Did they even have cameras that worked like that, then? I’m not sure. In the 1980s, they had to hide a camera the size of a Kleenex box amongst potted plants, or hide them behind other objects. I remember seeing a true crime show, where they showed the process. If someone went nosing around, they could easily find the camera. In the late 80s, my mom and grandma were all excited about the fact that you could set a VCR to record at a certain time of day. I wonder when people could first buy cameras that could record automatically, on a timer or motion detector. When I was a kid, I told my mom I wanted a TV I could bring places with me, and not miss my favorite shows. I was in a lot of activities, and liked to explore the woods with friends. My mom said she didn’t think that could ever happen. Now, we all have a TV we can put in our pocket and stream shows. 😂

That's certainly a possibility, though you'd think at least a couple of them would get discovered (or painted over and made useless), what with all the renovations the family did. Then again, if everything added up, the culprit would have been caught by now, and it wouldn't be an open-ended mystery.

It was mentioned by Mr Ballen and I think also in the Netflix series a key detail that many people probably didn't catch. And that was the fact that the watcher said the house had been in their family for years and the grandfather and father watched the house over the years. Well, because I worked in title insurance before, they should've done a title search on the property going back several decades and that possibly could've helped to find out who was the watcher. That title search would've revealed who owned the property over the years and possibly since it was built.

He'd have figured out who The Watcher was in 5 minutes! I also agree with a ton of people who said to search the walls, and if you didn't want to burn the house down then through a few smoke bombs or something in there.

I know its a bit late, but the owner of the home had a huge buyer regret and was probably the one responsible for sending the letters in order to get his money back in court. A couple of things indicate that: 1. In court, the owner claimed he wanted to keep the house AND get his money back at the same time; 2.He angrily refused to plant a secret cam next to the mailbox (which police advised). After this case, the police stopped taking him seriously 3. Apparently nobody ever received those letters except for him (Including the current owner of the house) 4. Some investigators involved in this case said they were personally 100% convinced the owner was sending those letters. 5. He made a huge noise about his "stalker" and also struck a movie deal. Given the above and the fact that no other explanation seems likely, I believe this was the case.

Idk man I’ve researched this topic heavily, and haven’t found one story saying that they declined to put a camera facing the mailbox. Can u tell me where this story is printed? it makes no logical sense to be a hoax with all the time and money the family put in to the investigation along with money lost on the house. If this was a nefarious plot, it was ill-conceived in a spectacular way, to no clear practical end, with the only result being the self-sabotage of years of the Broadduses’ lives. Vince Gagliardi, who investigated the case for the prosecutor’s office said “Maria was distraught every time I saw her. She was shaking,”. “I can tell you this: If Maria Broaddus was faking, she should play herself in the movie.”

I just watched The Watcher on Netflix so naturally I had to see if Mr Ballen had covered this dark and mysterious event in story format yet. I was not disappointed. But now I cant stop thinking about WHY has the stalker not been caught yet? Couldn't they just put a game cam inside of the mailbox to record who is putting mail in their mailbox? There was no return address or stamp on the enveloped so it couldn't have gone through the postal service. Someone is physically delivering those letters. With all of the cameras that were put on the house I'm just surprised that no one thought to monitor the mail box. Unless I'm mistaken!

With ongoing renovations, an electrical mishap would not be difficult to imagine, and if done correctly, would be undetectable. Insurance would ease the financial burden. The Watcher, even were he/she to know it was arson, would be hard-pressed to prove anything without outing their own identity. Even if you bulldozed the place outright, the land is still yours. Rebuilding might have made more sense over the $400k loss. And lastly, after installing all the cameras and while doing renovations, if you had it in you, you could always have a safe room built, beef up the security and arm yourself to a high degree. Hang a sign on the front door that says, “Take your best shot bitch!”, and hunker down. I know, I know, kids and all, but it’s possible. Chances are pretty good it was the equivalent of a troll, with little or no power to actually act on their threats. I have a couple additional questions : did he have the house scanned for listening devices, etc. and who ended up purchasing at the cut rate, and anyone after them - including anyone else that may have eventually profited from the fiasco.

None of the participants were totally honest but what always struck me was none of the neighbors were concerned with this watcher. I mean - all my neighbors have cameras everywhere - there’s no privacy outside my house. That’s disconcerting even though it’s not to specifically watch me it’s still disconcerting. How did the neighbors think this watcher solely focused on one house? I’d still get more giant dogs lol maybe a tiny dog to alert the giant dogs lol that would inform ya real quick if there was “someone” there or if it was cameras and even them cameras need power and maintenance eventually.

"The Watcher" is probably either a former owner of the house, or the original owner or their descendent. Someone who would've had access at some point to plant hidden cameras within the walls, and has the ability to actively watch them whenever they want. Police should look for all the former owners of the house and see what comes up, if anything.

This woman named Kathy Rowe was outbid on her dream home in San Diego in 2011 and tormented this young couple who bought the house. She was relentless. She relisted their house online which sent prospective buyers to their door, $1,000 worth of bills for adult diapers and magazine subscriptions they never ordered and ran an ad for a party sending people to their house. They still live in the town and are trying to move on. Unfortunately, quite a few locals reportedly think they have made a mint out of the Netflix rights, but apparently it didn't even cover their losses on the house. The series will likely stir up dissent again (sightseers have been said to have increased, amongst other things) but it should eventually die down. Remember, the wife/mother grew up there. She'll still have friends and supporters 🙂

This person knew a lot about the different rooms of the house and the activites of the familly within the house, while the renovations were happening. It is obvious that one of the workers was the watcher and that his wife was writting the letters. A worker would have had easy access to the mailbox and it wouldn't have raised suspicion.

