YOU Should Buy A Panasonic GH5, And Here's Why!

Ғылым және технология

One of the best video cameras ever made. Seriously its time to try and convince you to buy a Panasonic GH5 because darn it this is a fantastic camera that I'm going to try to convince you is worth it to kick your online videos up to the next level.
It's basically an all in one video production studio that can be used for everything from talking head narrative work, to some of the crispiest b roll, to legitimate sounding audio.
Its one of the best cameras on the market today which means this should be a pretty easy video!

@@wenyouevents8396 It's low on megapixels. It has 20% fewer megapixels than even something like an 80D/A6500 (on the APS-C side) and the A7III (on the full-frame side). It makes a difference. Furthermore, it's more difficult to get a shallow DoF with M43 because you have to use shorter focal length glass (by half, to be exact) to get the same composition. IE, you'd need to use a 25mm lens to get the same framing as a 50mm lens on a FF sensor. Given the same aperture on the aforementioned lenses, say f2.8, you'd be getting identical exposure and composition but _half_ the depth of field because you're using a focal length that's half as long at the same subject distance (the only things that matter when calculating DoF are aperture, distance to the subject, and focal length). If you are interested in doing photography, I'd recommend an A7III instead. Or, if you simply _must_ use Canon, I'd actually invest in the new RF mount (IE, the EOS R). The EOS R is disappointing in some ways, but the glass Canon put out for it is incredible. Word has it that there's a pro version of the EOS R coming soon that will likely fill the gaps left by the original. The RF mount is the future of Canon photography for _at least_ the next decade, so your money is safe there.

I currently own a G7 with the 14-42 kit lens but am considering a GH5. Currently I feel like the footage from my G7 comes out to shaky and ruins the overall video. I thought about grabbing a Crane V2 which would be the cheaper option. However, I feel like just getting the GH5 would make things more simple and I could always throw a gimbal on it. What do you think should I stick with the G7 and grab a gimbal or grab a GH5. I'd have to use the 14-42 on the GH5 until I could afford something else.

I slightly hate you for posting this video today. I have been considering purchasing this camera and I just watched your other comparison video yesterday. I've been on the fence about spending this amount because all of my gear is canon and I was afraid it may cause me some issues switching over. I have even been looking at the canon cinema cams but the main features im looking for is the ability for hd slowmo and great resolution. at the moment I have my canon 60D but it really sucks in low light and i have yet to use a mirrorless for comparison. I think i may go for the GH5S though for the better lower light performance. What do you think? Have you had a chance to use the S, is it worth it for the extra amt i'd be paying? My other option was the obvious sony comparison model.

If you had the need for an overall camera that can do photos and descent video in low light as a starting business camera, would you choose the A7iii over the GH5? I love the features and the stabilization of the GH5 but the AF worries me. I’m not sure if I want to heavily invest on a system that suffers from AF especially for weddings etc. I can try MF but I don’t trust my eyesight. Someone suggested to do photos with the A7iii and video with the GH5. That sounds expensive to me. What are your thoughts. Thanks.

  • @TheEverydayDad

I’ve had both and I used to be of the opinion if I needed good autofocus I would use the a7iii and if I could be behind the camera to use the gh5. Personally I’ve changed my video making style that I keep the gh5 in manual focus all the time and it works for me. But I’m not a pro so your requirements might be different but if you need rock solid autofocus the gh5 is not for you.

The Everyday Dad thanks for your quick reply! That’s the one thing that’s holding me back from getting the gh5. I honestly wouldn’t mind MF, but there may be some situations AF is a must like gimbal work etc. I would be so scared to explain to the bride why I didn’t nail the focus but on the bright side, she is getting a crisp out of focus 10 bit 4K 60p video. 😂. Any word on the GH6? I mostly follow Sony rumors and don’t know anything about Panasonic.

@@timgalletas3856 Haven't heard about a GH6. The last big Panasonic announcement (at Photokina last Sept) for M43 will be their new 10-25mm f1.7 lens, which they say will be like having 5 prime lenses in one. The other big Panasonic announcement was that they will be introducing their first entries into full-frame mirrorless cameras around the end of March with the S1 (hybrid 24MP, targeted for wedding photographers) and the S1R (47MP, primarily for photos). They will be staying with their contrast-detect AF with DFD technology. These new cameras do not have on-sensor phase-detect pixels like most other full-frame mirrorless cameras. Reviews of how well the DFD AF works with moving subjects is mixed - some say it works great, others not so much. But still worth checking the S1 out when it is released - should be a great camera and suited for your uses.

M50 is a great option but it doesn't have IBIS, I would probably choose M50 ovs G7 for vlogging since Canons dual pixel AF in 1080p, then get a wide lens would be set.

Love the GH5 been thinking about getting one again, though I doubt it. I can't argue the build quality is outstanding, great ergonomics, great specs, great image quality, good audio options, and amazing IBIS, great battery life. That said I think its overkill for most people. Most people won't need 10 bit, or even 4k 60p, or log. A G85 or G9 would probably suit most people more. Even certain Canon cameras could be a better option with the millions of lens options and amazing auto focus. For people wanting pro features the XT3 is a big contender with the better low light abilities, auto focus, and better high speed options. That said IBIS is hard to underplay and the XT3 doesn't have it.

