You MUST See This Before Deciding to Buy an “Atomic” Watch

Ғылым және технология

Did you ever hear the rumor that the National Institute of Standards and Technology was no longer going to broadcast "atomic time" information on radio station WWV or WWVB? There was a rumor raging online in late 2018 which said that the broadcasts would cease at the beginning of 2019. There was just one major problem with that information. It was false. The Atomic Time broadcasts remain up-and-running here in late 2021 and it appears that they'll keep going for the foreseeable future. It just goes to show you that when the folks at NIST didn't make any announcement about shutting down the radio station then it probably wasn't going to happen.
Another big problem is that some folks who don't really understand how to use radio controlled "atomic" clocks and watches are trying to tell you that they don't work. Perhaps they could read the owners manuals before posting videos online about the devices. I have had great results using radio controlled clocks and watches from the likes of LaCrosse Technology, Oregon Scientific, Arcron-Zeit, Skyscan, Atomix, Junghans and, of course, Casio (with G-Shock and Wave Ceptor watches).
Normally, I wouldn't choose to share a video in which I seem to be in such an irritated mood. So I offer and apology for that. I also offer an apology for the ridiculous title of this video. I think it's silly to suggest that my videos are somehow essential to your decision-making process when it comes to buying things. In a way, this title is merely a spoof of other KZread titles I've been seeing around the site. But, really, let's be honest. Is there anyone on KZread whose opinion or other information is actually essential to your decision-making process? What kind of arrogance does it take for someone to declare that their videos are so important?

Talking about 'The time teller', right Yeah, he did another one last week again talking about budgets. I'm not an American, but even I could actually look up the budget information for your country could not find any info on the cuts to the Atomic time anywhere. He was also complaining about the cost difference which in regards to Casio watches you can always buy the cheaper watch. Then he went on a rant about BlueTooth and how you have to turn on the app then sync the watch to the app. Not actually realising that you don't even need the app running and the watch syncs to the time on the phone, you don't have to touch a thing. I put it down to just a plain rant. You know the meme 'Old man screams at cloud.'

I knew who Greg was talking about from the get go. For me, Atomic timekeeping is not a deal breaker, and while I don't need to the second accuracy like Atomic and nightly auto-setting provides, it's just such a neat feature, I love it. I actually don't mind watching the other guys videos...but somebody like Greg will always have that extra level of trust. I believe what Greg is saying, because of how Greg carries himself. Plus, when he has tons of videos and I've NEVER seen a single clock or watch not set correctly to the second(unless it is off for a reason, like his digital watch accuracy video)...that means something.

The first time I ever considered buying a casio Multi Band 6 watch was after seeing one of Greg's videos. I looked into it, and as I live in the UK and it would be worthwhile for me. You tell him, Greg. I lost faith in the accuracy of his reviews when he reviewed a Timex chronograph (This $47 Watch Changed My Opinion Of Timex! - which in fairness he liked) but said he was disappointed in the lume! You guessed it, he hadn't read the manual or just didn't know enough about a world-famous American brand to know that if you push the crown in , the whole face lights up, much better than any lume. It took his followers to tell him in the comments. Pretty embarrassing.

Ironically, regarding your intro, based on what I've seen of your in-depth overviews of watches so far, I think you're much more of an authority than most. So thanks for that and keep up the great work. And yes, I had heard the rumor, which to me didn't seem entirely implausible with them changing TV standards and whatnot, just very unlikely, since it is such a widely used and needed public service. Heck, as a last resort, I'd even set up a radio transmitter, if I had to. I'm sure that there are a lot more people a lot more capably than me that will insure that I'll never need to, presumably even in the US government, regardless of what anyone cares to think of it at _any given time..._

Plenty of people also don’t understand that the ferrite rod antenna in the atomic Casio watches is directional so they incorrectly say the watches don’t work. The manuals state that the 12 o clock side of the watch has to face the direction of the signal source while the watch face is horizontal (or the strap is tucked in to stand it up in the urethane band models) for strongest reception, especially near a window. So use your phone’s compass or another compass and line it up once to see the right direction when you set it down and it should sync reliably! Happy timekeeping!

@@GoodTimekeeper Yeah, I've used the Fort Collins Colorado radio transmission for many years if not decades to set old and new "atomic" alarms and clocks alike. Best time to get the signal is in the middle of the night so the waves can bounce off the ionosphere, putting something in a westward facing window or similar with a view of the sky above the horizon, assuming you're to the east, of course. Often these devices will pick up the signal on their own sooner or later anyway, though it might take a couple days. At least that's been my experience. And boy is it accurate. I've tested it to within 1 second accuracy, often several seconds more accurate than my cell phone even.

