The cast of The Last of Us sat down to catch up with BBC Radio 1’s film critic Ali Plumb to talk about bringing one of the most iconic video games in recent years to life on TV.
Pedro tells us about his nephews’ not so calm response to finding out he was going to be in the show, Bella talks about trying to get those iconic scenes just right, and show creator Craig Mazin let’s us know how surreal it is bringing a Clicker to life.
Also, Bella and Pedro geek out about The Worst Witch.

Love him for this! He always listens intently, makes eye contact, and gives everyone his undivided attention. Honestly, Bella is damn lucky to have Pedro as her acting partner in such a big series and their chemistry is the best part- onscreen and offscreen. He must've been such a comfort for her during that press tour.
As a veteran tlou fan, it feels so surreal having it covered in mainstream press outside of the games industry, hope everyone has a blast falling in love with it!

She's got the mix. I heard a few moments in the episode where the writing took over, and her acting had to catch up, but it only reminded me of the times I had to "shift gears" to catch up with changing situations in reality. I won't describe specifics so as not to spoil. She's better than "good enough."

It actually brings a tear to my eye that The Last Of Us has been adapted to live action so perfectly. I have been waiting for an adaptation for nearly 10 years since the game came out and not only does it look amazing but Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are PERFECTLY a cast as Joel and Ellie.

It helps that it's a very strong narrative driven game to begin with and they have the creators behind the game involved in the writing and the direction.

Maybe to people who dont know that some games can have amazing writing in them. However anyone who knows enough about gaming is that aside from the very few games like TLOU most are b grade in writing quality. Resident Evil which people name as a bad game to movie example is cringe and b grade in its writing quality

@@sgtroach1510 How is Arcane overrated? The first Sonic movie was definitely surprising but maybe Arcane just isn't your thing. To take a MOBA game, even with the lore it has, and turn it into that show is pretty much amazing. Arcane appeals to a much more specific audience, but it has gotten pretty high praise almost universally. I would need to see specific examples of why it's overrated to really consider that argument.
Pedro & Bella's chemistry is undeniable. Also noticed how he kept an arm around Bella in the last bit. All the humor and love... Undeniable moment weighed in more than diamond and gold.

The funniest time I"ve seen was during the Witcher Season 2, the actors of Ciri/Yennefer (Freya/Anya) were like "OMG YOU'RE INTERVIEWING US, WE WATCH ALL YOUR INTERVIEWS YOU'RE SO COOL". Was quite funny.
the nephews bit was so cute, imagine seeing your uncle work in an adaptation of a videogame you love!!
I love how Pedro can be a mean grinch but in real life, he's just so kind. That's some next level acting.

Testament to good writing / adaptation from the source material + good direction. That's all you need. If the script notes and dialogue conveys the emotion the original was going for, it's going to be like that in acting 100%.

I believe it will be considered one of the best shows of all time.. at least if they stay true to the game and based on the first episode which was great.
Craig’s constant smile, passion, and enthusiasm so clearly demonstrates that this show is in the right hands
I love how Pedro really seems to be Bella's comfort person by now, they have such a great bond
This game (to me) is one of the most beautiful stories created in video games over the last 10 years, and I am so happy to see it getting the mainstream recognition with this adaptation airing ❤❤❤

@@AhrthsI kinda agree.. I guess if we’re looking for any positives to this situation, the episodes are 1 and a half hours long so basically each episode is the length of a movie.. I also wish they released the whole season at once so I don’t have to wait a week to watch the next episode every time.. it’s killing me.. I’ve waited for this show for so long and now after watching the first episode I can’t take the waiting anymore.. I just want to see more. It’s an amazing video game (top 3 video games of all time in my opinion) and based of the first episode this series is going to be incredible and go down in history as one of the best tv series of all time..

As a veteran gamer (I’m late 40s), I’ve seen everything the gaming industry has given us from a story telling perspective. It always saddens me that non-gamers miss out on epic groundbreaking tales and lore. I hope this wakes the movie industry into adequately portraying some of these narrative masterpieces.

