Martin and the players want their cake and to eat it. You can’t keep pushing for higher and higher wages without the clubs having to expand their revenues to pay for it. The way they do this is by having to factor in more games to increase revenue. Players today can be earning over £100000 per week before they’re 20. They are told how amazing they are every day. They have agents ensuring that their every need is catered to. Simon is talking about mental fortitude in players which in the eyes of many is sorely lacking in the modern player. There needs to be a balance but Martin’s way will not help any human being in the long run.

What he said about physical fatigue and overload actually applies best of players like Pedri, who are being absolutely rinsed internationally and by Barca because the club are struggling to the extent they are, and the club's interests are the priority... or Liverpool's squad depletion last season meaning that players like Matip were rushed back from injuries probably before the optimal rest/recovery period (which was Klopp's admittance in January). Or Rashford seeming to be limping of the pitch at times and delaying surgery to be in the Euros squad.. Which makes it even more unbelievable that Keown supports the idea of a biannual world cup (probably because Wenger is the figurehead); the physical welfare of players cannot possibly benefit from even more international football, but he bypasses that issue conveniently.

Not literally of course because they would get too warm but he knows they are the most looked after athletes in sport and the most wealthy just to help them along. It boils down to Martin Keown basically telling Simon he spends more time moaning and being negative than praising and being positive. He isn’t wrong. There’s nothing wrong with being critical but to just constantly moan all the time it isn’t healthy.

Both are coming at this topic from different agendas. It's clear Martin wants to be a manager and work in a high-level football club. Maybe one in North London? Simon's more complex, and it's not clear what role he could want other than to furrow his own brand, but he's intoxicated by how widely he himself uses the dictionary. I would happily hear these two ruffle their feathers over a few more nuanced topics in football. That's content in itself.

Firstly, I hate that we debate each and everything England squad announcement (that isn't for a major tournament) like it really matters. We're not talking about Southgate leaving out the captain or something, it's a couple of young lads, it isn't the end of the world. Secondly, player welfare of course matters but it's a stupid topic of conversation because no fan is going to feel sorry for them whilst they all play 3 hours a week for such ludicrous amounts of money.