I know exactly which video is being referenced here as I remember watching and disliking it. I live in a location in Canada that is 2,600km away from the WWVB transmitter in Fort Collins, and yet my radio-controlled watches sync overnight about 80% of the time (higher in winter, lower in summer). The rate is closer to 100% if I go to the trouble of placing them next to a specific window. To accomplish this amazing feat, I looked at a map to get an idea of the compass bearing of Fort Collins relative to my location, and then I looked at the owner's manuals to see where the watches' antennas are located (12 o'clock on Casio, 9 o'clock on Citizen). Then I simply point any given watch's antenna in the approximate direction of Fort Collins before going to bed and it almost always syncs up overnight. This technology is completely archaic in 2024, but I love it nonetheless because it is so cool 😎

If you’re thinking about the watch in purely utilitarian terms , I can see the case that mainstream consumers of g-shocks may not get too much added value that warrants the extra £ . Lots of aspects of watch channels can be annoying , but I’m an advocate of folks having a go without being world leading experts .

I agree, but if you claim to be a "watch channel," and by the way are selling merchandise based on being a "watch channel," then the bare minimum you should know is the basics of watches and how they work. The problem is he's not really a "watch channel," he's a "merchandising channel," yet another of these "entrepreneurs" who wants to position himself as an "authority" on a subject based on the number of subscribers he has, his presence on social media, and his ability to market himself as an authority. He's not qualified, which is painfully obvious watching his content. It's not that he doesn't know what he's talking about, that's not the problem; the problem is that he presents himself as if he DOES know what he's talking about. That just perpetuates misinformation, and misinformation is NOT "harmless." BTW, and related, your channel has some of the best researched videos on the subject of watches that can be found on youtube.

@@FuglyStick You are too kind. I am definitely no expert, but I hopefully make up for it in enthusiasm. Love Greg’s stuff - very different to me though (and he has a lot more genuine expertise!). I do still tend towards giving people the benefit of the doubt and all power to people making a living from KZread as long as its not out and out dodgy behaviour. Atomic clock synchronization by radio is a marvelous technology. Even if you live in a hollow or shadow, or an old house with lead paint, as I do, the feature can readily be used with an android app such as that put out by Junghans. The Junghans app is a vast step up from what was previously cludged together by Casio in a rush in the aftermath of an Earthquake that shut down a radio tower in Japan. The Ft. Collins radio shutdown scare was the result of a misinterpretation of a federal government funding exercise. It was never intended to be made public. Federal Government financial appropriations are a weird and esoteric world, largely divorced from logic. Some people may prefer bluetooth synchronization to radio synchronization. To each his own. I prefer the older and simpler technology.

@@modernbushcrafter As I understand it, the Ft. Collins radio signal was never at risk of defunding. A budgetary exercise was leaked and misinterpreted in a sort of classic game of "telephone". It's a cautionary tale about how the internet multiplies and accelerates urban legends.

I can tell from your other videos and from this one that you are very passionate about watches. I agree with you that the video you are responding to seems very ill informed. For this video I would say try to focus on atomic sync watches and what are the pros and cons of the tech. Why do you think this technology may stay on for a while. Aside from regular home usage who else uses this? Is it used as backup for NTP or GPS time on critical services such as healthcare? I just want to provide some constructive criticism, keep up the good work!

They can't just shut the Atomic Time Signal down without letting us know WAY in advance. Casio couldn't be selling radio wave watches if they knew the American Multiband was closing down. I live in Spain and have heard the German and UK stations were getting shut down too. They are still up and running. Anyway, thanks to Greg I have the Junghams app installed on my phone which would set my Multiband 6 to atomic time anyway. The Casio Multiband watches are great and work well. When I am in Ireland my watch sets itself easily from the UK atenna. In the South of Spain where I live it's a bit more difficult to pick up the signal from the German atenna. However, I have found that it works most nights and that's fine by me. I think Multiband is well worth the extra money, especially paired with the Tough Solar system.

Here's a hack to improve your "atomic" (actually radio) reception: hang your watch around a metal pole, like a curtain rod, near a window. Leaving it there will dramatically increase the number of nights that you get a solid sync.

I had a friend many years ago who needed an accurate watch for timing a multi day event. He went to the dollar store and bought 10 cheap $1 quartz digital watches, set them all with WWV and checked them a week later. He then used the one that kept the most accurate time for the event. $10 for an accurate watch sounded like a great idea to me! I don't think they even make these cheap watches anymore, and if they do, they're probably $2.50 each now . Still, $25 isn't so bad. :-)

@@LV-42617 Is the video not titled "The Good Timekeeping Show?" I prefer GPSDO's and Atomic Clocks myself, but I am merely highlighting a technique one could use in a pinch if one needed a more accurate timepiece. That being said, I would like to note my friend didn't take temperature into account, so his entire procedure might have been flawed, but it IS a useful technique. Perhaps for others knowing a more correct time is more than a status symbol.

@@ernestsmith3581I have over 50 quartz watches, the "worst" gains about 30 seconds/month, the best gains about 2 seconds within a half year. I don't care at all for atomic/GPS/ Bluetooth timekeeping at all, knowing that a month is roughly 2.6 million seconds, the 30 seconds off are next to nothing. I do have GPS watches and a few radio controlled Casio s though, but I simply don't care for their "accuracy".
