Project Zomboid has taught me that even having the right skills doesn't really mean anything in a zombie apocalypse. Because the biggest killer is ignorance. Even though you wouldnt have the skill gap of playing in a video game vs IRL, just not knowing enough stuff about what we are facing would kill so many of us. Even if we are highly skilled people and aware of the common weaknesses of zombies. Even if we ignore the deaths that you get from not understanding the game in a way that you WOULD understand your real life, you gonna die a LOT. Without a respawn that means most of us wouldn't last like the first couple weeks. And thats ignoring the fact that PZ doesn't show people being assholes as a possible problem.

@@TheJackOfFools To be fair, in a real zombie apocalypse... There would be no apocalypse, there would be an incident that would last about a week. When you think about it, zombies are pretty awful predators, and can easily be defeated by stairs because they will break their legs trying to get up them, and eventually they'd just decompose. They'd be especially screwed in places with extreme temperatures. If you could survive a few weeks without doing something that would get you killed, you'd win. Then you can go back to being tax cattle for criminal elitists.

You two would fit right in and there are so many factions that could enhance your role-play. Full settlements, military factions, bandit factions, or you could even just do exactly what you're doing except in a server where you might encounter some other people with role-play in mind. I gather up basic survival items in a duffel bag and deposit them in areas i believe they'd check, along with notes giving inside tips on where my base is "come to the place where we first kissed 7/12" It really does add purpose to a game that can otherwise be wrapped up before the power goes out.

Just started playing Zomboid on an RP server, Serious Survival Roleplay. Very fucking fun. Don't think I'll ever go back to single player. Having interactions with other people in this world is so thrilling. Never know if they intend to simply flick on PvP and initiate a robbery or simply blow you away to take what you've got. Plus the large factions, settlements, etc... So much fun. And obviously playing on an RP server obligates you to create a backstory for your character and play as that character the way that character would live and operate. Adds an extra level of depth and makes interactions all the more engaging and entertaining.

Same, I created a Breton character a character named Aliana Lithael, wrote a 3-4 paragraph backstory from her childhood up to why/how she ended up on that cart with the rebels. She was attuned to fire and healing magic from her elvish blood, and worshipped Arkay each and every day, as her mother was a priestess of the temple. I roleplayed it, and it was the most fun I'd ever had in Skyrim. I went to the temple of Arkay every in game day and worshipped, saying a little prayer out loud before accepting the blessing. I still remember the prayer by heart and will never forget it.

This sounds really fun. I only played for about a month with a friend and after that I started my second SP game, where I spent quite some time building up bases (constructed a large, two-story house with plastered walls, working plumbing and everything) so now I'm in limbo, cos I don't wanna start new large projects due to impending release of B42 sometime this year, but I still wanna play the game. This might just be the thing! I do have a small issue that (I presume) your character gets panicked at the start the same way a character starting at '0 days since.' I guess you could role-play that he was sheltered in some hunter's cabin for 6 months, ran out of supplies and had to make it toward civilization... so yea, thanks for the idea, will have to try it out. :)

I did a playthrough of Oblivion like this, where my character was an Unarmed purist who refused to use a weapon (though magic was okay) and was deathly afraid of spiders and bridges. So any melee or ranged weapons would be immediately sold for money. Also, any time he saw something that even looked like a spider he would frantically backpedal (usually into a wall) and once hitting something, "come to his senses" and sprint out of whatever building, dungeon, or whatever he was in. If he was every forced into fighting a spider-like creature, he would completely forget about any sort of tactics or magic and mostly just flail his arms at them. If he ever came to a bridge, he would literally walk for miles both ways to see if there was any other way across like a river ford or a natural span that could be jumped and would only go back to the bridge as a last resort. Even then, he would pick up heavy objects and place/throw them onto the bridge to make sure it was solid enough. Only then would he slowly, tentatively start crossing until he made it just beyond the halfway point, at which point he would sprint across the bridge in a mad dash towards "safety". It was certainly a way to shake up the average "power-level and gear-farm until X point and clear the map easily" playthrough.

