Another way would be to use card sleeves. It might not be the best if you want to recreate the video game feel as close as possible, but if you actually want to play a irl game it feels so much nicer. You could just put the sigils and stats in the sleeves like the "laminated with slit" cards. Otherwise, Mystic Vale handles "card customizing" in a cool way. You have full sized see-through cards with only the modified part printed. It would be easier to get the modifications out of the sleeves with those but I dont know if its really worth the cost of another deck just for sigils.

Honestly, I'm surprised he didn't mention them for the alternatives; especially since he ordered a bunch of printed cards. At least with sleeves, you don't have to worry about ruining the cards with adhesive or writing on them. Tho, I think slipping in the stats & sigils into the sleeve with the card, like the "laminated with slit" cards, is the best balance between usability & affordability.

It’s was always like a head cannon for me that in shows like yugioh the cards were made using metal or something of the sort since the cards are commonly shown to be thrown like ninja stars and stick into concrete walls or hurt someone’s hand enough to drop what there holding, or survive things like being thrown in water for extended periods of time.

Mystic Vale is a board game that tries to do something similar - it's basically the sleeves idea and I think it can really work. It's somewhat modular even.

Was gonna comment, John D. Clair has a few games that work within his card crafting system that work in different ways to upgrade cards

I think I like the lamination with a slit idea the most, since you can write damage modifiers on the cards and then add sigils. As others have ponited out using cards sleeves would also work, especialy completely clear and thin ones so they don't add too much bulk and you can still see card backs.

use window cling for laminated cards, it's like a reusable sticker. edit: They're also very thin and easy to remove and apply

@Rymirai its not the stickiness, but the integrity of the decal. They will eventually warp and tear. They are good for a short term, but in the long term, they would need to be replaced.

One thing that's probably also important is shufflability. How do the sigils hold up when shuffling a deck of cards?

Gecko tape / nano tape / reusable stickers work very well on laminated cards and can be used forever :)

I hope people also make puzzle layouts for this, like 'this is the order of cards', like how the random encounters work with Leshy.

I think I would do a few things differently if I were to design inscription in real life. Instead of having real scissors and real teeth, I tried to make the game as card based as possible, The items you have on the side are cards with one-time use abilities. The totem is comprised of 2 cards. (one with the head/animal type, and the one beneath it poking out half-way, showing the sigil type thats given to the animal type on top) and the side loading penny sleeves idea is perfect if you add outer sleeves to the cards. I'd use Cereal box cardboard for the card sigils as they're flat enough to be flush and strong enough to last a long time.

the open lamination option also allows you to be able to shuffle your cards without the sigils falling off

Hi. Avid Bakugan enjoyer here. Yes, The cards were in fact magnetic, And they used the same method as your first idea. They used a sheet of metal inside them to make them magnetic. The way that they kept you from cutting yourself on them is by adding a thin border where there was no metal around the edge, And I think if you make some sort of alignment jig, This would do you well- But when I went to figure out myself what was inside a Bakugan Gate Card, I learned the same thing you did... Those things are SHARP AS HELL. Sliced my middle finger, Stung like a bitch. Decided to call off that project of extracting it when I found out how dangerous it was, And just threw the already trashed card away.

When I first saw these videos I went looking and found printable magnetic sheets that would work for the cards to magnetically attach the sigils. They where some stuff as fridge magnets and I assume the tape you used.

I feel like having slightly magnetic playing cards (like normal cards) could be good for something like solitaire to ensure that they stay in place, if you had say a metal table to play on

Could you make a dry erase stamp with each sigil? That would make drawing sigils on laminated cards much less cumbersome and more consistent

If you cut the design out of something absorbent you might be able to MacGyver something out of a refillable board pen cartridge like a pilot Vboardmaster Alternatively, if you *didn't* laminate the cards, pilot also does a whole range of stamps using their erasable pen ink. It wouldn't be a 1 to 1 match, but you could use those and simply erase them after use

That was my idea too, glad to see someone else down here also came to that conclusion. The only downside would be that when stacking and sliding the cards against each other, like with shuffling, the stamps could get damaged, but it's not a big deal really.

You could also make a stencil and just use a pen, having the effects of 3:20 without actually having to draw the sigil each time

So couple months ago I started my project on making those cards. I tried couple methods and landed with magnets. I used magnetic foil for the sigils and steel foil for the cards. It's easy to cut, and make them fast. (I made like 3/4 of all the cards) I think the only downside is that they are thick. I used the thinnest foil i could get. Because of its thickness they are really nice to hold. I stopped making them because I run out of ink. I forgot about it and today I saw your video. Maybe sometime I'll finish them.

