There's a similar thing from a monster in Creature Codex (book of monsters made by Kobold Press) called a nightgarm, which eats people and then births an identical replica of them shortly after. The only difference is that they are completely loyal to the beast, except for one in 12, who must make a check every day, being fully severed from the thing's control on a success, presumably horrified by everything that has happened to it.

Having a party fail a mission can be a very good thing. It teaches them that they aren't invincible, and that they can lose if they don't play their cards right. Winning everything can go to their heads and put them into bad situations.

@@lindseyfrancesco4 Sometimes a loss is because of bad party choices, but they don't know it was their choices that led to it. Like, one time, I had a party argue, in character, in front of a dungeon entrance. The guard that was posted inside heard them, so he barricaded the entrance and they couldn't get in that way. The party never found out that the entrance was originally open and they could have entered through there if they had been more careful, but they assumed that it was meant to be closed. Instead, I pulled a secret side entrance out of thin air that put them further from the goal than they otherwise would have been. All of this to say that sometimes a party fails at something and never even knows they failed that thing in the first place and assume they're doing alright.

One of my parties "best" sessions for a given value of the word involved failing to stop a hag and recover a chieftains soul she had stolen. They returned unsuccessfully to find most of their allies in the tribe killed and ended up having to leave the region. Didn't kill any of them, they barely took damage. But that was the session our rogue realized they weren't unbeatable, that they could loose.

If I used this encounter, I'd be sure to play up how the child who was mostly raised by a hag would speak and act. Like, that orc child would be speaking in riddles and rhymes. Insults would be compliments. They'd be afraid of certain, specific mundane things due to life experience of ladles speaking at night. Full on blue-orange morality.

Hags have always been one of my favorite things to use as a DM. The freedom of creativity they offer just gives me such a flood of ideas every time I prep an encounter with them. The different methods of trickery and manipulation they can use give me lots of ways to surprise/totally blindside my players. I like making their magic work a bit differently than player magic so they don't necessarily follow the same rules, making them even more unpredictable (though of course not in an unfair or insurmountable way), and I love building them around a theme and then giving each spell they use a unique description centered around it, making them feel like unique characters and making it difficult for players to immediately know what spells they're using. For one coven, I gave them all toad familiars that were also their spellcasting focus and somehow involved in nearly every spell they cast. My players always quickly come to hate all old women and then proceed to commit lots of geriatricide. Just makes me have to get more creative with the hags' disguises

As a fellow massive hag fan I also absolutely LOVE hags!! Heck, I have a coven of them as some of my bbegs for my home campaign right now! And I've always been interested in making them different or unique but I find it really difficult how to flavor their magic as so it's weird and mechanically different and funky from the players but also extremely scary and I truly struggle with this. I would love nothing more if you had some ideas that could help me out! We're dealing with an extremely powerful almost demi god level green, annis, and sea hag and I rlly wanna make em different but it's hard! Can you spit some ideas?

@@peytonkennedy9987 some good questions I often ask myself to flesh them out are things like what's the power dynamic? Is one a clear leader, or are they equal? Is the leader, if existent, respected or only feared and possibly plotted against? Do the hags work together well or subtlely undermine each other at every given opportunity? How did they meet? Maybe they're related? How similar are they to each other? They can have different personalities while still sharing a theme, or all have totally different appearances and spellcasting styles. Good places to start forming ideas about that are thinking about where they live, and maybe give them a theme based on a prevalent animal, element, or feature of their environment, like insects, swamp water, ash, amphibians, coral, maybe even glass or metal if they live in an urban environment