The build quality of the GH5 is second to none, the only camera I physically like better is the EOS R. And I agree about the 10bit and 4k 60 but the problem with the g85 and g9 (I almost went with a g9 instead of the gh5) is the slow motion isn’t up to the same par and for youtube videos the slo motion is such a big deal. But I also agree that for smaller budgets there are canon cameras out there that crush it too, basically its hard to make a bad choice 😁 I CANNOT wait for the XH2 with the XT3 sensor and IBIS 😍

For 4k live crop... You can do the same thing in post if you film in 4k. Just film something (stationary) for however long you want, zoom in 200% (so you're getting a 1920x1080 equivalent crop) in your editor, and then set pan keyframes. Probably more useful to do it this way, since you can use the same static shot to create many different panning shots-- and you only need to film once.

Great video! I pretty well agree with you as a G9 owner. Wish I had a GH5 too. The trio of GH5, GH5s and G9 kind of reminds of the story of Goldilocks, which "bed" would you choose? For me the GH5 is way too much for me in video features I doubt I will ever use. The GH5s also the same and no IBIS at all but better low light capabilities. The G9 perfect for me as a mostly stills shooter. Hopefully, Panasonic keeps investing in their M43rds technology rather than switching totally to FF.

I think for hybrid shooters like myself, folks will be underwhelmed by the photos when compared to FF or even APS-C. However, if you can make peace with it, the quality of the video out of this thing is bonkers for the price.

If there is one BIG disadvantage of using the GH5, for me, it is about its size and weight (I use the 12-35mm lens). Although it's smaller and lighter than a full frame DSLR, it's still significant enough to become a factor as a vlogging camera, especially after a day-long project. Ideally, a good vlogging setup should be used with a monopod rather than holding the camera at arm's length (looks better on screen). Also, a flip- up display has its advantage that you can look into the display without glancing to the sides for a fully-articulating side display where your eyes will look to the side and not into the lens. Just saying.

Well, that depends on what you're doing with it. We have become so spoiled with digital that you have either forgotten, or did not have experience with film. In situations with inadequate lighting, we lit it, or we accepted the huge grain balls when we pushed film. Sometimes THAT was the look we wanted. If anyone hires a wedding videographer and they don't bring lights, they need to be fired on the spot. Lighting makes video look professional. MFT will give you all the performance you need if you work like a pro. When I started in sitcom, the cameras needed so much light that I was always surprised that the actors didn't just burst into flame. Lighting makes videos stunning, not cameras.

@@CallMeChato The thing is now we have cameras that give us a decent result with natural low light for media like KZread or twitch, of course it would be ideal to have a 2 1k watts lights, a few led panels, a 5k watts, and a freaking generator strong enough to power that anywhere you go, sure, I'm a video producer, I did produced a few thousand commercials for TV and internet, plus political campaigns and a few series here in Brazil, and yes I have a budget for lights if I'm working on a commercial or anything like it, but for KZread are you really gonna purchase a shit ton of lights? Let's say you spend what a wedding photographer do, are you gonna carry this shit wherever you go? Really? Because a wedding photographer knows pretty damn well what he needs and how he'll handle the load after dozens and dozens of weddings of experience, normal people on the other hand, most likely, will have a couple of very well lit videos in the beginning, and the rest will be shit, because they can't carry all that shit around, or just don't want to, in a sitcom or a movie or anything professional you will have a ton of lights for sure, but guess what, you'll have a ton of people dealing with the lights, grips, electricians, camera crew, dp, and even the freaking director just to tune that shit properly, for normal content is far far FAR better to have a camera that has decent enough low light performance for normal day to day content, at least for the vast majority of people.

@@CallMeChato is the gh5 a good câmera for the price? Sure, if you know where you are getting into, you can for sure have much better videos vloging with a Canon 200d for much less, and if you want something more robust maybe a 80d, if you feel you can handle a 6d Mark ii, all under the price of a used gh5, nikon has also excellent cameras in this range bracket but the auto focus is still tracking being canon and for youtube that's a big thing, of course its an apples to oranges comparison, they are cameras in different brackets, but for youtube content? I dare say they are a better investment, unless of course you are really invested in becoming an indie director, lol.

Cause it is not meant for photography. It's a multi-aspect-ratio sensor for a wider field of view (like the GH2) and reducing the MP means bigger sensor cells to get much better low light performance. That the same with the Sony a7s. It has 12MP to get these incredible low light performance. Larger pixels just do a better job in low light. A camera, that is made primarily for video don't need too much pixels, because it must be downscaled anyway.

Phones have become so good that i cant justify paying 1k on a canon 80D or t7i or something, while there are many advantages like detail, sharpness bokeh, lenses, optics, sensor size, image quality, etc. I still feel like there isnt enough advantages but with the a7iii its a Beast! The downscaled 4k is great! The full frame is bokeh amazing even at f.5.6! Theres so many advantages of the a7iii over a phone. For me the GH5 barely passes my standards because of the 4k 60 and other aspect I listed above.
