Did I use this video as an excuse to re watch The Drunken Master? Yes absolutely I did, the movie is fantastic. If you've never seen it you gotta go do that. Jackie Chan is the GOAT

    While watching this, I was actually imagining a party going the entire campaign with a drunken master, getting drunk off the booze this guy makes and carries with him all the time, and loving their drunken idiot. Only to find out its non alcoholic and he's been duping them all the whole time thanks to his old friend Pavlov.

    There is one thing that would make Drunken Master a lot more flavorful (and somewhat more powerful, though not overwhelmingly so): proficiency with improvised weapons which count as monk weapons for you.

  • @aaronhumphrey2009

    @aaronhumphrey2009

    BG3 : 'Tavern Brawler' feat solves that little problem. ANYTHING is a weapon in your hands..or feet.. Nothing like smashing a beer mug over some clods head - for 20 DMG !😂

  • 9 ай бұрын

    @@aaronhumphrey2009 That feat exists in base 5e too. The problem is that the monk's dedicated weapon feat takes time to set up (it only works once per rest) and a monk can only have one dedicated weapon at a time. So a drunken master with this feat wouldn't be able to use the bar furniture with their dexterity and would only deal the improvised weapon's damage dice instead of their martial arts dice.

  • @simonrief1013

    @simonrief1013

    Really sad that you can't use the furniture. As a compromise I would suggest a pumpkin bottle as his monk weapon. It has the classical drunken master flavour and has some utility. Spilling the spirit to make the floor slippery, drink it for style or spit it in the face of an enemy for distraction. I know it is not really what you wanted but I think this weapon could support the style of random combat of this subclass

    In my last campaign I played as Bruz, the Goblin Drunken Master + Cleric multiclass. Raised by a dwarf that worshiped Hanseath, their character goal was to work as a deckhand for pirates to eventually save up enough gold to open up their own brewery: Bruz' Booze.

    My first character was a DM Monk, his name was Roshi and oh boy I tell you what the weird shit he got himself into still have impacted the table. To just let you in the little bit of maddness and just absolute absurdity that he willingly threw himself into is as follows •Suplexing an Adult Black Dragon •Ugly Bumping with two goddesses and then after being forced to become the champion of one he used the fates card he drew a session before and noped himself out of it. Eventually settling down with a mortal woman. •Sleeping with a Margrave’s Daughter •Fought a Noble Djinn by himself in Mortal Kombat •Jumped off a 300ft Beanstalk and survived the fall •Opened a Tavern and started his own Ale •Gained the title of Thunderfist after brawling all of the taverns and underground fighting rings in the city and with the help of the Wizard and Rogue they made his fists have the clap of Thunder. Over all, I’m really still trying to make a character that has not only done as much but has left such a significant impact on myself/the table I’m at. I was 15 at the time and now I’m in my mid 20s and although I don’t align with who Roshi is as a person his impact that he left on future events has a special place in my heart. That being said, if you are going to play a Drunkenmaster I would highly recommend multiclassing out of it at level 6 or 9 into something else, I would recommend the Manoeuvre feat for the BM and you could possibly go Cleric as well. I unfortunately had things like Blood Hunter and Paladin Multiclassed at 2 points and both are a strange and constantly getting changed around lore/mechanically and it just doesn’t work. He now is a PC I’ll never play again as he keeps needing to get reworked but I really hope you enjoy this very flavourful and fun subclass.

    I agree big time that Drunken Master is kind of a miss. Two of its abilities are way too dependent on fighting multiple enemies in close quarters, which is a situation you don’t want to get into in the first place as a Monk because of your d8 hit points and middling AC. Here’s some improvements I’d make. Tipsy Sway (on top of what it already gives you): When a creature makes a melee attack against you, you can spend 1 ki point as a reaction to impose disadvantage on the creature’s attack rolls against you until the start of your next turn. Intoxicated Frenzy: You’ve learned to hit your enemies almost as hard as you hit the bottle and turn imminent failures into successes. When you roll a 1 with your Martial Arts die, you can spend 2 ki points to turn it into a 10.

    Character concept I have in my back-pocket: Satyr with the charlatan background. Drunken master monk + college of lore bard. His fighting style is a raucous dance, head-butting and whalloping foes with his quarterstaff while firing off cutting insults at opponents as he prances away. Take the crusher feat. Plays the panflute (naturally), but also the udu (that be also brews in).

    Really recommend a dip into Barbarian for a Drunken Master. One of the weaknesses of the subclass is that there is a lot of emphasis on being near a bunch of enemies, and Monk just doesn't have the HP to do that consistently. A dip into Barbarian tho, and you're too drunk to feel the blows, so you'll keep fighting even after you've blacked out.

    when reading up the drunken master it truly feels like there was supposed to be more skills added to this subclass. they should of really incorporated one or two more optional drunk joke abilities that the player can choose from ex. "drunken rage", a monk rage like barbarians, not as strong though. "Holy Spirits" you feel closer with your inner spirit, Ki max increase , "liquid courage" nothing truly scares you, or is that the booze talking? you gain advantage against fears. "booze snooze" who needs a bed to sleep to get a good nights rest, besides the floor hasnt hurt you yet. but i guess whoever designed DM was just too drunk to finish it.