@@peytonkennedy9987 Here's some brainstormed notes I made for an encounter I ran like 3 years ago, if you want a few examples. This was for a Curse of Strahd campaign that I heavily modified -Ideas for spell descriptions: Toads are spellcasting focus. Magic Missile- the hag pulls a toad from her bag and squeezes it a few times rapidly, once for each dart. With each squeeze, a target-seeking dart of slightly glowing, green liquid flies out and into the target. Detect Magic- squeeze toad, it vomits all over the target. Color signifies school. Plane Shift- cloud of mist forms below her, and she either sinks into it or is dragged into it. Sleep- hag throws a sticky, pollen-like substance over the target Ray of Enfeeblement- hag squeezes toad; long ropey strands of sticky liquid cover the target. Identify- hag squeezes toad; it vomits on the target. Hag studies vomit for signs. Ray of Sickness- hag squeezes toad and it sends out a pulsating strand of slimelike energy. Hold Person- hag throws a dart coated in mind-affecting poison. Locate Object- hag studies toad vomit. Bestow Curse- varies depending on effect; reference other examples. Counterspell- squeeze toad; it’s projectile hits the spell and causes it to explode. Hag targets anything within the spell’s range of her choosing. Lightning Bolt- squeeze toad; green electricity forms in it’s stomach and flows through her hand over to her pointed finger and streaks toward the target. Phantasmal Killer- hag scratches toad; target feels scratch mentally and the spell takes effect. Polymorph- hag scratches toad and makes eye contact with target. Hag almost always chooses toads as the transformation Contact Other Plane- toad vomit; hag uses it like a limited two way scrying pool for communication Scrying- toad vomit is used for scrying pool Eyebite- hag scratches and squeezes toad at the same time. Sickly green energy flows from it’s stomach, up through her arms to her eyes, which take on the subtle glow, and the spell takes effect. Morgantha (leader) spell descriptions: Dispel Magic- Glupnok (her toad familiar) vomits, vomit affects the magic like acid, slowly melting it away and suppressing it. Dream- Morgantha swallows Glupnok whole and alive. While it wriggles inside her, she goes to sleep and the spell takes effect. When it ends, the toad crawls back up her throat and she pulls it out of her mouth, covered in saliva, stomach acids, and questionable slime, but completely unharmed. Legend Lore- Morgantha describes her question to Glupnok. Their eyes both glow green faintly and briefly, and the spell takes effect. Find Familiar- Glupnok the Fiend Toad. Melts into green, acidic, steaming goo and evaporates when he disappears. Touch spell delivery descriptions similar to normal ones, but with less hag/toad interaction. Glupnok and Morgantha can concentrate on two spells from the same source simultaneously through shared spellcasting.

I wanna play as a Hexblood who was eaten and rebirthed by a Hag, developed strange powers and dark urges, but has been resisting them ever since the quickening. Maybe they set out as an adventurer to a) leave their village and protect their family from themselves, and b) learn more about her powers and master her connection to nature, the faewild, and the darker side of old magic. I think I'd stat her as an Artifacer Alchemist, or a Wizard with the Witherbloom UA Subclass and the Selesnya Initiate background for extra nature spells on her spell list. I never bought Volo's Guide, but one thing about it that I love (I've read a friend's copy) is that it specifically says that DM can invent magical abilities for hags on the spot ("Weird Magic" it calls it). In general, when it comes to more supernatural creatures, I often treat the statblock in the books as what they can do in combat and let them do outside of combat whatever I think would be logical for them to be able to do. But with hags, it is canon (at least in Volo's) that you don't have to stick to the statblock.

Well one of my characters made a deal with one but thankfully its very straightforward and hard for her to twist. We struggled with some undead awhile back and my rogue wanted a magical backup weapon to better prepare himself for next time. She agreed but I had to give my full name and a drop of blood to empower the ritual used to create the weapon and I promised to help her and her village when they needed it. My rogue agreed to the deal not knowing what she actually was. Now the dm pointed out that while often evil hag's aren't stupid. And my rouge is a soulknife and thus his psychic abilities are rare enough for her to get a lot of use out of. She isn't going to just waste a powerful asset so I might not be entirely screwed here.

If the party doesn't learn that by the 13th birthday she'll become a hag, that'll be a nasty surprise following up a few in game months later.

So, one concept I've had for a campaign element is a random travel encounter system that is more than just combat encounters or traps, but also has flavor encounters, small random dungeons, etc. One of the ideas I had for one of the flavor encounters that can only appear in a forest is that the party stumbles across a coven of three green hags that basically reenact the Double Double Toil and Trouble scene from Macbeth. If you approach them, they and their cauldron turn invisible and leave, laughing the whole time. For the next three encounters the DM then makes an additional D20 roll when rolling to generate an encounter for the sole purpose of freaking out the players.