It's a wandering doctor who's traveled to Knoxville to study the source of the outbreak and attempt to find a cure by setting various goals of going to the military checkpoint, each major hospital, and finally the hidden military base. I have him keep journals of everything that happens day by day - from ambient sounds like gunfire to even just what he looted that day. It really helps make the world feel more in-depth to me. I've used Superb Survivors a few times for it to make a settlement in the Louisville hospital, buuuuut they tend to throw me into the zombies more often than not 😅 All in all though, it's a fantastic way to keep the game feeling really fresh!

That's mostly why I got into the game. I am in no way a gamer, and I can barely get by with the lowest setting, hell, I struggled to even walk with the w/a/s/d buttons at first. But the reason I picked this game up was because it's so fun to make the little characters, and I get so attached. I've litteraly stayed locked up in a single room with a bitten character trying to find ways to confort them until the end because I really root for them (her name was Chester and I still feel sad about it). I guess that is also why I'm actually trying to get better at the game, because now I have Tamika, she's 17 days old and I managed to clear a bit of Rosewood as a whole after insta dying on loop every time I left the house in former runs. Honestly I would have quitted any other game but it's the opportunity to make little guys what's keeping me in as someone who barely understands the mechanics

I honestly don't know what I'd do or where I'd go in such an event, but I do have survival/bushcraft skills, land navigation skills, advanced first aid skills, cooking and food preservation skills, a little experience growing food, was a former Boy Scout, have a respectable amount of shooting experience ranging from archery (including making bows and arrows), handguns, shotguns, and rifles (most experience out to 450 yards, but some limited experience out to 1,000 yards). I'm an okay fisherman, but not good enough to bet my life on it. Haven't been hunting, but have taken hunter education courses to learn how to track and process game. Minimal mechanic skills, but I did take a year of Autos 101 in high school where we rebuilt an engine, so I could probably make minor repairs and maintenance to a very limited pool of vehicles (no experience with diesel or electric). The things I know really well are cooking and driving, as i drive for a living, and love to eat delicious food, but have the challenge of limited budget, so I have pretty much mastered bowl foods (soup, stew, and rice dishes). While I'm a fairly new shooter (started in 2019), I have a respectable budding gun collection, know how to reload my own ammo (including reloading primers, but that's something you don't do unless extremely desperate), have dipped my toes in gun smithing (still have A TON to learn), but know fully how to service and maintain the firearms I own, and the 3 guns I'd probably take (I have more, but you can only carry so much) are my 5.56 AR-15 (with the CMMG .22LR conversion kit), my 12ga Mossberg 500 FLEX, and for handguns, I know this may seem an odd choice, but I'm going with my Ruger MkIV 22/45 Tactical Lite, with suppressor (if you know, you know). The shotgun breaks down into 3 pieces (barrel, receiver, stock), making it a great backpack gun for easy carry, and then would mainly be used for home defense wherever I go. I would likely carry my AR-15 with the .22LR BCG and mags installed, running the same ammo as my MkIV, and due to the gas system setup for 5.56, it acts like a suppressor when shooting .22LR, because almost all the gasses get captured by the gas tube and work the bolt. It's quiet enough that all you're hearing at 50+ yards is the sonic boom of the bullet, which sounds like a snap. However, I would also be inclined to bring one of my knives (KA-BAR Becker BK9 is my top pick, of the knives I own), and maybe one of my swords (I collect blades, too), as well as a camp hatchet and Swiss Army knife. Most gear I'd leave in my car. In my car, I always keep roadside emergency supplies, such as a gallon of water, electric kettle that can plug into my car, pyrex measuring cups for holding and mixing boiled water, a 3 pound tin of sealed powdered peanut butter, first aid kit, toolbox with tools compatible with my car, full size spare tire, air pump, two-person thermal sleeping bag, a bunch of Mylar blankets, lighters, matches, flares, tarp, bath towel, paper towels, some toilet paper, mini fishing rod, Noco GB40 jumper kit (super useful, 100% gotta have, and have needed it), and finally, a Mestel SGE 400/3BB gas mask with CBRN filters and factory-installed straw and speech diaphragm (also have needed this during some forest fires). There's so much I have done to prepare for a EotWaWKI/SHTF scenario, but most of what I've done is fill my head with knowledge, and trained skills that would be very difficult to train in an emergency (like precision shooting). I've also addressed my introverted personality by becoming an Uber driver, so I've gotten very used to talking to complete strangers, and especially holding my tongue in the interest of civility. I can now walk up to almost any group of people, and within minutes, be part of that group, be they homeless ex-con bangers, to hoity-toity "high society" types, and everything in between. Surviving alone can be done, the reality is that's a brutal, extremely demanding way of life. It is far wiser to seek allies, as we are social creatures (even the introverts), and the more people you have united towards survival, the more that can be accomplished in the time we have. It's a force multiplier, and only a fool would forego forming a tribe, and doing what you can to be useful. Nobody lives long enough to learn everything. Best to find people who fill your gaps in knowledge and experience. Quality of life can only go up if you work together, and share in the same goals. So go forth, learn, train, and socialize... Or, you might be one of the zombie horde right off the bat, and if that's the case, don't worry about it!