This is very cool that you found so many ways to how add more sigils to cards but here is the real question: How to make merge card mechanic?

You could also make a valcro like card. Where the cards have either small wool layer or a spot for it.

If you put the cards in card sleeves then take a small sheet of laminated paper the size of the card in them you get the same effect. You can take the insert out, draw the symbol on it, slide it back in and it won't smear the other cards. You can keep a reference sheet nearby to remind everyone what the effects are. Penny sleeves would be perfect, especially if you mess around with them a bit

I'm now I am now imagining someone actually tear out their teeth or an eye to win a game...

You can get sleeves in standard card sizes and perfect fits from most nane brands if sleeves can come as side-loaders such as you had with the laminated cards with the side-pocket.

I've been thinking about this kind of thing for a while. I had seen some of the original videos that showcased magnetic inscryption cards, and they seemed cool, but the more i thought about it the more i realized how hard it would be to actually play a game with them. The idea of using a card in a card sleeve, like the laminated cards with a slit, always stuck out to me as the best solution, possibly with little card stock sigils to slip in. Another thought that occurred was if this was more similar to the original game and campfires existed that could up the stats (which, as a side note, it would be the best thing in the world if someone made a full 1-2 player inscryption board game, possibly even with expansions for the other 3 scrybes. I would love to work on making that game, playtesting, or simply just being a customer for it). The best solution for the campfire idea i thought of was just another sigil indicating an addition of 1 or more to attack and health. I would love to see more inscryption irl stuff. It would be the coolest thing ever to see a full board game one day.

What I did was draw the temporary modifiers on a plastic sheet cut to the size of the card and put it inside its sleeve. It may not look like the most professional method, but for me it is the easiest and cleanest way to play.

I wonder if Nano suction sheet would stick well to laminated cards. Might be worth a try!

Ferromagnetic material can be safely incorporated into the card by making them smaller than the card itself, rounding its corners and then laminating the whole card with it inside.

A niche option depending on what you wanna do is to use transparent velcro on the 4 corners and either attach patches or modifier cards. If you make a yarn themed game it may look great.

I made my cards by folding the printed out paper onto bicycle playing cards. To get the sigils on, I use very cheap ultra thin tape. From my experience, the cards have not been damaged at all from this. Then for all the player’s cards, I put them in perfect fit sleeves (inners). My players can shuffle the cards all they want and those sigils aren’t going anywhere!

This would probably work really well on an Inscryption Displate.

When preparing metal sheets, you have to numb down the edges because they're so sharp! Usually with a bladed etching tool (Löffelschaber)or a file (files are messy and take too long though) After you're done they're very safe to handle! So if anyone gets inspired but goes off metal anyway haha. God, these are so nice though.

Theres a deckbyilder game out there that uses transparent cards. Instead of adding to your deck, you puechase modifications and slide them into the main cards sleeve. The result is more modifications is thicker, but its very clean.

The sleeve is the best method. I’ve played card builder board games that already use that

Yup, essentially a cleaner version of the laminated with an opening. They may clear versions as well as custom backs if you want the original design to show through

Very cool! Magic the Gathering has a set called Unfinity that does something similar Stickers come in the pack and you can stick them to the card to customize and upgrade them I'm sure if the stickers are placed on sleeves, they can be reused, or at least be removed without damaging the cards

I liked the idea with the marker. Maybe someone could go as far as creating special stamps for it, so you dont have to draw the sigil.

Currently I just use little sticky circles that I can write on, but the issue there is that my cards aren’t laminated so if you aren’t careful they’ll rip when you take the circles back off

Star realms legacy has a similare feature, they use stickers for the upgrades and card-sleeves so that they are shuffleable.

Ink pad and stamps for wipe clear? Feels like it would have quite a fun "game feel" to have to stamp on your upgrade instead of tacking the upgrade on. Also keeps the amount of "pieces" very low - just one stamp for each upgrade type.

This is probably way more complicated than you'd like, but you might be able to use a set of stamps and a pad of dry-erase marker ink. Not sure where you'd get the ink from though.

Another option i think would be... something that i don't know what it is: i remember from my childhood having a children book with some sort of reusable stickers without adhesive that were holding to the pages or other smooth surfaces due to some material magic.

