    Ironically, the man in the video is holding a Cavendish banana -- which was engineered in 1836 by humans to be seedless. Without the seeds, banana trees can't reproduce and the plantations they grow on can only exist for about a quarter of a century before the ground gives out and the trees all die. The guy literally picked the one and only fruit that disproves his point entirely.

    It actually proves evolution quite nicely too. It is a nice example of intelligent design, but unfortunately for rayy it's an example of intelligent design by humans and was achieved through the same gradual genetic changes over generations that he wants to deny.

    Best part is the Banana is only the way it is by selective breeding, human activity to remove the seeds (which did make up 50% of the banana weight) and make it longer and easier to peel. So yes, it is the product of intelligent design. By humans.

    nejtilsvampe God does not want us to eat coconuts, that's why he gave them such a hard shell. Eating coconuts is blasphemous. We are only allowed food which has groves and fits perfectly into our hands. So bananas basically. Maybe carrots and sausages too. As long as it's more or less penis-shaped it's ok, I guess.

    The bad kind. The thing about not believing in hospitals, is that they're there whether or not you believe in them, and there is demonstrable evidence of their existence. You can see them, you can hear the normal hospital-type sounds when you enter them, you can touch them, you can smell them, you can even taste them if you're so inclined, but none of that can be done for their god (or any god for that matter). And they say *we're* the crazy ones.

    GuitarMasterGraeme In fairness, a lot of religious people do practice science and (because they aren't stupid) accept its theories. Most of the religious people I've encountered who disbelieve in science have a tendency to be from the kind of cultural background that fears that science goes against religion. This belief is damaging to both scientists and religious people (though they are by no means incompatible, I am referring to those of both groups who do not overlap when I say this) - scientific people start to dismiss religious people and, by extension, all religion as being superstitious and ignorant (certainly false, unless you wish to condemn - for the sake of an example - the head of the Human Genome Project as a man ignorant of science and reason), while certain religious people deny the truths reached by logic and reason (which, from a religious perspective, were tools given to us by God) purely because they worry that it might cause doubts (which from their perspective at least ought to be obvious falsehood - truth cannot disprove truth). I for one am a Christian who completely accepts evolution (among other scientific theories) as true, because that is where the evidence takes me.

Wild bananas in the past were full of poisonous hard seeds and basically inedible, it wasn't until humans began to cultivate them asexually to produce clone plants with seedless fruit that we were able to have the bananas we know today.

    One of the things I love most about David Mitchell is that he can state his point of view without feeling the need to be offensive about it. He stated what was unfair about the "Angel" program and what was wrong with the "banana argument" without resorting to the "all christians are f***ing retarded!" argument. I know David doesn't identify as an atheist but it's still comforting as a Christian to know that not all non-believers have to resort to being disrespectful and insulting. Dawkins really could take a lesson from Mitchell.

  • @Gobtik

    @Gobtik

    3 жыл бұрын

    Dawkins doesn't say all Christians are retarded, he just destroys the faith with facts. Mitchell is an atheist though he's wrong on this, there are several types of angels in the bible. The problem with this is that the depiction of an angel as a man is gibberish, they are literally described in the bible: Seraphim is a 6 winged monster with hands; Cherubum is a multiple faced abomination e.g. man, ox, lion and eagle with a semi-human form but with calve's feet, 4 hands and wings; Ophanim is a wheel with rims and spokes, eyes all the way around the edge etc. That little girl, if she saw an angel, she would have shit herself.

    I had a very religious moment once in my teens, Sadly I wasn't visited by an angel, it was by a demon... I figured it was a wake up call from God, that I needed to stop being so sinful and change my life. So I did, or well I tried, if nothing else I went to church more. Years later I learned about sleep paralysis, revisited my memory of the demonic visitation... wouldn't you know it was a perfect match. Moments before my visitation I had a very lucid dream which often precedes sleep paralysis, in the visit I was unable to move, same as sleep paralysis. So from personal experience I've seen just how easily the mind can accept a supernatural explanation for a natural occurrence we don't understand.

    I believe at one point they made mention to a "discussion program" which was "paying lip service" to aspects of religion (namely angels) via their biased approach to said discussion; this being stated on a game show which involved four atheists.

    +Idi nearly nobody believes in religion in the UK anymore. Part of why we have so many people trying to move here. Bangladesh executes atheists and look at how many of them are fleeing to Europe and India.

    My sink is backed up, I could use a plumbing angel right about now! I'm going to call a plumber and then I will start praying really hard. If a plumbing angel gets to my house and unclogs my sink before the human plumber I called then I think we have a air tight argument for the existence of god and angels. Fingers crossed, here it goes.

    I completely agree with David's comments about the Bibleman's production quality. a lot of North-American based Evangelical broadcasts are a kin to a taping of your children's school play. The production quality is limited to cutting to different cameras with precise angles on their subjects. The special effects and costumes are circa late 70s-mid 80s Canadian local programming or high-budget PBS specials. it's an absolute joke! for organizations that clear millions of dollars annually, they love to really believe they drive home the point that they are actually "not for profit", but that's horseshit. I'm pretty sure John Hagee doesn't show up on television every week in a department store suit and WalMart shoes.