@@MrAtomicDuck An interesting thing with building a community is you get to think about how it would look and its culture. Like the crate outside the metalworker, there are two folding chairs. On the crate a deck of cards and a machete. Why? Well sitting with the machete is annoying, but it would never be placed far away. There are caches of melee weapons, even if it is just nailed planks, spread out in the settlement. Sure everyone have their own but they would make sure they are able to fight at all times. The bakery, kitchen, metalshop and tool storage are built in a square with alley meetin in the middle. All alleys are metalfenced from which you can fight the zeds. One stair lead up to the roofs where they would make their last stand, they will never run again....

I've noticed so many people (myself included) mention slowing down is the biggest problem most PZ players have with playing the game. It becomes all too easy to slip into the role of some kind of speed runner in this game that it really takes away from some of the game's charm. Once you hit the brakes and take in the scenary a little bit and reqlly start to think about your situation from a realistic and practical perspective it really does change the game. Great video and fun little story you created in your demo. I really have to find someone to play with as my playthroughs are typically always solo. :(

What you described is what I do almost everytime I boot up the game and its so much fun. Lol My standard go-to has been a frantic survivor who tries to find a way out of wherever they spawn by making base after base and journalling on the way. Then when they inevitably die, I have the next character have their own story and stumble on said old bases after a time. Definitely going to change it up some more now though.

I started doing this some time ago and it totally changed how I play the game. I used to start characters, spend a few hours looting, get bored and start again basically! Making a backstory for my character, things he cares about, family, makes it a totally different game for me. For example my current character, Sully, spent the first two weeks searching for his ex wife and daughter. He didn't know their address, so he had to use the limited info he had to find the right house. Then I would keep an eye out for either zombies or survivors (superb survivors mod) that matched their description. Sadly he found them dead, and had to bury them. Right now he's looking for his older brother, again with very limited info, all he knows is he was on a military base before the infection. I'll leave little notes behind after checking each military base, I have him write a journal and make notes on the map. And everything I do is based on what I think my character would do rather than how I know its most efficient/safest to play the game. Loads of fun, especially if you're like me and don't do multiplayer. It adds back what I love about the early game...having focus and direction.

She sticks to watching Life and Living most days and finds comfort in it, but that changes when one day, when the T.V stops airing and she bumps into her radio, she hears what's been going on with her being locked away. From that point on I don't think she'd take it too well; She gets panicked from the sight of her own blood and has a sensitive stomach, but something in her locks down after a few weeks when she notices something. She's pregnant. Now it's gonna be her and whatever she has versus the world, and she has something to encourage her to go out and see exactly what's going on.

I did this with the RV Nomad run I just finished. Backstory was a retired guy travelling the back roads with his wife to fish when the outbreak happened. She died, so he decided he would fish in all the lakes around the map, before finishing at the lake in Louisville park (where they were married). Did everywhere outside Louisville, but when he got to the city he saw there was the checkpoint, and the city was too overrun for him. Decided to change his mind, build a cabin next to one of the lakes he fished early on (farms near Fallas Lake), and he retired to spend his final days there. Having the story gave lots of goals to accomplish, and made it a lot of fun.

Two police officers with different views. Hunter living in a small town etc Don't know if ill be able to make that video or even finish writing the story though...