And that's how I learned that there are irl inscryption cards

I wonder if you could cobine the drawing on method with some kind of stencil or stamp? So you stamp them on using stamp with the same kind of "ink" as a whiteboard pen.

me personally i am not a fan of all those other solutions they just simply do not have the same look and feel as the magnetic idea which is the closest ive seen to having the same look and feel as the actual game. i only have 2 potential alternative ideas. either somehow, someway making use of the electrostatic effect, or just... building the sigils *into* the card, instead of trying to make them be removable. that last one would be super easy to do. it would have the downside of needing a lot more cards with various sigil combinations, up to 5 since that's the max number of sigils that'll be displayed in the game anyway (and also not 2 of the same one at the same time), and probably needing to make cards on demand for the sigil needs, but it would have the upside of probably being the absolute *easiest* to make by hand by far with absolutely 0 compromise on look and feel and fantasy.

I haven’t done the math, but with a combination of 1-5 sigils you are most likely going to get thousands upon thousands of combinations for a single card. It is not viable unless you have some sort of limit on adding sigils

@@titadogelo5090 you are 100% absolutely right, the math would be quite substantial. but there are a few things to keep in mind: you cant actually have repeat sigils visible on the card. if a card has the same sigil more than once, it usually has no effect and is not visible anyway, with only a few exceptions, such as totems which sometimes will give a visible repeat sigil but will also sometimes override the existing sigil, so that helps a ton. and as well, to get the full 5 visible sigils on your card, you have to use the mycologists which are a fairly rare map element already, but to top that off you also have to have been building cards explicitly with the intent of going to the mycologist to fuse them. also, because certain cards also already have certain sigils, they can never NOT have those sigils, so any combo of sigils on them up to 5 MUST always include those sigils, which also reduces the number of sigil combos those cards can have. so, most of the time the max number of sigils you'll see on a card is 3 or 4, but most commonly will be 2 to 3: up to 2 from a donor depending on the donor with 1 already being on the card donated to, and then a totem. there's definitely more to it than even this that ive said as well, as many cards do not even have a sigil by default and thus it's significantly harder to get the max 5 on them. so as you can see, realistically, there is actually a lot of peculiar rules involved with the game that do reduce the number of sigils cards can have, the combos they can have, which cards can even reach the max 5 sigils, how and why, and so on. there's probably even more than this that i am forgetting about.

You could go with a Mystic Vale-like solution. It WILL take a bit of work for a handmade solution (not more than already shown here though) but if you're looking to make a playable or sellable system that can definitely work. Have a card sleeve for which the width is the width of the cards plus the width of a badge. Have a vertical fused edge at the line separating the card and the badges. Now you can put a card on the right and its attachment and that small column to the left of it (or anywhere really, if you want badge at the top or bottom just make the sleeve a side-loading one and you can fuse a horizontal edge). I feel like it's a really elegant solution for actual play. Read on if you want to make it work in a DIY situation : Now the main alternative I can think of is using premade sleeves. Print (or have printed) the cards in a 57x89mm format (apparently called bridge size). Use 64x89 sleeves and use something to manually add the edge. Time consuming but probably not much more than manually adding magnetic tape or a ferromagnetic layer. Only thing I can think of off the top of my head is a food vacuum sealer machine that usually have an option to just "seal" without emptying the air but if you can find a proper impulse sealer machine for cheap enough that should do the trick all the same (and if long enough you may be able to find some way to line multiple cards and do 3-4 at once per sealing).

the marker one gave me an idea. what if you made some custom stamps that could function as if you drew on the card with marker?

You could do something between the "patches" and "marker" Make custom sigil STAMPS, you can pop them on consistently and wipe off

If you're using sleeves or plastic cards, i.e. the cards are waterproof and non porous you can use pva glue (glue sticks) and then just wash them with cold water.

My concern is always magnets wearing out over time. I know it’ll take awhile. But it still is always in my mind

look at the card game gloom, they use transparent cards to add modifiers, you could sleeve all cards in the decks, you could have each patch as a transparent card, then as you get patches in game you just slide them into the sleeves in front of the card, this also means they wont slide around inside the sleeve. only downside is the cards will get a little thicker with each patch added, so a card with like 3 patches would be thicker than a card with none

I'm not into bakugan for the card game aspect and mostly only like them for the toys, but I can tell you that not all the bakugan cards have a metal sheet in them. Only a specific type of card called Gate cards. And that was part of an old system that was revamped at some point that replaced gate cards with little hexagons called cores. Most cards used in bakugan are normal. Gate cards are special field cards and are only part of a legacy ruleset now. The split lamination method in the video is practically just makeshift card sleeves but I see a lot of discussion about that in the comments already

If you dont care to be 1-1 accurate with the game you can have placeholder cards and have a side deck with your upgraded cards , and when you play the placeholder you would switch the 2 cards . Example Placeholder 1 = Wolf +2 attack with double strike . The placeholders can be just Numbers , blanks were you right the name of the card been switched with . Makes the shuffling fair also .

