When I was in my teens, my grandmother was murdered in a home invasion. This set of stories hit me different than the usual dark & mysterious. They never caught who was responsible - I seriously hope it wasn't someone hiding in her house for months beforehand. (although either way is horrific)

JT I'm so sorry you and your family are having to deal with the trauma and pain caused by a horrific situation such as that. And I'm very sorry for your poor grandma as well... I've been a victim of more then a couple of crimes myself.... I really don't want to get into detail here bc it is very difficult and unsettling to relive the trauma. I've lost plenty of people I love people too drug overdoses, alcoholism, suicide, car accidents, illnesses and diseases, old age... Even had an ex boyfriend that fell off a cliff and died. But intentional death at the hands of another -especially that person never being caught- is a whole other ball game in itself. I truly hope that they catch whoever did it so that your family can get whatever "closure" it possible can but more importantly so that your grandmother can receive the justice she so rightly deserves! Hugs to you friend 💜

I can’t comprehend how someone can become so “obsessed” that he would think that it makes sense to invade someone’s home “to be close to her.” A person who would do that has to be demented in some profound other ways. You’d think that it would show up in everything they do.

Usually I hate it when people blame movies, games and stuff for ad things.. But that story reminds me when a friend of mine made me watch "Twilight" with him because his teenage daughter wanted to watch it and he wanted to check out what's all the fuss about it. He started concerned about blood and horrorstuff, first thought with vampires. But the terrifying thing was Edwards behavior and Bella's reaction to it. My friend had an intense talk with his daughter to make sure that she understands something: If someone and especially someone you barely know follows you around "to protect you" and even intrudes your home "to watch you sleep" the next step is NOT a romantic date but filing a restraining order :) I don't now about other teenage books and movies.. but if more of them tend to write "romantic" and describe obsession and behavior that disrespect certain boundaries... that might play a part in real occasions like that one.

Not demented but many who is convicted for stalking have Aspergers. This is not evil people but they have a neurological disorder. That makes them low on social skills and they dont understand boundaries well. I actually had a woman in her 50ths taking out my dog when I was at work. One morning I got home from a night shift, I noticed she had forgotten to take him out. So I texted her about it and took him out myself. I went to bed and fell asleep. All of a sudden I wake up from a sound and she is standing over my bed watching me sleep. I got angry and asked her what she was doing in my bedroom. Taking the dog out! But I texted you I already did that. And why are you in my bedroom? She had no answer. I showed her out and thought to myself this is the last time she got to take care of my dog. She is mental. A couple of days later I canceled the dog-walks and asked for my key back. But when I got to her apartment she wouldn't give it to me. She said she didt know where she put it and she tried all sorts of things to make me stay and have drinks with her instead. I insisted and finally I could leave. She didnt take the "breakup" well. She started calling, texting and stalking me outside my home. She screamed all sorts of things to me. This went on for a year! I tried to avoid her and hoped it would pass. But it didnt. She said she wanted an explanation, then she would leave me alone. So one day when she ran after me, I stopped and I explained that she was bad at boundaries and that I didt like being around her. And that the stalking has to stop or I will call the police. That actually hit home. She had just gotten an Aspergers diagnos and the doctor had told her about lacking boundaries. She thought she was behaving normal up to this point. After that day, I never saw her again.

I love how Mr. Ballen delivers in every single story. Not only do you deliver as to painting a picture of how events unfold with your description, but I actually put myself in the position of the character of your stories. I, all of a sudden am in their shoes and feel the anxiety and horror. So thank you sir, It certainly isn't easy to capture someone's attention the way you do. Especially when mostly is done just by your voice. I would also like to point out that, I love how these stories trigger a sort of chain reaction from the readers/ listeners into telling their own experiences. I wish I had a story to share, although I may have a few, from my parents and other family members; I don't think they may be as scary as the ones here.

My house was robbed twice when I was in middle school. I never was really unsettled by someone invading my home afterwards tbh since I always thought they just would be too afraid to rob someone while they’re home. But what was awful was the fact that they stole EVERYTHING in my house. I mean furniture, paintings, washer, dryer. Honestly it was impressive since we were only gone for about 12 hours.

I think they panicked when they saw a car at the gate and decided to burn their traces, I don't know. My mom doesn't like to talk about it, which is fair.