@@MrAtomicDuck I only started doing it recently, but I've found it really breathes new life into the game and helps characters feel distinct. There's a game design adage that goes something to the effect of "optimization is the enemy of fun"*, and randomizing counteracts that perfectly. *rooted in the fact that the best games are about interesting decisions, and in areas where knowledge guarantees the optimal decision, there's less meaningful interaction with the game.

I've almost always played like this, and I really, really recommend trying it if you haven't already!!! :D It's the little things/details, like eating with cutlery, doing your laundry, and organizing your house that really make the experience and connect you to your survivors. Caring for your survivors will change the whole trajectory of your games! The only problem I've had playing this way is that it's been difficult for me to connect with other players while having this RP-oriented playstyle, as I haven't found anyone on my level yet, and am a little shy. Maybe there's an RP server for me out there, but while I really do like to get immersed and explore character stories, I'm not really at the point where I feel okay verbally pretending to be my character, which most roleplay servers seem to want you to. They're also usually very serious/brutal, and I'm not too keen on being violated by bandits, heheh. Plus, being on a larger scale server without knowing anyone seems a bit scary to me! But I think and hope I'll find my place/my person/my people one of these days soon, and who knows what'll happen then! I did just join the channel discord today, after thinking about it for months, soo, definitely getting out of my shell :D Nice to see another great example of how playing with someone else can enrichen your gameplay as well! Also Duck, if you're reading this, - great video as always! Hope you keep making more content with Loushy, it really warms the heart and motivates the rest of us to find our own Loushys!

For example if my character was a security guard, I’d still wear my uniform, carry a flashlight, and protect and live in a building that presumably would have a security guard. or if I’m a burglar I’ll still put on a ski mask when breaking into buildings while also taking any valuable items such as jewelry which you wouldn’t typically do in a normal run. I try to live as if I did before the apocalypse while still trying to do whatever it takes to survive.

Oh, man - I remember playing just like this all the way back in Build 34! I roleplayed a Muldraugh school teacher that was a terrified pacifist in denial - which meant no killing infected until crossing a plausible story threshold. I don't remember her name (it was probably a randomized one), but it went something like this: -- She spent the first two weeks hiding in her house tuning into every news broadcast for updates on the Knox Event. When hunger became a problem, her first instinct was to try and get groceries, and soon turned to burglarizing her former neighbours' after the first expedition into town went poorly. She avoided every infected person she came across, luring them out of her street and losing them in the forest behind her house (which got really dangerous as the hoard of lost bodies shambling in the woods grew). After day nine, she finally brought herself to put down a zombie after hearing a news report confirming that all infected individuals are already deceased. ... Not sure what happened after that, but it was probably 'death by helicopter event'. -- Gosh... thinking about Build 34 really makes me realize how much this game has grown in the last eight years. Try to imagine playing Project Zomboid with no cars; no metalworking, mechanic, or tailoring skill; a spartan weather system without fog, wind, weather fronts, puddles, water reflections, or seasonal shaders; no clothing degradation, insulation, or protection systems; no 3D character models with fancy animations; no interactive foraging; no in-game map (on a map with 50% (?) less buildings); and *no Steam Workshop.* Honestly, we are _blessed_ to have everything that's in the game today, and it's about to get a whole lot bigger come Build 42!

What I do, is I have a list of pseudo-quests, and an order to do them in, and I roll DnD dice to pick from each list. But I think now, i'm going to make lists of major debuff perks, major buff perks, RP occupation, personality types, background, with subcategories for things they might do, or have access to. [Roll for: Hemophobic & Organized, pick the rest. Roll for: Job, Chef. Personality, Assertive. Background, affluent. Roll for quests/order of things that this type of person, with that type of job would do, and when.] Like you two struggled to decide whether to hunker down, seek the military, or go to a lakehouse, I would pre-decide this with a dice roll saying "Oh this character has a family lake house due to affluent background, must search restaurants along the way, isn't afraid of walking right in, must wash off blood immediately."

