I have a 2005 LR3 SE with 165k and have never had any issues. I also have a 2010 LR4 with 194k that has also been solid. Both are on the original air suspension. I bought them both used, but I’ve put over 100k on each of them. My daughter drives the LR3 and regularly commutes between Littleton and Boulder (45 miles each way), and my wife and I load up the LR4 and drive up to the mountains almost every weekend. We just took it on a 3k road trip to visit family in Galveston and it never broke a sweat cruising at 85+ for hours on end. I do take care of both of these vehicles and stay on top of regular maintenance, but so far they have been as reliable as anything else I’ve ever driven.

@@DorDeKrey I definitely like the 5.0 in the LR4 better than the 4.4 in the LR3. It never feels like it’s working very hard, even at altitude. The extra 75 hp makes a huge difference. I heard horror stories about bad timing chain tensioners so I put some $ away to have the timing chains done, but I’ve had the vehicle for 8 years and have driven over 110k and I’m still waiting to spend it. Even with 190k on the odometer, if the chain goes tomorrow I’d fix it. Everything else still works great. Even the seats look new. When the EAS eventually fails I’ll probably convert to coils just because all of the hoses and plastic bits are almost 15 years old and I don’t want to be chasing little issues. Same with the LR3.

Tommy doing his rant while casually, and comfortably, driving his LR3 in Moab with the horizon in the background changing angles is such an elegant flex. 😂 I've been a Land Rover owner for almost 30 yrs, and I bought my current '06 RRS brand new back in late '05 and it's still going strong after 185k miles. But having said that, I also bought my first Toyota truck this past fall and I hope to have many many years and smiles to explore the outdoors with it. And congrats on the marriage!

The secret to Land Rover ownership is to keep a couple of minor things broken. When you try to make it perfect it will have a total hissy fit and find new ways of pissing you off. Least that's what nearly 30 years of ownership has taught me 😂

Bought my LR3 almost 3 years ago for a winter beater. I love it so much that it's now my daily. It's great for camping/overlanding, too. The back seats fold flat so i can sleep in the back, and I like that you can leave the sunroof open at night for fresh air without insects coming by closing the screen. 180k and still smooth as silk! Thanks again for the recommendation!

The nice thing about the 4.0L Ford Cologne V6 is they are fairly understressed and reliable. The SOHC version introduced in 1997 in the Explorer did have issues with the timing chain cassettes, but an improved version was introduced in 2002. As long as you do regular oil changes, and replace the chain tensioners (which just bolt in a plug from outside the engine) as soon as you hear any startup rattle, they can go for hundreds of thousands of miles.

I have a 2005 LR3 and it is such a phenomenal car. It isn't perfect, and at 150k miles needed some work, but does everything so well. It was very thoughtfully designed. It is smooth, comfortable and has enough power with the 4.4. I can't imagine a better vehicle for the money or even double the money. They are also more reliable than the LR4 due to the bad timing chains in the LR4 engines. As far as cost for the Defender, it is more expensive, but not too far off from jeeps. The Rubicon is $50k+ A lightly used defender with CPO warranty would be about the same, or the defender 110 without too many options is in the 70ish range, a good a mount more, but you get more. I think I'd get a defender over the discovery 5, although the disco 5 is a good option too.

Moab in the ‘90’s and early 2000’s was chock full of Discoveries, not as many, but a visible amount of Defenders representing Land Rover. Wrangler TJ’s and YJ’s but really the only other SUC style 4wd’s were cherokees and Land Cruisers. It’s weird to me to see so few Land Rovers in the backcountry but it kind of shows the direction the brand went and how many got burned with more modern versions.

With the right to repair movement I can flash the JL and LR electronics. The LR service website is more challenging to navigate. The Stellantis website is top notch. If you service the vehicles more frequently than the manufacturers recommend, the vehicles will last a long time. Arguably most of the cohort that buys LR products are not going to use the rig in Moab

Had it for almost 7 years and 244k klms and it runs like a swiss watch, had a few issues along the way but nothing i couldn't fix at home. I replaced my front struts 2 months ago due to one splitting and the ride is back to awesome again, i would think that your shocks would be worn out by now even if the air bags are still good. Having a base model has advantages as its easy to upgrade the stereo and add steering wheel switches, i put a 10" android head unit in which gives me android auto, bluetooth, wifi, reversing camera and GPS. Time for you to start throwing some cash at it and make it even better.

Congratulations, and as for that as a honeymoon, a couple of decades back when I was climbing Kilimanjaro, there was an American couple who had just got married and seemed to think that sharing mountain huts on Africa's highest mountain was a great way to start married life. That was serious off-road, just on foot though.

Love the head out the window to make your point at 1:06 Tommy! To car lovers in general though - we should all hold the manufacturers to a high standard when it comes to building, improving and fixing their vehicles, but criticizing other car loves for their preferences is asinine. I've driven some of the 'best' and 'worst' brands but I love driving regardless. The more you get to know a vehicle and its quirks, the more it grows on you.

Hold on a second. IIRC it was you lot that were always saying the air suspension on LR's was going to fail. Mine is now over 150,000 miles (14yrs old) still original air suspension.

I will never financially recover from my time owning an LR4.. On the rare occasion it wasn't at the service center, I did love driving it.

Congratulations Tommy!! I wish you and Morgan a happy and adventure live together! And what about your LR 3, I personally think this model has the most beautiful design of all LR Disco's and Defenders. Also the New Defender.....And no other brand of SUV comes close, in my opinion.

Lol, they can be staunch and long lasting. Disco 2 owner and never had any issues once put a new AC Delco 80usd fuel pump into tank. Wellllll both sunroofs poured water in.
