You're Crashing Your Car Wrong In Project Zomboid

I always see people crashing and breaking their bones because they swerved away from a car in the road and I gotta say you're doing it wrong. Seriously, hitting another car does far less damage even at max speed. Play bumper cars its less dangerous.

Slow computer can do it too, since handling (and acceleration and breaking power) depends on the framerate. Also being too zoomed in or not looking ahead. Of course all this applies only if there aren't static objects on the road. Sometimes players might place some, or maps like 10years later have trees growing, and part of Louisville has a bit of road obstacles.

I mean this also makes sense from a real-life logic standpoint as the car's obviously on wheels and will dissipate some of the energy of the collision by moving

Cars are also made with relatively thin metal sheets and are therefore easier to damage than a tree, (not so much the fence though) and since they can be damaged easier it means that more of the energy will be spent deforming the metal of the other car rather than the metal of your car, or the flesh and bones of your body.

Ooh, neat. My longest living character died to a collision with one of those tiny trees that spawn a few months after the apocalypse has started. Honestly didn't look like it had a hitbox yet so I tried to dodge the car in the road and that was that. I've been told that seat condition % is a big factor in determining how much damage your character takes from a crash
Mashing the spacebar is always a good idea if you realize you're about to crash. Slowing down by any amount directly reduces damage taken.
I actually remember being instructed IRL to never swerve to avoid a crash since there's a greater likelihood of causing more havoc for others or striking a fixed object and causing more harm to myself 😢

Honestly the best way IRL to avoid crashing is.... drive slower. Boring I know. But it's a triple benefit: 1. You have more time to react. 2. It takes less time to stop. 3. If you can't stop in time, the damage will be less.

You are, you can eat rotten food in moderation, survive and get the full nutrients from them (calories included), you can do everything that consumes calories, eat a lot then sleep and that will maximize the calories you ate. You can also need less than half the calories you'll need if you fatten up then survive off hypocaloric foods while you work, so you're always at the minimum of calories and won't be able to burn any while you get slim, ending up needing only the calories you use to fatten up while moving very little, which is very little, like about 4k calories to start fattening plus idle caloric consumption for the time you are fattening and any extra you burn due to doing stuff.
Theres also a forth option... ...Hit the brakes and don't crash.
I will remember this while I am at high speed and have little reaction time 👍

Glad to know that every time I grab one of those Japanese sports cars from a car pack, panic on a route I've been on a hundred times, and handbrake slide on the snow like an underprepared drift missile into the side of a lamppost, I'm "doing it right". If only you could convince my friends too, Ret.
My favorite way to avoid crashing altogether is just pressing S and Space at the same time to brake. It's way faster than just braking with S, and not pressing A or D means you wont spin out.
dude made me realise that making mistakes can be done wrong 😂
@lemax6865

Much like in real life, even once you've made a mistake, the consequences can sometimes be mitigated (or aggravated) depending on your reaction. Be calm, be aware and react correctly, and you might turn a game over into an inconvenience.
The fact that they've enabled so much real life systems that the game really does mimic real life scenarios Obviously u don't want to crash, but swerving and crashing on your side if done well will also lead to minimal damage, hitting something with wheels also definitely help lessen damage in comparison to hitting a hard immovable object
Moral of the story:crumple the crumple pits
at first i expected this to be a parody of the "youre doing (activity) wrong in (video game)" videos that show up everywhere, but then it had actual helpful advice
I am firmly in the "Speed Demon is a negative trait" camp.
this makes perfect sense too. trees are rooted in the ground, cars are not, trees do provide more resistance when crashed into.
'You fool, your failing incorrectly!'
I was gunna make a sarcastic remark about not knowing there was a “correct” way to wreck the car but honestly this is useful
yet another video demonstrating the depth and complexity of PZ. Outstanding presentation.
Makes sense since Cars IRL have a thing can a crumble zone that make to prevent driver damage and both having it reduces it more