I love the story of the Last of Us to the point that everyone I know who has watched/heard of the show has approached me to say something like 'hey this is based off that game you like, right?' and it's so nice to see a whole new audience of people experience something amazing now that it's in a more accessible medium for them. Btw, if either of you are willing to give suggestions for your favorite books/games that evoke emotions like tlou I'd love to hear them!

Every role I've seen Pedro Pascal in I've thought he would make a wonderful Joel. I'm happy his nephews encouraged him to accept the role. TLOU is my personal favorite game, and I appreciate I wasn't pandered to with references to the game. The shots inside the vehicle were perfect and done with respect to their origin. I hope this keeps up for the whole show.
Those two have so much chemistry.... I can't wait to see them together in the show!!

I loved the subtle changes from the game. As someone who knows this game inside and out from shot to shot, it was refreshing to see the variation and artistic detail they put into it to change it from a user view to a filming view
Their chemistry with eachother is so amazing and it definitely shows in the last of us

I love how everyone I've seen interviewed are so excited and passionate about it. It really shows in the end product.
After watching the premiere and having the musical code revealed, the "Take On Me" remix in the trailer gave me absolute chills.... well done.

Truly such a perfect amazing casting. Loved the game and I absolutely loved this first episode. Looking forward to see the rest of it.
Talking about the nod to the games, the scene where Tommy Joel and Sarah are driving through downtown, the camera is focused in the same position as it was in the game, and it does not move from that angle unless its to show Sarah looking behind them, which also feels like a video game camera. Some serious detail from the games there.

The way Mr. Pascal nails every single role he takes is incredible.
I am so excited for this! I love both of them and I really love the whole casting of it. Especially that Ashley and Troy are in it as well. From what I've seen it's going to be awesome. I know they've made a couple of changes but I don't think they're too much of an impact. As long as an adaptation stays true to the source material changes are fine. Game and TV are different media and what you can do in a game is different to TV and vice versa. I can't wait!
My mum actually watched me play through the story of The Last of Us, in bits. And she enjoyed it. We're looking forward to watching it.

He wasn't lying. Episode 2 there's a cute giraffe plushie under a car. They are going for subtlety and foreshadowing, which i appreciate a lot!
Watched the first episode this morning and was blown away multiple times already. I played the first game in 2013 and have mentioned for years to people that of all the games I've played in my life The Last Of Us has the best story and character development I've ever seen and this first episode was amazing the intro with the talk show panel was incredible and everything so far has been amazing , I was excited when I heard HBO was making this a show and was impressed when I seen the first trailer so I have had high expectations for this series for awhile and after this first episode it has completely lived up to it so far.
As someone who has completed the game around five times I'm cautiously optimistic about this one. Looking forward to seeing it on sunday!

Only game to ever make me cry, even worse because it came out not long after my daughter was born. The show is off to a 10/10 start. Excited to keep watching.
Honestly, I can't picture anyone else being this cast Pedro fit perfectly the moment he was cast, then the rest of them fitted the puzzle and now I can't picture anyone else playing the characters
It felt so good to be connected with already and look forward to show for months and months and not be let down. I didn’t want it to end! So good.

I’m so glad that the last of us is getting some new life, it’s been my favorite game since it came out and it’s really special to me so seeing this adaptation do it so much justice is amazing
These two are so good in this show so far!
You can tell Craig is a real fan. I'm so fucking excited for this show.

From what I've been hearing from some reviewers on KZread (that got an early cut), it's likely to be going to be a pretty decent adaptation if not a really good one. I after these reviews I am super stoked to start watching and this might have raised my expectations to a dangerous level.
Just watched it, and why do I have to get the feels from the Beginning again, that part is always heartbreaking. The show is good
They articulated it perfectly showrunners and actors. Filling in tiny holes extending and expanding parts that could've been strained or restricted in 2013 video game story telling, it's a great way to view the story as fan without the exertion of fighting every antagonist on the video game journey. Finally enjoying the story with snacks in one hand and a viewing partner in the other as well as the world because the story felt like a private journey only the gaming community knew.
