My advice is: just choose a motorcycle that you like a lot and commit to it. I wasted too much time worrying about stuff that in the end didn't really matter. Ended up buying a cheapo chinese 200cc dual sport and i freaking love it and if you ask an expert they could probably list how many things sucks about my bike, but here's the thing, i don't care, the thing works and it makes me happy. Just buy bike that works and that is nice for your budget and have fun

Motorcycles are like significant others. Your first will be selected mostly based on convenience of access. All of the motorcycles in your past did something you remember fondly, and something that irritated you. Newness is a really fun phase, followed by a growing desire to improve, and then upgrade. None of them are perfect, all are fun.

Nothing wrong with electric. I built a 38 mph tops 48v 1000 watt hub motor ebike 11 years ago. I used 4 12v sla batteries. I got tired of buying new batteries so instead of buying a 700 dollar lithium battery from China I bought a 150cc scooter. It has a CVT automatic transmission, better range, power and is way faster to fuel up instead of charging batteries for 5 hours. If the ebike is all you need stick with it. I suggest you try out some small engines from 50cc to 125 to 150 up before deciding on a gas bike if you want to upgrade.

I spent 6 years on a Rebel 250, and it is a great bike, but I also now routine travel at 60-70 mph and that put a lot of strain on me (numbness from vibration) and the bike running it topped out along 60-65 mph speed limit stretches of road (the 250 tops out at 72-73 mph). I can't find an SE anywhere, but can pull the trigger on a white 500 ABS at my local dealership. Love it when Yammie gets serious… and this video was a long time coming!! I just bought my 3rd bike it’s a 2007 FZ6 and my previous two were a 2006 Ninja 250 and then a 2007 Ninja 650 and I’m still getting used to the i4 power curve. My point is that when I bought my first one all I did was look at Facebook posts and looked for a bike in my price range and went for it! The point is to get on two wheel and you will find your way down the line. Now after 3 bikes I know that I like sport bikes but not the supersport type that is super leaned over and also I do lots of highway riding so I need a front faring so that kind of rules out nakeds for me. And that’s it!! JUST GO FOR IT!!!!

Fun is absolutely the key point. When I was learning on 125 dirt bikes all I wanted to do was to twist the wrist and go. No matter how old we get that's all we want in the end.

I started on a 1980 Yamaha XJ650 that barely ran. Loved that little pos. 8 years later I'm on a 2018 Harley Davidson Street Glide and I couldn't be happier. For me the XJ just happened into my lap. My dad rode but I was never that in to motorcycling. Now I don't know what life is without a bike.

I overthinked for 4 months before I got my first bike, I ultimately decided on the MT03. I don't do much highway riding so the MT03 has an insane amount of torque for what it is, a little 321cc bike. I get to zoom around town, still somehow manage to hit 80mph without realizing it.

Great video, totally agree on a lot. My 2c: the best first bike is the one you can get. See what's on craigslist, what has the best prices for the best conditions, and (imo critically) what you'd be comfortable dropping. My first two bikes were both ones with lots of crash bars etc, and that was a real confidence builder- I did drop them a lot, but I feel like it also made me a good rider /way/ faster than I would have being scared all the time.

My first bike, after a 20 year gap, was a Royal Enfield Continental GT650. Still got it, it's a brilliant bike and much better than the stat sheet would suggest. I also have a Kawasaki KSR110, a Husqvarna 701 SM, and I picked up a 1987 GPZ750 yesterday. All of them are brilliant bikes, and all great fun to ride.

I chose an FZ6R as my first due to a great price and it is stupid how fast it is. However as a seasoned adult and a safety nut, I have managed it well so far. Yammie. Here's a life-saver for YOU: It's called - "THE TWO SECOND RULE" In dry/good conditions try to keep at least a 2 second gap from the vehicle in front - key to this is watching for the back of the vehicle in front crossing/passing a fixed marker ie. the different asphalt 0:21 & timing how long it takes for you to cross/pass that same place. > 0:22 You're way too close to the back end of something that looks like a small wall >I, it seriously impedes your view/options & if that thing had slowed suddenly, I don't know what you weigh but you faceplant that much metal & I'll wager they wouldn't even feel it. Saying "Only a fool breaks the two second rule" aloud takes around 2 seconds - now you know - Ride safe.

I knew an old Harley guy who always used to say, "it doesn't matter what you ride, just ride." I had a Honda Rebel 250 as my first bike for a couple years, but I sold it a couple years ago for financial reasons. I promised myself I would get another bike when I finished paying off my car, and I had my heart set on a Honda Rebel 500. Now I have a better job and my car will be paid off in 2 more payments, so it's time to get back into riding; unfortunately, Honda Rebel 500s are hard to find right now, and the dealership sold the used one they had the day before I was able to go look at it. I was bummed because I didn't want to wait for another one to show up, and I didn't want to buy a brand new one because they're more expensive and I'm still a beginner rider. So, when the dealer showed me a 2016 Yamaha V Star 650 Custom with only 6k miles, I sat on it and debated if I should get it. I drove 15 minutes to another dealer to sit on a Rebel 500, and I wasn't as instantly in love as I thought I'd be. The V Star is more comfortable. It's heavier though, and I'm only 5'2" so that worried me, but the first time I was ever on a motorcycle was a 2002 V Star 650 my dad got when I was in 3rd grade, and they didn't change much between 2002 and 2016. I got to ride my dad's old V Star with my cousin a few years ago shortly after I got my Rebel 250, and I had a lot of fun on that old 650. So, I decided to go for the 2016 V Star 650. It's a great deal and it's available now, and if I don't love it after a couple years, then I can sell it and get a different bike. I wasted too much time agonizing over the Rebel 500 vs the V Star, mentally going over all the specs and the features the older bike is missing, but at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what I ride, I just need to get back on.

Been subscribed a while, don't know how much interaction I've had. When I was still in high school, I got really interested in sport bikes, because of a loosely organized local club (big tri-state catch all) and was very stupid on the forums wanting a Busa... luckily that's as far as that went... Many years later and a lot of life kicking me, I'm back looking at cruiser style bikes like I grew up wanting (Harleys and the CHiPs Kawasaki) Your videos and many from others are helpful in trying to get research, without going completely cross-eyed looking at details on a computer screen. I know that I want to land at the big touring bagger, so the classic style cruisers are up on the radar... maybe some retro on the list, more nimble to get the control down. Can't go too small, because I definitely need to be able to run on the highway. Thanks and glad you've been staying shiny side up.

Really decent starter bikes if you have some experience with motorcycles. They're relatively affordable and have a lot of history and character. They're like a cross between a Triumph and a Harley. Not the fastest things in the world but still really fun to ride with neutral handling and powerband..
