You Gotta Have Heart (from Damn Yankees)
Спорт
It's the first day of the MLB season! What better way to celebrate, than with song.
This 1958 film was made by Warner Bros. and directed by George Abbott and Stanley Donen.
Russ Brown as Benny Van Buren (Manager)
Nathaniel Frey as Smokey (short stocky player)
James Komack as Rocky (younger player, sings high part)
Albert Linville as Vernon (tall balding player)

Had to hear this again…one of my Dad’s favorite songs to sing around the house…miss you Daddy ❤
I'm only 64, but I remember this song playing on the radio when I was a child-my mom loved music, and so do I. I like this song! 😊
If you haven't ever watched this movie - do yourself a favor and watch it. It's damn good start to finish. Makes ya smile and maybe even shed a tear or two.

Thanks for the must see" movie reference ! Will dew!
for those of you who don't know the baseball coach was the same actor who played the commanding officer in the film version of South Pacific. he was also in the original show of damn Yankees
My father was a Yankees fan even tho we lived in Bklyn...we would ride the subway up to the old Yankee Stadium...Mickey Mantle was my hero. Then a Mets fan....and Colorado rockies fan. Loved damn Yankees and Gwen Verdun. Rooted for the Washington Nationals last year ! May i suggest you watch Penny Marshall's A League of their Own.
I used to watch this movie on TV in the late 1960s and early 1970s with my family. We were eating Jiffy Pop Popcorn and drinking lemonade and singing along with this song.

What’s this movie called. I’m barely getting into baseball (age 26). I’ve fallen in love with baseball as it feels I have an opportunity to live a childhood that was once robbed.

Well, going to nit-pick a little bit... just "Damn Yankees" not "The Damn Yankees"... but you got the point across 👍
They should play and perform this song the first day of every baseball season...on the field! What an inspiring song!
They may be lousy ballplayers, but they sure can harmonize!

I LOVED THIS MOVIE! [I SAW IT IN 1958] AND, I LOVE THIS SONG! AS A COLLEGE BIOLOGY TEACHER, I PLAYED THIS SONG FOR MY CLASS TO KICK OFF OUR LESSON ON OUR HUMAN HEART. THEY LOVED IT!
this was my grandfathers favorite song, Richard R. Jordan of Groton, CT. he preformed many times in local productions of this musical. He unfortunately passed away this past October. I sing this song at least once a day now, i never quite appreciated its beauty until now.

Congrats on winning the World Series, Nationals!
What a marvelous number. So simple yet so effective. Much of the appeal comes from the actor’s’ expressions and reactions.

The absolutely perfect group for this Magnificant song.
Awesome! No need for a new movie version of this show. It is a classic on its own.
Jimmie was so thrilled to be directed by George Abbott! Loved his high notes as 'Rocky'. (I worked for Jimmie Komack, during his "Chico and the Man" series, which he created!). Still so fun to watch this!
I grew up a Washington Senators fan, so this clip means a lot to me. Thanx for sharing!!
This brings me back . I remember when there was a rain delay during a Braves game ( in old Atlanta Fulton County Stadium ) they would always play this clip on the video board . I haven't seen or heart this in years . Thanks for posting this ! 👍

What an inspiring song, brings tears to my eyes. All in a encouraging way. Go out and spread" Love "
I saw a community theatre troupe do this play (did it very well). Lola was played by the president of city council. When she pushed an ordinance thru, we nodded and said, "What Lola wants, Lola gets."
I just barely got back from that play at my college campus. It was amazing. Those guys really knocked it out of the park.
I remember hearing this in a commercial when I was a kid 40 years ago in Michigan. The commercial was promoting the Art museum in Detroit and they sang "you gotta have Art"

in the 60s this movie played the old million $ movie. once a day and twice on the weekend. I saw it every time and fell in love with it. I only wish I could have seen the live show
This movie makes me root for the underdog. Perhaps that is why I have been a Cleveland Browns Fan for nearly 50 years. Every year you hope that it is going to be your year, but you never give up no matter how many times your team loses.
2019 NATIONALS...Miles and and miles of heart!!

Da cubs got heart! A few years ago a stray kitty got loose on the field during a game and cubs management saw to it that the kitty was rescued and taken to a no-kill cat shelter, The Tree House. ☺

Cub fans are awesome no doubt about it. Loyalty is what being a fan is all about. I can relate. I'm a New York Ranger fan. 54 years without the Cup and the building was full every night.
"Damn Yankees" (the original) was the first Broadway show I saw (when I was 10)...Baseball and a semi-undressed Gwen Vernon (as Lola)...Broadway theater shows were for me!