Going to run this one, but with 2 Orc brothers and one very sad Orc dad, adding the fact that the hag also killed the family's mom and turned her into a zombie that plays with the kid under her command, wich will envolve the mom attacking her husband and 2 sons... but I will give them a partially good ending, allowing them to kill the hag and give them a hint of a mystical cure to the curse bestowed upon the daughter. Love this!

I accidently made the best reaccuring villain through the hag. Green hag. Basically stolen an innocent girl's identity (Murdered her, obviously...), a man in the village got suspicious of her, and convinced a few of his friends she wasn't the real "Mindy" (Childhood friend and hunter so he had a good perception). She finds out about their suspicions, and manage to frame them for stealing and hurting another women in the village. They have to run to avoid getting persecuted. Ends up in a small gang that become known for stealing and killing innocent travelers. (half right. They do steal to survive, but she is the one that kills the travelers.) She continue to destroy their lives, but they just will not die and avoid getting caught by the guards. In comes the PCs, and she basically manage to manipulate them into believing that there are some bandits messing around. They become a bit suspicious of her for several minor lies and weird interactions with some of the other townspeople, but they go on the quest to kill the bandits. To my suprise and delight they actually stop and listen to the "bandits" after they notice non of them have sharp weapons (The murdered people seemed to have been killed by someone using a sharp weapon) They talk to them. Find out about the suspicions. Choose to help the so called bandits and manage to sneak the childhood friend back to the village and into Mindy's house. End up finding a secret basement thanks to his help, and they discover her little witch area. Obviously, "Mindy" have been following them all along, and attacks now that she known the dig is up. Nearly kills them, but ends up running away barely alive thanks to the moonbeam that kept her from going invisible. The town turns a bit more normal, and the "bandits" gets somewhat cleared. "Mindy" now have a new target. Does everything in her power to mess up the PCs, and have a tendency of making their lives a whole lot harder. She doesn't outright follow them, that wouldn't be in her nature, but she is still pissed her former plan got ruined, so now she is aiming bigger...and just happen to be somewhere the PCs were headed to as well...and she KNOWS that

One possibly-terrible character concept that I stand by is a hag’s child who rebels and tries to become good, managing to freeze her aging process before she transforms- resulting in an angsty 12yo with all the sorcerous powers of an ancient fey’s heir. I really want to make this work someday but idk how I’d do a young girl character (I’m a dude) without coming off as creepy

You can always up the age of transformation, or change the magic spell. If you up the age to say... 18 (because i am biased by the circumstances of my own life) you can have all the angst of a child growing up to understand their curse fully. The child finally begins to grasp the weight of their situation, the sheer horror and depravity of the curse inflicted upon them. They will only get a taste of normal life, only a the slightest hint of what it means to be a normal adult. And then it will all be ripped away and twisted by senseless malevolence. A monster causing pain for the sake of causing pain. Desperate to escape such a fate, the child manages, somehow, to halt their transformation. To prevent the worst from coming to pass. Total transformation is powerful magic, and not without cost. To meddle so deeply with another being leaves them open to further alterations. Magic is also fickle. Or perhaps you can change the spell to be one that simply halts the transformation, or frees the PC of the transformation, but not without cost. I was reading about making a Hag a warlock patron the other day. This could be a potential backstory. A would-be child of a hag, somewhat freed of the curse, but still forever tainted by the Hag's dark magic.

The only time I’ve dealt with a green hag was from the worst game I’d ever ever played…long story short, she was gather child bones and decided to pick a bone with us next. She turned invisible to try and get some sneaky attacks off, but the warlock cast Cause Fear on her (or maybe it was the other way around idk it’s been years), so now she couldn’t approach us with her only attacks being melee, and our only course of action was to wait for to turn visible and pelt her with ranged attacks while the spell kept her away. So we did exactly that. It really sucked XP

RAW, invisibility doesn't prevent attacks of opportunity, you're still giving out sounds that can allow a creature to figure out where you are. You need to take the Hide action first.