So weird that I got recommended this video right as I got started working on a similar project, algorithm working wonders. However, I'm planning on 3d printing cards with disc magnets embedded inside. Seperately will be sigil/number/cost tokens, portaits, name plates, and RFID tags, all with slots on the cards for putting them in, making them modular. So far I have the models for a full blank card with the border and back art, today I've ran a few trial prints with mixed results, so right now I'm tweaking things for better quality. Will it be unwieldly and impossible to shuffle? Certainly. Will it be difficult to produce a full set of cards and all the components. Yep. But will it look and feel amazing? Oh yeah. The goal of modularity is to be able to host my own in person "campaigns" like Leshy does for my friends, and I thought the idea of literally placing pieces in your card sounded really immersive. Plus, being able to construct custom cards with new portrait art so easily makes it to where I have full control over the direction of my game. The project has a ton of cons, but overall it's more or less just a bit of experimentation for fun. This video inspired me to keep working on it even more fervently than before. Thank you!!

I should mention the disc magnets' purpose is to hold the tokens/portait/plates to the card, that have a magnet in themselves as well. I couldn't think of a more elegant way to go about it, but your video has me intrigued on rethinking my design choice. If anyone has a better idea, let me know

You really should have a proper alignment cutter, one of the big guillotine blocks. Would definitely straighten out those sigils.

Hey I was just wondering if you have any plans on making printable foldable cards for Kaycee's mod like you did for the other act one cards on your website? I'm trying to make a full set of cards to play with my friends and I really love how you set up the cards and designed them on the PDF and I haven't been able to find printable versions that are as high quality scans as yours to make my own! I also wondered if you'd be interested in doing the other placeholder cards for stuff like the "bone lords blessing", the Waterborne underwater card, and the different "Trial" cards you might get? Was just curious!

If your printed cards are a standard card game size is magic the gathering or Pokemon you might look into using some perfect fit inner sleeves. Like kmx perfect fits or there's another brand that has side loading sleeves.

If a company wanted to make this, make the cards fully metallic and the patches into weak magnets. The cards shouldn't stick together, but if they do, just make the back side of the card have less iron than the front, perhaps by having a thicker cardboard on that side. I do wonder about the durability of metal cards tho, I feel like they'd get more easily scratched than cardboard ones, since they can scratch each other during shuffling.

what if you made stamps for all the sigils with an ink that washes away with water? or maybe even with alcohol ink, so the stamped sigils are more secure to touch and would be cleaned with alcohol instead. itd be more effort at first, but if you play a lot it could mbe very convinient

Rubber stamps for the seals/patches, dry-erase ink, and laminated cards. All the advantages of the dry-erase pen, without having to draw the patches yourself!

I saw the first time you've uploaded the this concept, not sure if it was here on YT or reddit but thought it was really cool. Anyways, if you were to make those metal cards, and then have a shop laminate them, wouldn't that prevent the cuts?

Card sleeves, and have the patches adhere to the sleeve? Even double sleeve? Doesn't ruin the card, can easily swap sleeves if they ruin the sleeve, and depending on how thick they are, hopefully not too much adjustments to the card thiccness itself.

Even so everyone ignored my comment over a year ago. Here is my idea again. Why not use Card sleeves and print the Sigils on Transparent Cards? Just slide in whatever you need. Makes it easier to shuffle and stuff like that.

a good compromise would be to have 3D printed stamps so you can stamp the sigil and erase it

Better yet, make a stencil to shade in the symbol on the laminated cards. Then you don't need to remember how they all look, and it should be cleaner, almost like doing a charcoal rub for indented paper.

Thats why i use card sleeves instead

Just use perfect fit sleeves with the opening on the larger side, like you can get from Dragon Shield and you don't have to waste time and money on laminating. They are about 3-5 Euros for 100 and a way better alternative.

The best option would be having Lazer engraved and inked steel cards which you could technically get wholesale from china

What about a magnetic mat to play upon? Or just metal and use the magnets on the sigil, it will sandwich the card between the play board and the sigil piece. Could be a cool opportunity to make an awesome play board(like yugioh) with spaces for cards in play... or it could be a clunky solution that involves a.. giant metal plate. If the play mat had designated areas for cards you could make just those spots out of metal and the rest of the mat could roll up or fold for storage.