We did Damn Yankees when I was in HS & it was awesome XD
2:34 "what's the use of crying?" imagine that Tom Hanks bursts out of a time warp shouting "THERE'S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL!!"
Before my time really, but a wonderful part of the soundtrack of this life. Positive thinking at it's finest.
The Nats are back. Proving that you've gotta have heart! Notes: the film shows crowd shots from dear old Griffith Stadium, the park with some of the longest dimensions and oddest configurations in baseball. See the zig-zag CF wall? It had to be built around the back yards of a few DC townhouses (= NY brownstones) owned by people who would not sell. Straightaway CF was shorter than a few feet to the right. RF wall was at least 30 feet high. LF wall, the bleachers, only ten feet high, but originally 405 feet on the line; a short 350 feet when this was filmed. Nats left-fielder Roy Sievers is the number 2 who trots out Joe Hardy's homers. Sievers was AL HR champ in 1957. The manager is clearly a filmed version of Bucky Harris, three-time Washington manager. The owner is much like Clark Griffith, a founder of the AL as a player -- he was leader of the players who bolted the NL to the AL. The Joe Hardy Clubs are like the Knothole Gang, a kids' club chaired by Bob Wolff, the Senators' Hall of Fame TV broadcaster...still working today at about 92 years old. Bob is a sports reporter for a Long Island station. Bob looks somewhat different than 60 years ago, but the voice is the same. Incidentally, Bob has given the Library of Congress several thousand hours of his broadcasts. I can't wait for them to be prepared and put on line.
This song played over and over and over on the radio. For the record version, the opening was changed to "Listen to me YOU GUYS" as I recall. :) The Washington Senators became to Minnesota Twins in 1960.
The dude who wrote this just pass away, Great music from a by gone time.
I'm pgoing thrtough an extremely challenging time in my life(might be homeless soon). While walking my dog today, this song popped inmy head and keeps playing over and over. I couldn't remember having heard it before, so As soon as I could, I looked it up and got here!

I remember during rain delays at Old Atlanta Fulton County Stadium , they used to play this clip on the big scoreboard during rain delays back in the 70's , this brings me back !
Some great words that a lot should REALLY listen to.
I remember playing Smokey in a school production of this show. Best role I ever had. XD
I have a lot of love for this song, this is a song we sang this song during theater club at my school and I still most of the words.
I knew this song from when i was much younger, my mom would play it for me. I only figured out recently that it’s from this musical when I watched it with her to prepare for my audition for a production of this show. Btw i got in, as Smokey.
This song makes me happy. I love this song!!!!!!
Yeah I was in the drama club in HS - we did Damn Yankees. It was a blast. Great times. :)

I have a notion to second that emotion ! Such a happy, heartwarming tune ! Thanks for your comment ! :-)
I just watched the play at my highschool. It was amazing. The songs were catchy and silly enough, i found myself singing along to most of them. It was comical and very interesting. Half of the cast was full of my greatest friends and i had no idea how good of actors they were. They really gave me quite an interest in this movie. I'll have to watch it.
The Texas Rangers came from a reincarnation of the Washington Senators. While not the same Senators depicted in “Damn Yankees,” the lack of success by these new Senators seemed to haunt the Rangers over the years. Using the musical as an inspiration we played, “You Gotta Have Heart” before every WS game and the Rangers won whenever we played the scene. Coincide? Absolutely, but in the end, they had heart. Congratulations to the Texas Rangers World Series Champs 2023.
Closest to a foolproof musical number . . . as you can reasonably expect. All kinds of singers can do this justice . . .
Wonderful musical, marvelous and catchy tune but, believe me, if you had ever seen the old Washington Senators play in Griffiths Stadium in D. C. in the 50s, you'd realize that heart just ain't enough. They were miserable! My dad took me to a three-game series with the Yanks and that's when I started to dig The Mick, Whitey Ford, Yogi, and the crew. Never looked back until the Giants moved to S. F. and Willie Mays became my other hero.

Reno Bertoia ....! And then Jimmy Piersall added his antics in center field or right field. I remember when he just sat down out there cuz the game was getting too boring for him! Ah, the Senators ... well at least you could find somebody to give you a signature after the game.
this song helps me.!!!

LOVE the song! even though I also love the Damn Yankees!

This was the great stuff that we have forgotten.... today.....You gotta have heart!!!
Yay, Nats!! All heart.
“The team has been consistent. Yeah we always lose!” Ha ha ha ha love it!
Next to "Goodbye Old girl," and "Those were the good old days," this is my favorite song from the whole musical.

That was so good. Thank you for posting. Watched this when I was a kid.
I played baseball. Then in '79 I saw All That Jazz ! I danced around the bases after that.
Great memory. Our Mother took us to see the Kenley Players production of Damn Yankees at The Ohio Theater in Columbus, Ohio when we were kids. Vincent Price played the devil. 😊
Great stuff! Thanks for posting--always loved this song.
Saw this in theatre in the round in Framingham Mass with Tony Perkins as Joe Hardy. Much more believable than as Jimmy Piersal.

I grew up in MIchigan and remember that commercial as well. Thanks for reminding me.
To all those who put together productions of Damn Yankees need to view this, especially this "Heart" sequence which holds true to the original libretto. I've looked all over youtube and found less-than-interesting renditions of this part of the show. For one thing, please notice that "Heart" is a quartet; not a quintet or group. It is 4-part barber-shop harmony (SATB), pure and simple. If your tenor cannot attack the high note on the last chord, don't do the song.
God, i had to lip sync this song for my theater class, it is my fave song now xD
My Mom used to sing this to me, but I don't think I ever saw this film or play. i think it was "Damn Yankees"
i sang this for my schools musical, we stool the show with this
