In this week’s episode, we discuss being a lazy photographer and a trap that should be avoided. It's easy to fall into a routine or a certain way of doing things, but if you're not careful, it can suffocate your creativity and progression in photography. I've been heavily into landscape photography for the past 9 years, but 7 of those years were spent entrenched in this trap. And, I firmly believe that if had known what was happening back then, I would have easily been able to correct this and progress much quicker. I hope you enjoy this week's video and as always thanks so much for watching! - Mark

Hey Mark, I guess I'm sitting about 33 years in. I fell in love with photography in the summer of '89 when I saw photos appear in the darkroom. I often still feel like a beginner and know that as much as I'm learning and growing, I still have a long ways to go. I have a broad range of experience, but that doesn't always equate expertise, so I'm still working on that.

It is nice when you elaborate on the possibilities of landscape photography like this so that everybody can see that it is not just photographing nature and vistas. I hope more people will come to this photography genre because we have many things to photograph and our planet has so much to offer. Very good video Mark! Oh, and I am in the 5-6 years range :)

Thank you for the videos Mark. I picked up photography a little over 2 years ago. Your videos have been super beneficial. I've wanted to buy a wide angle for those "grand landscapes", but just haven't pulled the trigger and always used the 18-55mm on my D3500 and now the 24-120mm on my Z6ii. Anytime I feel stagnant I go through social media and look at types of photos that I haven't done before or editing techniques. I think I've started to figure out my "style" and just trying to expand it into different genres. I love this video!

Excellent video Mark. I’ve been photographing landscapes for about 12 years. The problem I had at first was I was working 60+ hours a week. Now that I’ve retired, I’ve been trying to get out more. I’m transitioning from the ‘grand landscapes’ to more intimate landscapes. My biggest problem is seeing the small shots in the large!

Wonderful video - Thanks Mark. I only really started to seriously take landscapes in the last year. I've always played on cheap cameras and especially the phone camera taking family and grand landscapes, but retirement has allowed me to be a bit more focused on composition and technique. I have a lot to learn (understatement of the year), and your videos are really helpful.

Over fifty years ago I was a professional event photographer. I put the camera down for several decades, but once I retired, I began with mirrorless. I too enjoy landscape photography and I generally try to create photo essays which I post on my blog. One of my most favorite type of pictures include serendipity, i.e. a section of drainpipe with a graffiti smiley face surrounded by a flowering weed. Thanks for all your inspiration.

I'm in my 6th year as a passionate hobbyist photographer. Started off with all macro, then grand landscapes and now it has morphed into a combination of intimate scenes, abstracts and good old fashioned grand landscapes! There was one night at Out of Oregon when the sky and foreground was so amazing I never took my wide angle lens off and then another night when I challenged myself to only use my telephoto lens the whole night. Very much enjoyed learning from you and Eric Bennett in Oregon!

Totally agree Mark, have just started using my telephoto more (actually the lens I use for bird photography) to explore more compressed and localised compositions. I have bought and sold so many wide angle lenses over the years because I rarely felt I could get an image I was happy with as opposed to the standard 24-120mm and telephoto. You will enjoy the macro lens, it opens up many opportunities for exploration, the hardest thing is remembering to 'think tiny' not just 'think close up'. Enjoy. Hi Mark. I recovered my interest in photography 12 years ago while recovering from cancer, discovering a love of close ups of the abstract images in the bark of Australian indigenous trees. Really appreciated this video. I’m actually more into close ups of nature than I am of wide angle landscapes along with ICM and impressionist type photography. But I still get a lot out if your videos. I was intrigued by your divided landscape images. They reminded me of a concept called the “edge effect”. There’s a podcast on the topic on the Hidden Brain podcast which you might appreciate.

I have been doing photography for many decades, primarily in film. There was an unfortunate hiatus for about 10 years but have now jumped into the digital age in the last 1-2 years. I thought it would be like riding a bike and I would pick things up quickly, but that has not been the case. It has been more like starting from scratch. I agree that challenging oneself with new types of photography is great. Very inspirational. I have perhaps 9 to 10 lenses for my camera and purchased my very first Zoom lens last year. The zoom is a 70 to 200 and I have used it for maybe 4 to 5 test snaps. I was shocked over how heavy the lens is, even though this is supposed to be the lightest of the telephoto zooms (a big change compared to even fast primes). That said, this video has inspired me to take the lens out of the closet and put it in my bag. Thank you.

