I collab’d with a pianist from my church. He doesn’t know how to produce but knows how to play the keys. I can play the piano by ear only. I told him how I wanted him to make a melody sound and he got partially there then I played the end part of the melody of how I envisioned it. And we did that melody together in like 10min before going out. I added everything else because I knew how the drums were going to sound and the direction I saw it going.

Those purist who say "theory tools are cheating", "loops are cheating" music or beats most of the time suck and the open minded beat makers who use an array of tools and resources are the one's who are making beats for real rappers and MCs. Being able to use a sick loop for a start or using pre-made samples or one shots as well as being able to write a good melody gives you an edge to be a great beat maker. Use whatever you want F what purist think.

I started making beats last August. I shied away from using loops and midis up until recently and now i clearly see that was my biggest mistake so far. While other upcoming producers that i found on Beatstars, Instagram and Facebook groups were making crazy good beats right off the bat, i was stuck for months trying to figure out how to put a decent melody, and that was quite depressing. There was a merit to that also, my melodies did improve, but at the beginning i had a feeling that if i used loops i will feel like cheating and even worse, i will become lazy and start depending on loops. Which is not true. Instead, what i should've done is dissect the melodies and try to copy them by ear, or even ''steal'' some of the ideas. Up until now i only watched tutorials on how to make melodies to improve, but i never really took the time to actually copy and analyze loops that i have downloaded almost a year ago. For a very long time i was depressed thinking i am not good at making melodies and loops and that i have no talent whatsoever, while in reality more than half of the producers, including big producers like you Navie, are using loops!

This advice is GOLD! I was once hindered when wondering what I should use and not use. Then I realized, like you say, all the provided presets, sounds and beats in apps and vsts are there so you can take (or "steal") whatever you want! FL Studio, as an example, provides demo songs precisely so you can learn and use anything from them. When I had that light-bulb moment in realizing all this, it was very liberating and freeing. No excuses now!

I'll be honest, this video came out in a perfect timing for me, I starded using Arcade 1 week ago and the results for melodies are really making big differences in my songs but I felt like I was "cheating" even though I was making the Drum/fx and Harmonization plus MIX&MASTER. Seeing this video really opened my eyes! Thank you very much for the tips!

I MusicLuv It! You hit the nail right on the head. I spent time with some of the greats like Maurice White (EWF) Quincy Jones and others of the yesteryear era and Wow have things changed. It''s not cheating really, it's evolving with the times. A whole new game is being played now from producing promotion and being an artist. YOU are your label and unless you have deep pockets or a large following, YOU better get busy and do the DAMN Thang yourself. Thanks a Platinum for this video. The SC.

Agreed navie, a lot of people try to be jack of all trades and they end up just wasting their time and becoming mediocre in all they do. I fell into that trap for a long time myself and now I'm just focusing on becoming a better producer these days. Thanks for the reaffirmation.

@@NavieD I chose to force myself to take on every aspect of production myself rather than focusing on my strengths. Instead of focusing on the compositions which were the main ideas of most of my tracks back then I held myself back saying "I cant use presets I must make every sound from scratch" I'd spend ungodly amounts of time in sound design, then I'd write the track, then I'd focus on mixing and mastering the track to perfection (or as close as I could get it) all in writing the song literally was maybe 1/4th of the time I spent on a track. Sound design was another 1/4th and mixing and mastering often took half the time i spent on a track. I could have used the resources available to me and cut down the time spent on a single track considerably. I knew audio engineers who could have eased my time, I could have reused sounds instead of making new ones for every track. I held myself back because I wanted to have a "unique" sound and be a "real producer" while my peers who used a certain number of presets and used mastering services excelled far more than I did. They could put out tracks at 4x the rate of me and that helped push their stuff more.

@@NavieD Absolutely! I think the Jimi Hendrix example is such a good shout. I've always had this feeling that I should be creating everything myself, but you're completely right, every time you focus on something, it means you're not focusing on something else and because music has limitless avenues you can explore, you really do have to pick one or two to prioritise. I'm just at the start of my producing journey (1 year in) and I find I jump all over the place trying to do everything and end up unsatisfied with everything. Now I'm going to just focus on improving my beats and see if I can make more progress.

Furthermore, I tend to use samples quite a bit; whether it's from movies, games or anime, I'm always sampling. I've never released any music as of yet since most of my ideas come from sampling and I'm worried some of my beats may get striked. So yeah. I was hoping you @Navie D, could may be enlighten me/us (your fans) a bit on the subject. If you have a video out already on this topic... could you point me toward it please.
