm?
This wouldn't have been possible without Motorsport UK and the Silverstone emergency service team, massive thanks!

This is what happened the first time Alonso retired. They pretended to be extracting him from the car in order to tie his hands and feet together and then he was whisked away to a remote island but unfortunately for the FIA he escaped and 2 years later showed up in the Renault garage.
Hats off to the attention to detail that the FIA, engineers, stewards, race marshals, medical teams and volunteers have given to make the sport as safe as possible. As F1 returns to Suzuka this weekend, 8 years since the last fatal accident in a race when Jules Bianchi skidded off on that track, we have to appreciate that the quest for safety is never-ending. Hats off, guys, hats off!

super interesting to see that the seat is actually used as a rescue tub aswell, i thought it was bolted down, and that theres already extra rescue belts installed

I've now seen 3 versions of extraction of the driver...all amazing and credit to the medical teams and marshalls but I still wonder how they do this in a case like Zhou's when the car is topsy turvy.
@alijahan
Жыл бұрын
in his case since it wasn't that hard of an accident (g-force wise) they didn't need to do this and he was awake and talking to them and i believe he got out on his own after the car was in a position in which he could do that, but for example in case of Mick in Jeddah they took him out like this since it was such a heavy accident into concrete barriers just to not risk anything.
@Banyo__

@@alijahan I looked it up just out of curiosity because we're talking about it, but a quote read: "Zhou was wedged and had no way of getting out the car himself and it took a long time to get him out of the car safely. They had to pull him out lying down.” That kind of backs up the images I saw, because all of them seem to show him wedged behind the tire barrier and then the next images are him strapped to a stretcher.

The scoop on top of the vac mat is a bit odd to me, we generally use a scoop to get people onto the vac mat then remove it. The seat being an extraction device is a very smart idea though, it’s like a useful KED.
Those cars used to be so much less safe... Kudos to all of the drivers, designers and technicians who have fought for more safety measures.
This is cool it shows how much work the safety crew of F1 does

Thats cool that they turn the F1 seat basically into a built in KED for extrication.

The "drivers"' suit could be a first draw if Kik sauber
Anyone know what medical basis there is for removing the helmet/HANS? Seems a bit counterintuitive given the first advice in a motorcycle accident is do not remove the helmet to protect the spine. I’m guessing the likelihood of spinal injury is much lower with the HANS in the first place, but it still seems a bit of a risk.
is this every wreck or only crashes that were bad enough?
I was more so wondering about the substantial economic repercussions.
Question- why do they keep the scoop on the Vaccuum mattress? When he's brought into the medical centre, he should be kept on the vacmat for treatment, or a scoop can be added to remove them at the time.

At this point, we are using the vacuum mattress as insulation and to provide some stabilisation. Once at the medical centre, the driver will be more fully assessed and then, if a trip to hospital is required they will be appropriately packaged depending on the transfer method.
@Domedica.
Жыл бұрын
As a Paramedic i asked myself the same question. There is no need for a scoop stretcher in the shown demonstration. Guidelines, studies and SOPs clearly favor the vacum matress over a board of any kind. Having the scoop on the matress neglects the benefits of the matress in form of moldability and reducing the Risk of pressure points and marks. I actually think it would be a better idea to use the scoop instead of the Green Board on Top of the HALO and laying him onto it from the seating Position, this was you are Not carrying him By the straps and reducing stress on his spine.
This guy is like the Tom Scott of Formula Racing.
romain grosjean did everything on his own
man... you're telling me mazepin had to go through this every weekend?
So when the driver is extracted from the car, his head and neck are secured to prevent upper spinal injuries. Why would you remove the helmet and HANS device and allow the driver's neck to be moved if that precaution is taken?
@mattamys
Жыл бұрын
With the extraction tests, there are two exercises they use, one being a neck injury and the other the lower back - and in this exercise (which you might be able to hear me say) we went with the lower back injury! They do also practice the neck injury on a lot of the race weekends too 😁
@scottsheldon9889

Getting the driver to remove their own helmet as in this case. Also checks the ability to understand and follow our the fine movement to do it. Also a driver will soon stop taking off their own helmet if anything hurts far. So you've ruled out two possible things that way

what about Zhou's crash? what would happen in that instance
You alright? That was a nasty hit, turn the engine off and wait for the marshal's
This is why they jump out the car as soon as possible. Wouldn't want to go through this process.
Oh, I thought they just leave them there
I wonder if the drivers go through this process to know what to expect just in case.
@jesuschrist69

I would assume the drivers go through the same safety drills as the marshalls. But likely not too many times in their careers. They probably watch videos all the time in their driver's meetings about changes or what not.
Seems like a lot of crashes end up ejecting the driver and his tub and the Hi-Vis Crew atomic wedgie the driver out.
1994 makes it hard for me to watch this.
Grosjean be like "hold my fireball".
Now how do you do it when the car is upside down?

Rescue crews have a range of techniques that they practice; inversion uses some of them, before this kind of extrication. Every incident is different, and the rescue chief decides how to approach each one, and which techniques to apply. I doubt any of them practice the worst case "driver unconscious, upside down and on fire" (that would be too dangerous for the team) but they practice all the bits and string them together as they need, in priority sequence.

Youve crashed an F1 Car.....What now? Option 1: Blame the car Option 2: Blame the wall Latifi: "Can I blame both?"
If it was a crash it would fall as trauma correct? Manual stabilization of the neck should be considered
