You'll want to quit graphic design school after this

This will be an unpopular opinion, but that doesn't make it less important. Young graduates will soon be on their way to the school of their choice, or they may be returning for another semester, but I'm recommending a second look?
Why would I tell you to quit design school? Because I believe you have a tremendous opportunity to make different decisions that will have a much stronger impact on your creative career.
This is a 10-minute video on a topic that should probably take much longer than that, but perhaps this is the catalyst for some to look for a different path.

Excellent video Dave! One thing though, would love affiliate links to those books you mentioned (though I am not sure how obtaining those work). If possible, please add them, then you'll be helping us more so we can help support you. ^_^

I’ve been a working graphic designer and illustrator since 2004. I went to community college and also have a fine art degree from Berkeley. I will add here: Your community college design and art classes are just as good if not better than the ones at a prestigious university. They are usually taught by the same teachers too. The community college art/design classes are able to specialize more into job ready specific skills. You will save so much money if you go the community college route and get an AA. In the design/art world, it’s your portfolio that will get you work. Only one of my bosses noticed that I went to Berkeley because she went herself.

Uncle Dave, this your step brother Uncle Gray….. you are a 100% right… I’ve said for many years as a designer “I could teach any monkey to do graphic design. Going to college isn’t needed.” 27 years as a designer, and I was aged out 10 years ago….. “preach it brother Dave… err Uncle Dave!”

I went to a local college for a web design certification. By the time I got my certification, a year and a half later, most everything I learned was either obsolete or not practical for meeting the needs of today's customers. I can find tutorials on KZread and Udemy for everything I need or want to learn. School is useful though if you want to get a job with a company, as most companies require a college degree of some sort.

Hey Dave, I wanted to thank you for your book recommendations. I was able to get Making and Breaking the Grid and a Kidd's Guide to Graphic Design and I have found them to be extremely helpful. I've only had Making and Breaking the Grid for a few months now but I often go to it to get design layout ideas for my projects. Thanks again! For others out there I found the book Real Artists Don't Starve by Jeff Goins to be an inspiring book which is helping me on my journey. Already had Austin Kleon's book Show Your Work! His book Steal Like an Artist is also fabulous.

I tend to agree with most of what you said, however, where I live in Canada having a university degree gives you access to high-paying jobs in government. So I see the degree that I have as a backup plan in case my artistic career doesn't work. I've been lucky enough to have an artistic career for the last 10 years, but in life, we never know, especially in the art field.

Your 100% right Dave. I’m completely a self taught graphic designer. Been doing it professionally for over thirty years. And yes I’m always learning something and hopefully getting better especially in InDesign. Thanks for saying like it is !

A billion years ago I went to collage and saw the setup in the school and quickly left and entered a trade design school. The equipment was junk and out of date. I was already working in print and marketing and saw the current equipment. Please understand no KZread and just aol was internet back then. Much later working and managing I found that hiring from grads was just not gonna work out. Speed was super slow and not very trainable. Not all but 95% the best designers came in late and could run circles around me and had no college training just working in the field. The grads got more money but got fired for not knowing how to finish. I would try to teach them how to get faster but the universities never taught them that what takes you a entire semester in college we do here in 5 minutes. That’s just my experience.

I know plenty of designers who went the traditional route, and I would agree-they all tend to work a lot slower.

Self-taught designer here. Only pro-level training I've had was during my high school commercial art classes. BTW, I had to take calculus in order to get a university degree in economics. And, guess what, there are design projects where I find calculus to be useful.

I think parents are loving you because they too know the truth but their 'know it all' kid won't listen or even research the subject because THE counsel at their school knows best, lol. schools are a business, end of story, that's it. remember this and it will save many from a miserable life in a deep hole of debt looking for ways for others to take on their burden because they didn't listen. ;) I knew this gentleman who gave me the best advice when I started university and he told me if you go make sure it's something that will get you a job... Engineering, Doctor and Business. everything else will put you either unemployed or in a minimum wage job with a stupid amount of debt. Funny thing bankers will tell you, you can't start your life after school by being in debt and yet banks are eager to give out student loans, lol.

Can you learn on your own of, course. Want to save yourself years of mistakes and ‘learning on the job’ (at the cost of clients). School Where do I get boots on the ground? Where do I get hands on? School. Practice on your clients? Very professional 😒 Learn as fast as you can. Thats called getting an education. 25 years professional. Teaching passionately part time. Kauai Community College all M1 Macs. All latest Canon cameras.

Ok, well first, your experience doesn’t necessarily reflect all experiences. Some m1 Mac’s are already out of date. Also, practicing on clients is what all freelancers do, every last one of them. Even if you work in an agency, or in a corporate gig, you’re practicing on clients, because you haven’t learned how to be good quickly. That’s the rite of passage as a designer.
