You tube video on the “weight touch” that Gladys Barnes taught us Pianist Brian King

Ойын-сауық

A viewer, Sylvester, requested this video so here it is. Think of your finger pad as having little teeth in it biting as you flick your finger pad towards you one note at a time. Big tone, whole arm is a lever from your shoulder blades in your back with noodle fingers and full arm in keys.Total relaxation. Basket ball elbows up for the drop, and gyroscope balance on tip of finger. I hope these ideas help you. Pianist Brian King

You are very welcome Sylvester. You need to realize that it is all about using your relaxed body weight to energize the hammer into the wire. A lot of the tension will disappear when you understand what the purpose of the body weight is. Let me know how you are progressing. All the best to you, Brian

Great useful advice. I just started learning piano on my own, few weeks ago I am in my late 40, and I had to stop because my upper back and shoulder blade are killing me. I had one piano class and the teacher didn't see anything with my posture. I wish I had your teacher. 🥰 😔 Thank you for your amazing videos. Please keep talking about posture , hand and arm positions. I think it is more important for any beginner than jumping right into learning music and notes. If the pain is there, it makes, learning and practicing unbearable and we just give up.

Hi Nadia, You are so right it starts with relaxation and if you feel tension stop because you are doing it wrong and can cause serious injury. As I told another viewer, you need to realize that it is all about using your relaxed body weight to energize the hammer into the wire, without a stiff wrist or hand. Remember loose arm, shoulder, elbow, wrist. A lot of the tension will disappear when you understand what the purpose of the body weight is, giving the right amount of momentum to the hammer for the warmth of tone you want to produce. If the key goes down too fast the tone will be harsh and forced which you want to avoid at all costs! All the best with your new found love music making, Brian
