You, Me and GatewayC: An interview with Lauren Mahon and Deborah James

GatewayC works with people affected by cancer to understand how to better support them through diagnosis. The team recently met with Lauren Mahon, Founder of GIRLvsCANCER, along with author and broadcaster Deborah James, to learn more about their own diagnosis experiences.
GatewayC is an online cancer education platform for primary care. It is designed to support GPs with earlier cancer detection to improve outcomes and experiences for patients. The platform is endorsed by Cancer Research UK, Macmillan and accredited by the Royal College of General Practitioners.

After a suspected 'infection' was initially treated with antibiotics, ( guess what, the swelling didn't go down ) a second assessment by ( another ) who told me 'it's probably Age related, but you can go for a test, if you want to', I DID = Throat Cancer!! Had I listened to His diagnosis I would have not had the necessary treatment that saved my life⚠️ Many GPS are just plain lazy and would rather be PAID than concern themselves as to whether you live or die, it's deplorable the attitude that seems to be festering in the Medical world! Good on Debra for standing her ground,😊

Given how badly Deborah was failed by her original doctors it is absolutely incredible that she did not sink into bitterness and blame. I would be interested to hear a statement from those GPs with an acknowledgement of their errors and allowing this wonderful person (and presumably more) to develop to stage 4 cancer before diagnosis. (And even then she only got diagnosed because she went private!) But I expect they are keeping their heads down.

My husband is a surgeon. Trust me,, it’s NOT the doctors…(yes, of course there are bad apples in every profession) but THE MEDICAL SYSTEM IS A COMPLETE AND ABJECT FAILURE! Most lay people just don’t have a clue how Government has totally screwed up healthcare and in its macabre are patients (aka victims) like Deborah!

@@helenal.7881 As I understand it, Deborah had nothing but praise and thanks for her hospital doctors. The problem was a series of GPs failing to flag up the possibility of cancer in time to save her. It would be interesting to send a (pretend) patient to every GP with a list of classic bowel cancer symptoms and see how many correctly refer and how many say oh it's probably IBS, go away for another few months!

Wonderful ladies to educate others about their Cancers. An open platform like this is a great way to educate! Its shocking Deborahs story. I feel baffled that regular fresh blood in poo is not an alarm bell to all GPs. A GP can at least rule out hemorroids by having a peek at someones bottom. It takes less than a minute. Than you rule out a minor issue and youre left with something that then warrants an internal bowel examination. This is a shocking story. Straight out stage 4 under 40. RIP Dame Deborah The BowelBabe💖 She has given the greatest education in Bowel Cancer 🤗🙏 BowelBabe. Dame & now an Angel. Shes left a lasting legacy 🙏 What a personality she had 💖 God bless her family & her 2 gorgeous kids🙏

Hearing Deborah James story when you go to the doctor and you tell them your situation that you're seeing blood in your stool the first thing that he should have said let's book a colonoscopy not say you're too young you're too fit it's not in your family no let's book it let's see and this way if she did she would have caught it on time and she would have been alive today my heart breaks every time I hear this story because it could have been prevented if the doctor was smart

Deborah's story is shocking and is not surprised she has lost faith in her GP. It is an immediate red flag that she had blood in her stool and ruling out hemorrhoids is routine and can be done very quickly. All of her symptoms are red flags, tiredness, loss of weight, change in stool habits up to 7 times a day, and cramping. She has been badly let down and valuable time has been lost. We have to look at the symptoms that are presenting in the here in now and not presume because someone on paper is not textbook to develop bowel cancer that all is well, especially with the extreme symptoms she was presenting with. Any sudden weight loss is a red flag to warren further investigation asap and certainly blood in stools having routinely ruled out something less serious as already mentioned.

Rest in peace Deborah James you're such a beautiful woman I do blame your doctor for this because when you did go to see your doctor and you told them that you were bleeding the first thing he should have done is a colonoscopy and he didn't and there's actually a blood test that you can do and it's a test that they see if you're losing blood because sometimes you don't know if you are losing blood and if you do this test they can detect if you are losing blood somewhere in your body which he should have done that but he never did so my opinion on this I blame the doctor for this and I don't know how he sleeps in the night because if you had a smart doctor you would have been alive today I think these GP doctors in the UK have to go back to school and learn more

When you go to the doctor and you tell them that you see blood in your pool the first thing they should do is a colonoscopy does it matter what age you are if the doctor was smart and was a real doctor they would have scheduled the colonoscopy and she would have been here today❤

I have health problems...not the big C fortunately but there are correlations here which I would like to float that may help. I notice that many patients don't breathe through their sinuses and also their highest chest cavity seems to be idle. What I'm suggesting is that this may be part of the problem. The sinuses become blocked and it is more comfortable to breathe through the mouth and according to my experiences this is detrimental to our health. It seems that the air that passes through our sinuses feeds the upper bronchial area and may also massage the aortic arch in a hugely benificial way. It's early days yet but it would be interesting if others here can confirm this thinking. If it is useful, see it as a gift from Almighty God...who helped me.

@@linzieloo1 My understanding in these matters has depeend showing me that I'm on the right track. It's all in the Holy Bible. Our muscular strength is in competition with gravity continually and that is where we must begin. The living cell replicates better when we are breathing better and when we allow time for gaseous exchange to take place...but Jesus Christ explains it best.

Your ladies are so beautiful Deborah James you are gorgeous I just wanted to say one thing I live in Canada and there's no age for cancer cancer comes in young old children there's no age but when you go to your doctor and you tell that doctor that you feel alone or you see blood in your pool the first reaction that a doctor should do is say okay you seem blood in your pool we're going to do a colonoscopy right away you felt the lump and your breast okay we're going to do a mammogram that's the right thing to do because that's when you want to catch it on an early stage but when the doctor has a laugh and says oh you're too young or it's probably hemorrhoids no no there isn't too young cancer comes in all ages I think the doctors in the UK needs to wake up a little bit and get more educated when someone comes into the doctor's office and says I see blood in my pool right away colonoscopy you're beautiful amazing women fiorella from Toronto Canada 🇨🇦❤️