7+ years and I am doing something similar to what you’re talking about……stepping out of my comfort zone and into what I call my “experimentation” zone - playing with ICM and creating abstracts - which is something I’ve never done and also the “intimate” landscape……rather than the grand scene finding those special details. I’m finding I had “writers block” so to speak with my photography and I wasn’t even feeling much inspiration to go out and shoot. These new techniques are offering me the inspiration that I was missing. Thx again for a great video!

Another excellent video, Mark. I got my Nikon D5500 about 10 years ago and dabbled in landscape & nature photography, but not too seriously. But, since retiring and moving to Tucson I got involved with a local photography club and for the past 2.5 years have been much more serious and consistent with photography. I still do mostly landscape & nature photography, but have tried to incorporate using my 70-300mm lens rather than strictly using my 18-55. I’ve also tried ICM and other techniques to keep things interesting. Keep making great videos and inspiring us to expand out photographic journey.

But now that I’m getting older and have more time. I’m dedicating more time to my photography. It’s exciting and it’s also exactly why I watch your channel. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Your videos on creating a storyboard and finding a scene within a scene inspired me to spend more time with a telephoto lens. This fall I rented a nice 70-200 to take to the mountains and I had such a good time with it!

I’m in my second year and I will try every type and genre of photography I can. Doing so has made me look at things completely differently and it has expanded my creativity. Sometimes things work and sometimes they fail but unless you give them a go you will never know. The beauty of photography I believe is that it doesn’t cost anything to make mistakes, it’s what you learn from making them and putting them right that matters. When you get things right it is so rewarding. There is too much going on around us to religiously stick to one type of photography, give anything a try when the opportunity arises is my motto 😉

After many years of travel photography with an SLR, I became more serious about photography when I switched to digital twenty years ago and learned post-processing skills. Now I do “local photography” - gardens, woodlands, wetlands, wildlife and an occasional automobile meet-up. This takes me from macro to telephoto. Thanks for the good ideas on more ways to expand!

A great vid and that's why I come here. I'm getting to be an old guy and don't do the fancy tech stuff that I barely learned anyway. Just the basics these days. But the challenge of getting a good shot, be it landscape or some minimalist thing is still there. I think your post is so on the money.

Great video, Mark. And such an encouraging reminder. My photography journey began in 1999 with film shooting youth sports action (our kids). But a few years in and with more time later in my career my wife and I began to travel and explore the western US and my interest in landscape photography began. That has been going ~15 years now but only really kicked in when I fully retired 4 years ago. I'm just a hobbyist though a couple of local charities offer prints of my work to raise money. I guess my point is that I have been at this a long time - but not full time. So my development has been slower. That said, I, too get stuck on the grand landscape and/or on certain subjects. Mountains. Waterfalls. The Coast (as we call it here in Oregon). But after a while it is difficult to improve. Not only do I struggle to find new compositions that I haven't already done, I begin to look too critically at each scene noticing every little thing that keeps it from being "more perfect" and failing to appreciate the wonder of it all. That is a very long way to say, "Thanks"! I need to get out and slow down and spend more time looking at various scenes. Looking for details I had not noticed before. Sometimes things right at my feet. And learning techniques that I had not learned before just as I did with sports action photography, the grand scenics and then waterfalls. Each new "genre" requires not only different technique but also a different way of looking and seeing. And that takes time and lots of trial and error! Which if I allow myself can be really fun.

Thank you for the videos Mark, new subscriber and have been catching up with your older content. Photography has been a hobby for, good grief, 60 years. First pictures for high school in the late 50’s. Still have my first SLR, a Minolta SR1. It went with me to Korea in 1962, and off and on until the DSLR came along. Shoot local sport car tracks, landscapes, macro, birds. Master of none however. Mirrorless now, and BW film with a 70’s film SLR.

