When I picked this up I didn't even know it was the actor of Sam from icarly, which I loved as a kid. I picked it up because of the title. It promised that someone else had an abusive mom, not just me. When my mom died it gutted me but it also made me so relieved. Some days I am glad my mom died. When people get mad at the title, I only think, how nice you'll never have to know what we've been through.

The more I hear about Jennette's childhood the more I understand the weird vibes I got from her character when I would catch iCarly. I really feel for her and I'm glad she did and is doing the work to move forward.

Oh my stars. Thank you for this video. I knew this book would be too intense for me, so getting to experience it through your review has been cathartic. I don't think I could handle reading it, because of my own experiences with being a daughter of a similar type of mother. My mother isn't dead, but she is dead to me. I hope i can be healed enough to one day read this book, because wow.

Kudos to you for giving a clear and accurate definition of gaslighting, a term that's increasingly used incorrectly! I also appreciate that you cover the abuses Jeanette experienced and the eating disorder issues. I'm putting off reading this until I'm in a more stable place in my own eating disorder recovery. 🙂

I wish you the best on your recovery! And thank you, people often misunderstand what gaslighting is. I myself thought it meant something else when I started hearing it more often.

This book is everywhere! I’m glad people are reading it and talking about it. Her childhood was so traumatic. I’m glad she’s getting to tell her story and I hope she’s healing well as an adult!

This book was AMAZING. While my heart broke for her and it was truly disturbing at points, it was an extremely well written book in my opinion. I loved her voice and the way she really wrote from her perspective at the time -- in a weird way it reminds me of the trauma work you do in therapy. Anyway, I finished it in a day. The "controversial" title was also sort of genius from a marketing perspective -- I definitely picked it up partially based on the title (I didn't realize who she was before I started reading it). I agree with everything you said here -- it honestly takes a lot of emotional maturity to admit to your less pretty feelings, whether that be jealousy or complicated feelings on your mother's passing. Really great book, deserves its success