Nice tips! I wish I have learned these in driving school 😂 Just beware that IRL the car would flip in the hand brake scenario and your character could faint. Maybe the devs would make this in the future in "faint and car maneuver patch" lol:😂
Oh great. So not only am I driving wrong, i'm CRASHING it wrong! Can't I do anything right!?
That's certainly a video title.
Personally my strat is to just hold space and S+D as the hand brake, normal break, and wheel turning all at once has stopped cars going at about 90 in only about 20-30 tiles For context I have 3k hours in the game and never have vehicle problems anymore after figuring out how to do it effectively (takes practice, and how you wanna spin out is based on the vehicle)
Crashing your car is wrong by itself.
I like the part where I got an add for an accident lawyer for this video.
I normally drive the D6 and carry metal sheets in the boot, that way I can repair bonnet damage easily, plus the D6 takes a LOT less damage to the boot, I drove a D6 I found with a full condition boot from riverside to Louisville, rolling it over along the way, and only lost about 4% durability, then drove it around a lot in the city and didn't lose any durability to the boot. Bonnets are way easier to repair and replace
if only ryan dunn had this knowledge
I usually just set a speed limit for myself so that I have a better chance to react and steer the car more effectively. For example on narrow roads I’ll just stick to 75 mph and on highways that I’ve cleared I just absolutely fang it.
one time i touched the edge of a fence at walking speed and somehow broke the windshield :D
I just slam the spacebar and s as soon as a obstacle appears and any crash if they happen end up dealing small damage
How to Crash Correctly Step 1: don't???? Step 2: hit the car
Makes sense.
Oh, i figured that one out on my own, however i have about a 1000 hours in this game by now, so yeah, had plenty of time to crash and put 2 + 2 together.
when my car engien is dangerously low i just start driving in reverse so i hit the trunk, its way slower but at least if i hit somethin the car wont break completely
Damage control, let's go.
I try to keep my revs low cause the low ruuuuu sounds nicer than the loud BRRAAAAA
Once I found the option that pans the camera forward when driving I never crashed again.
Whether you do it wrong or right, crashing you car is never fun. The other day I frantically weaved around zombies on a highway (running some over) with in my black Chevalier Nyala, then crashed it into a street light on an intersection killing the engine. I thought I was part of the hoard after that, but somehow managed to get away. Slept the night in a nearby convenience store, so sad about my black Nyala that I marked it on my map with a cross and text saying "R.I.P. Car" The next morning I snuck outside and found a white Chevalier Cerise Wagon in near perfect condition with it's keys on the ground. Took that back to my black Nyala after the hoard had cleared, transferred my loot to my new Cerise Wagon and drove back to my safe house.
There's a long-unexplained sandbox setting: What does zombie durability and strength do? - Is "Tough" just x% more HP? - Is "Superhuman" zombie strength just worse wound severity? An increased chance of getting grabbed? Being harder to push down?

In my experience some cars can brake way better with the handbrake. I suggest testing each car you get, see what is better, the brakes, handbrakes, or both at once. Some cars stop instantly with the handbrake.
@MsHojat
9 ай бұрын
I'm pretty sure that's only due to the quality and condition of the brake parts in the vehicle combined with the weight of the vehicle. Motorcycles (a modded-in vehicle) are super-light, which results in the game giving them instant breaking power due to unrealistically-high wheel friction/grip or something.
I'm still waiting to hear about the one thing I do right in pz

0:10 bruh i got that same exact car, color and everything LMAO
great advise ima try it irl brb
are brakes or handbrakes better at stopping the car? does S+Space slow it twice as fast?
Don't drive fast in this game unless you really have to shake off a group of zombies. Hit space bar to brake if you see a crashed car. I usually try to get trough between the car and the tree if I am not fast enough to stop. Also Heavy Duty > Sports
but aren't there crashed car props in the roads that are completely static? wouldnt those cause significantly more damage then a car that can move abit?
@keegany4r176
10 ай бұрын
They actually aren't static. They can be pushed out of the way (fortunately).
Honestly, I'd rather damage the engine than the trunk. The trunk can't be replaced, so you get diminishing returns on fixing it. The engine can be repaired infinitely at no diminishing returns (other than parts availability) and the hood can be replaced (unless you're using that mod that makes each car have it's own unique parts, forgot the name. In which case you can still replace it, but it's considerably harder). However, it's worth reducing damage to yourself if it means no fracture vs fracture.
Sunday driver, don't have this problem. Rather take longer to get there than lose my vehicle and hurt myself. Plus an extra point.
Like real life
I am curious how one can ration food best in PZ. Would you last longer staying well fed until the food runs out, or just above starving? Seems like a long standing problem.
I knew all of that, guess being completely incompetent at driving does have its perks.
You can repair or replace your hood pretty easily with low skill but trunk is irreplaceable and requires high skill level
That thumbnail is almost sexy.
for me the break and turn method slows down the car a lot.
Now that you've shown how you minimize the damage possible show us how to *maximize* the damage possible. I wanna see how I can turn a meager pothole bump into a Mad Max rollover turning myself into a sad pile of meat when they find the body
grub
how can you see that wide while driving a vehicle?
so, this game confirms the real world theory that if you would drive at a slower speed, you'd have more reaction time to avoid crashing. who wouldav thonk!
Yes, but the idea of swerving is to not crash at all or have time to break. Still really useful to know the game has this realistic mechanics, but I will still swerve as it has proven useful. I also mostly reccomend a max of 45 to 60 km/h on unknown roads.
Spacebar is handbrake? Say less. Im about to be DK.
So..... do a sideswipe
i always did this becouse this is how i saved my life back in 2018, i was about to crash but i slammed the brakes and destroyed the shit out of the ohter side of the car, i broke my arm but i didn't wen't' fliying.
It's not the subject of the video but set a key to pan the camera forward manually, you'll see farther and should have more time to react, and no you don't have to open your window to do that