Photography has always been part of my life since my childhood. Up until 2020, my photography revolved mainly around sports and motorsporsports. Events have made me reflect on what my photography meant to me and have for the last two years dedicated myself strictly to nature and landscape photography. I love the freedom of creativity, the evolution, the techniques and feel there is so much to learn and be curious about that for the first time in my life, I feel like I am creating images and not just simply taking images. Thanks to your channel and many others, I feel excited about this new direction I am taking with my photography and totally enjoy these videos. I still have a ways to go, but that is the most exciting part of it all !! Thanks Mark and keep up the great work, it's inspiration to us all.

I think some of the out of the box thinking techniques you mentioned will prove immensely useful and is something I plan on trying more with autumn waning and winter on the way. Winter is so unpredictable in the midwest and can be lack luster so techniques like these will boost motivation and help capture something even when the overall scene may seem drab

I have only been serious about landscape photography for the last 3 to 4 months in terms of equipment and composition. I do it as a stress reliever and a way to break from the daily grind without any monetary incentives or reimbursement. Prior to this I was a Pro amateur iPhone user 10+ years, like most everyone else. I thoroughly enjoy your channel with your helpful advice and tips and most importantly helping me to improve my passion for landscape photography. Keep up the awesome work.

I’ve been on my journey for 6-7 years now since picking my camera back up. Agree with your description of getting ‘stuck’ and needing a push to try something new. A technique I have used is going out with only one lens...wide angle or telephoto...doesn’t matter which. Having only one lens that may be the wrong lens for the location or subject or conditions MAKES you get creative. You look at your environment very differently as you have to view everything through one lens, one eye, so to speak. Another way to get unstuck when it happens.

5 years in (started with a pocket camera). This year picked up a 17-40 f/4 and then a 16-35 f/2.8. Yes, I was obsessed with wide angle lens for most of the summer. Finally, I got some sense back in my head and now my go-to lens is the 24-105 f/4. I do like using the 16-35 f/2.8 at 35mm for macro shots. the f/4 isn't the same (not as good) as f/2.8 for background blurriness. I shoot mainly in forest areas, no mountains.

that's 100% what I have experienced and felt Mark - thanks for sharing!! I started out with a 24-70 but a friend of mine said go up to 70-200. I found my self using it 90% of the time even when shooting my outdoor furniture designs outdoor. I am in my 5th year as a semi-pro. I don't make income with it but I use my knowhows to promote my business and outdoor furniture designs and I easily have saved $50-$100K just because I can do landscape photography myself and my photos help open doors to my business, big time.

1-2 years into this journey as a hobby. Started with a repairable Canon T2i that just needed about 20 minutes of attention with a screwdriver and began snapping shots: pets, wildlife, landscapes, and some I guess would be considered abstract. I basically take pictures of what I like to see, entirely for myself. Your videos about lens choices, composition, editing and storytelling have been extremely helpful to me. I came away from a recent Yellowstone trip with a few lucky shots, a few successful landscape images and 1-2 that others have told me look like they belong in an art show.

Yes.... I've been doing landscape for 3 yrs and I realized I have already "graduated" the way you describe your own journey... I have been looking at and photographing more intimate landscapes or details, without really noticing how much of an integral part of my journey it has become. But it really is, and it's a natural progression, it seems...

I'm currently 8 months into my photography. I bought a Sony a7iii. The first lens I bought for my camera to use along side the kit lens, a 28-70mm, was the Tamron 70-300mm telephoto. I'm happy I did, I use it a lot. In these 8 Months I've taken over 4000 photos. I'm one who likes to shoot a lot and pick through them afterward for the ones I really want to edit and post to my various social medias and occasionally get a few printed. I absolutely love photography and see myself doing this for a long time. Thanks for the videos and the tips you've given.

Mark, love your channel. Started photography in the 80's Minolta film camera shooting my children sports, family events, vacations and landscape. My equipment was stolen when digital cameras started to hit the scene. Knew film was on the way out and digital was the new technology but not advanced enough to my liking so gave up photography until the Nikon D70 arrived. I love many subjects to shoot, from travel, landscape in USA national parks, grandchildren, sports and abstract. Hardly an expert photographer just trying to get better every time I shoot. Still make plenty of mistakes. That is what I love about photography it seems like your always learning be it a new camera or new software.....preservation of memories.
