what i love about vlogbrothers videos is that a lot of the time they start out silly (like this one) and then proceed to get really deep and meaningful and blow your freaking mind

Let me be clear people: the game can't be won. ever. the game is an endurance type of game, you can't win it, you can only endure as long as possible until you lose. there isn't a point that if you reach a certain time/score of not thinking about it you win. you might be able to get a high score (we should really have a proper leader board for it), but you can't win it. anyone who claims they've won the game, anyone who claims you've won the game, anyone who claims that the game is over: they're all crazy, lying and/or just unknowing of what the game really is. I LOST THE GAME, YOU ALL LOST THE GAME, WE ALL LOST THE GAME!

It could also be said that by not caring if you lose the game, you have in fact also lost. So in effect losing is winning and winning is losing and the only way to avoid all this is by not participating... Which is akin to losing... I'm lost...

The thing is, rule 1: Everyone plays the game, at all times. If you lose the game, you announce that you lost the game. 20 minutes later, you can lose the game again. Because everyone plays, and at all times. There is no "I cannot lose the game, because I already lost the game". You lose the game. Over and over and over, forever.

I needed this after playing for over 15 years

I’ve had to explain the game to these kids so many times. There are two kinds of winning the game. The first and only real victory is to not know you’re playing it, once you know you’re playing the game, you just lost it. However the second form of winning is to forget you’re playing the game. The second kind is only conditional and temporary because you already have and will still eventually lose the game, but it’s more of a scoreboard thing. Longest I’ve gone without losing was almost 3 years.

I love how this video went from a rant about John's obsession with soccer to a philosophical discussion on how to live one's life. Bravo, Hank. =)

I thought you could win the game if you saw a purple elephant, though I guess if you were to be searching for a purple elephant you would be thinking about the game, which would make you lose.

I'm glad I have the same perspective on The Game. I try every weekend to keep my boss from getting mad at me about something. It's an impossible goal. I only ever find true freedom when I sigh and declare, "You just can't win."

The Game is stupid. I refuse to acknowledge the validity of the Game. If it's not possible to win The Game, then it's not a good game. Also, if it's not possible to lose the Game, yeah, also bad game. It has to be possible to lose the Game or "winning" the game means nothing.

We play it so the only way you can win the game is if a random person comes up to you and tells you that you have won the game. They have to be completely random and you cannot have known about the game or seen or known the person before.