You definitely sleep with one eye open after knowing someone has intruded into your safe space. In my mid 20's I had moved back into my parents' house in a well populated typical suburban neighborhood in Chandler, AZ while I re-enrolled in school to finish my degree. One night I am out with friends pretty late but eventually make my way home around 3-4 am. Before I continue, to better understand you need to know the layout of the house :) haha always wanted to say that. The points of entry are the front door, a three car garage with opener, and if you go through a gate there is also a side door into the garage. From the front door if you walk straight back that is where all of the bedrooms are. If you were to go right that is where the kitchen/family room is as well as the laundry room. The laundry room is where you enter the house if you come through the garage first. I entered through the front door and straight back are all of the bedrooms including my parents' room. My golden retriever came out of their room to greet me and then I immediately without turning on any lights just retreated to my room for the night being as quiet as possible not to wake them up. The next morning my mom comes into my room and asks me, "so what did you need money for last night?" I asked her what she meant as I didn't take any money and if I had I would surely tell them, my parents are laid back people. She looks at me kinda puzzled and then asks, "so you didn't leave my purse and your dad's wallet laying on the washer?" Again I tell her no I did not and in my head I'm still not really thinking anything of these questions. But as she turns to leave she goes, "did you leave a rolled up towel wedged in the door that leads from the garage to the laundry room?" Now I'm like why in the world would I do that? And that's when it hit us that someone had been in the house. My parents' were obviously home and asleep when it happened but for me personally I have no idea if it happened before or after I got home. Chandler PD was able to pull some fingerprints off of the laundry room door but we never heard anything of note after that. The person had to have come in through the gate and then the side door into the garage (which was pretty crowded with cars and storage) and into the laundry room. For a long time after that falling asleep was not so easy. As a side note our German Shepherd had recently passed so our only dog at the time was our Golden who probably welcomed the intruder with kisses and tail wagging lol. That would never have gone down with our GSD around we would have known if someone was even thinking about stepping onto our property on her watch. Needless to say a new German Shepherd puppy was purchased not too long after this.

Almost every time I go to shampoo my hair, and close my eyes, I am thinking "Gee, I hope I don't open my eyes to find a person standing in my bathroom." So, thanks for confirming that really does happen.

I got a scarier one 😬 In 2009, 4 teens from the small quiet town of Mont Vernon, NH broke into the home of a family while the father was away on a work trip. 2 of the 4 teens believed they were going to commit a burglary, the other 2 had other plans in mind. 2 of the teens entered the home armed with machetes and entered the room of Kimberly Cates, the mother of the family. As they stood over her while she slept, they then began hacking away at her until she was dead. They then entered the room of 11 year old Jaimie where they hacked away at her also before cutting her throat. Believing they murdered all the occupants of the home, they left in a getaway car. Only Jaimie wasn't dead. She survived having her throat cut. She crawled on the floor to the nearest phone and called 911. Jaimie survived the attack and lived to testify at the murder trial of the 2 teens that broke into the family's home and attempted to kill receive inside.

When I was younger, we lived in a small town in Tasmania (Nubeena) My Dad's mate had two teenagers break into his home. The police came as fast as they could, My Dad's Mate is a Vietnam Vet, although he was o.k around people he really valued his privacy and his home was definitely invite only. The police found the teenagers crying and shaking. He was former SASR and followed them through his house til he could grab them, tie them and put them on his lounge. After that he began to subject them to stories of his deployments. Sometimes it's not the burglars that are the scariest thing.

Is it just me or are home invasion stories the scariest stories? There is just something about being in your home where you're supposed to be safe, and someone violating that safety that's creepy as hell to me. My place is small though so every possible entry point is pretty much covered by just being in the living room, but large houses in particular have always creeped me out, just the thought that someone could be somewhere in that big house, and you'd have no idea makes my skin crawl. And no you shouldn't live in fear of home invasions, but you should 100% be prepared for it. My gun is right beside me on the night table when I sleep, I do live alone though, so nobody could get hurt accidentally.

If they do you would have heard them in the meantime giving you advanced warning to get your weapon or even lock bedroom door that also has the same locks while also giving you the time to call the police. So basically either they spend 20+ minutes finally succeeding in getting through but than they have to contend with another one to possibly/potentially get through to get to you. I am not saying for you not to have/own/use your gun. You absolutely are allowed to but using your gun in conjunction with other protection methods is better than just using a gun.

There is an empty space in most rowhouses roofs. There may be some fiberglass as insulation and touching or breathing it in will irritate and sting and itch, but anyone can easily go there. There's not much to do there, there is no way into the house, but it is warmer in there and it blocks the wind. We sometimes run wires in that space so that they're out of sight, and it's no fun crawling in there, but it exists. The hatches are not even locked.