They're receiving these letters. In their postbox, in front of the house. They have security cameras. Nothing pointed at the mailbox? No camera from a neighbor pointed at their mailbox? Now days, you could probably put a camera in your mailbox. Seems really stupid that this wasn't solved.

I was being stalked when I was 15. I worked at McDonald's, baby sat on weekend nights and at the flea market with my mom on Saturdays and Sundays. I helped my mom deliver Avon to her customers and worked off and on doing inventory at her boutique/store. I ran track in school. I was in choir. I was really, really busy. I was able to pay to have my own phone in my room, with my own number, which was privately listed, and not many people had the number. So, I started getting these calls from a young man late at night. He would ask me questions to see if I could guess who he was. He acted like it was a game of sorts. I thought it was a joke that one of my friends had given him my number and he was just messing with me. After a couple of times, I'd told him that I want to know where he got my number. He said " I know everything about you". Well.. really.. THAT was unnerving. I asked him what he meant by that. He told me what I'd worn today, where I was, who I'd seen and how I got back and forth from there. Okay.. he might have seen me. He went on to tell me that he thought I was really pretty and that I should get to know HIM better, because he was trying to get to know me. I asked him for his name. He hung up. So, I decided that was enough. I asked my mom to take me to the phone store to get my phone number changed (80's. No internet. No cell phones.) So, I got my phone number changed and gave it to about four people. McDonald's had it. My mom had it. The people I babysat for on Saturdays had it. My closest best friends had it. My father, who lived in another state, didn't even have it. Hell, I don't even think my stepfather had it. lol Anyway, it was nice and quiet for about 3 days. My mom started getting calls on her store phone and on our main home phone. I didn't ever answer the home phone. It wasn't for me, and mom had an answering machine. She'd always told me that I shouldn't worry about it. The "guy" called my mom's house number, asking for me. He called my mom's store asking for me. I had told my mom that if this guy calls, tell him that I am not here and that I don't take calls on her phone; it's a business phone at our home. The calls stopped for a couple of more days. Then he ramped up, calling over and over.. I want to talk to her. I have to tell her something. It's important.. I told my mom not to give him my new number. I quit working at McDonald's. I changed my schedule up a little bit on where I went and if I went to the flea market again.. I still babysat, but asked the parents of the little boy (he was almost 10, according to him, but really 8 1/2.. kids) if I could bring a girl friend with me babysitting because this weird guy has been following me and I am a little nervous about being alone. They agreed, knowing me well enough that I wouldn't be partying or anything. I was and am responsible. So, I am at the babysitting job with my friend, and introduce them to my friend and they said that their college aged son is home for the weekend, but he's out with friends. He may come home later and he can hang out with us if we want him to. I was sort of comforted by that. So, the night goes on and the child is in bed, asleep by some miracle. It's about 9:30 when the older son, the college freshman, comes home. He's wearing college baseball shirt and hat with jeans and sneakers. He comes in, looks at us and tips his hat, taking it off, tossing it on the couch next to me and he sat in the chair to my right. He hadn't said a word. I asked him "So, you're in college?" He just nodded did a mm hmm noise. I gathered he must be shy and it may be awkward having two strange high school girls in his house. The phone rang. Instinctively, I jumped up to get the phone. "I got it" he said. My heart leaped into my throat. He's the GUY. THIS is the guy who's been calling me, following me, harassing my mom". I turned toward my friend and said "that reminds me.. you need to call your mom at 10 to tell her if you're spending the night at my house or not". I gave her a "CALL YOUR MOM" wide eyed glare. when he hung up the phone, she called her mom. She told her mom that she was bored and to come get her. so, her mom was on the way. Thank GOD! The parents hadn't called and I couldn't for the life of me remember what restaurant they had gone to, and how was I going to explain this all to them, with their son the freaking stalker right there? So, when my friend's mom reached the house, we BOTH went outside to meet her. I told her that the older brother was here and I could actually leave now, too. I leaned into the car and whispered. please take me with you. I am scared of this guy. So, I left my purse. I left my jacket. I left the child with his brother. I went through the phone book at my house when I got home and found the restaurant that the parents had gone to. I called them at the restaurant and told them everything on the phone. All of it. They apologized repeatedly and told me that they'd call me when they got home and they'd bring my stuff to me. I told her not to. I said to bring it to my mom's store, which was closer, and the mom shopped there. She agreed. I got my stuff from my mom's store. About a month later, the guy called me at my new number, which he'd found at his parent's house. I had taken my mom's speaker phone from the store and put it in my room, just in case, because I was still pretty scared. I recorded the call. He'd threatened me. He told me that I could have had a great "thing" with him. He adored me, but now he saw who I really was and he hoped I'd "drop dead violently". So, I reported it to his parents, my parents and the police. My mom changed the locks on the house, added locks and I changed my number yet again, giving it only to my best friend. The next year, I was in the mall and I saw him with his mom and his younger brother. I walked over to the other side of the mall. His mom called out to me. She apologized again. She asked her son if he had anything to say. "nope" was his answer. That was the last time I ever saw or heard anything from him. I got lucky. But ever since, I have been afraid to give any information to people.

I am so glad you got out of that situation safely! There is a reason I only use my initials where I think I need a "name". I wasn't smart enough to come up with something 1st time around. Most people think it's some sort of awkward "CJ" or such that doesn't flow together. Or that I'm a guy. I just need to protect my ID after some crazy crap.