This is kind of what I do where for all of the first week I will hunker down in (usually) my starting home, will spend time watching TV, reading books, sewing, etc. during certain hours while also going around town and securing supplies. Now I’m not taking these supplies, I’m just making sure they’re safe, there are ways in and out, and anything perishable is put in a freezer. really all I grab are things to keep me busy during the nights. Once the week is up, and the helicopter event has subsided I will start to work on a long term base project. Sometimes this can be a simple as make a fully self sufficient base, or as narrative as making a trader’s hub for passing survivors out of a gas station. This will be the predominant goal of this game, but not my end goal. Usually around the half way point in the base project, or when my skills are high enough I will start to enact an end goal project. For most play throughs it’s just getting a mobile base built up from something like a bus (I have that vehicle interiors mod) where I try to make a fully functional house with a large amount of storage, a stockpile of gear, and some level of leisure that my character can enjoy. Once this is finished I will drive to one of the end of road areas on the map, and then officially retire the character. Now sometimes the end goal project is something like raiding the military base, or some dumb goal that I can spend a lot of time on like a road trip to all the points of interest (this one usually involves a mobile base). Either way I finish that game either dying trying to achieve these goals or I get to have this character escape.

I hope future updates cater to this style of playing. I really want the stories created through the future NPCs to create the same type of atmosphere.

I like to give a name to remind myself how many characters I have burned through on a run. In this case, first Louisville Start Run. Name him Alphabetically and Profession: Art Rescue was born. What happens in my first few days? I get the map to the Museum of Art... It's mid winter and Art Rescue is still on his quest.

@MrAtomicDuck How did you set your spawn specifically in that house?

So there are a couple ways to do this. If you're on solo, you can use debug mode to teleport yourself to where you want to be, then simple restart your game without debug mode and away you go :) Otherwise, there are some mods on the workshop that will offer specific scenario based spawns.

A week ago I lost my old character who was just a clone of me. As my new character, Riley, I found my old character Will's safehouse and am now holding up there. Maybe Will kept a journal. Maybe Riley finds Will's journal and she reads about how he was going to go find that working car he found the keys for. Maybe after several days of Will not coming back Riley goes looking for him where he wrote he was going. If she finds him Zombified maybe she'll find the car keys on him.

I found that getting a working generator at base is one of the biggest causes of boredom for me. I can stock up on weeks of perishable food in a freezer and have no reason to do anything for days.

You: what would you do if the shambling corpses had the faces you knew from your day to day life? Would you be so ready to dispatch them? Me: oooh you have no idea

great video and will say you don't need to spend hours writing back story, the story will form itself from the situations you face but playing in a story way is far more engaging, just because i could go loot a gun store don't mean i have, i only risk for what i needed and i'm playing with the last minute prepper scenario mod, I'm writing almost daily diaries and keeping it chill, not only is it getting me writing for one first times in my life but it's keeping me engaged and keeping it fresh and about 400 mods helps with that too.

This is what I do anyway. My current character is a military veteran who woke up un the woods near Raven Creek. His partner who he went out camping to commence "activities" with was zombified and attacked him, he had to kill her. His first goal was to find anyone else and eventually linked up with some scattered off-duty military personnel in a base outside the city (Superb Survivors). Now that he has clothing, some allies, a weapon and an APC, he is taking his group to various checkpoints searching for the rest of the US army in the hopes he can help out wherver he can. What concerns him though it the utter silence on the APC's radio, the only thing coming through being the automated emergency broadcast system.

I love hunting for collectables and in my main survivor bases I am trying to make a display room. I think craft will give people goals as well. Am I wrong for being amused that you ended up in the farm house which is one of my favourite baes locations just outside of Rosewood, my fishing hut out side of West Point and you raided what is now my fortress near West Point?.

Obviously it won't work for regular people, but maybe create a back story and have a poll every 2-3 episodes and have them give you a next goal or thing that happens. Such as if you had a radio and someone you knew survived and wanted to meet in a certain spot. Kind of a choose your own adventure type thing. A poll probably wouldn't be great since you'd prepare a little bit for each based on the options. Or post the poll and don't look at the results until you start recording, so you only have 10 minutes to consider things before taking off.

I have coming up on 2k hours in this game, and I've never got bored because I'm always in the middle of doing something when I die. This is one of those unique games where being "not great" at it means you're forced to experience it at a slower pace. Each time you learn a little bit more and get a little bit further along. Being good at it, as you say, can be a downside and this is a good alternative method to try.
