    Alright I was a little fired up in this video but I hope I don’t come across like a complete asshole. Just because I disagree with some creators on this doesn’t mean I don’t like them or their content (OR DOES IT!?) No, I’m just kidding. Most of them seem great (OR DO THEY!?). No, they do. Matt, stop confusing people. I’m really interested in what you have to say on this topic. What are your thoughts on clickbait, advertising & consumerism as it relates to the message of this video? Btw if you’re struggling to get your voice heard I think you should spend more time on your message… not your volume.

    I couldn't agree with you more, I'm so thankful that you use your platform to speak against this trend. I try to not click the videos with clickbaity titles, but it's difficult. Especially at times where I'm too tired to resist, where "consuming" is really the last thing I should be doing. At the same time, I get why people do it. When everyone around you does it and will drown you out unless you do the same, I get why it can seem like you have no choice. Thank you for showing that there is a choice and that it's not necessary. I hope it becomes "cool" to not be clickbaity and that transparency and honesty combined with great content is the future of online content. Unlikely, but I'll keep on hoping and do my best to "vote" for people like you with my clicks and my likes.

    One of the most frustrating things with click bait on videos (ones which actually have good content I mean) is that the crap titles make specific videos really hard to find again. There are some great music KZread channels for instance where every video is a title like “one simple trick to take your playing to the next level” which means you have to trawl loads of them to find the lesson you actually want to see again!

    Honestly this is a topic that no one has mentioned but this is sooo important. Titles and clickbait like these make people unhappy and think they need something more and more. The sad part is that I don't understand why you are the only one who realized how much it actually affects people subconsciously and how much unhappiness comes from these advertised typed of videos. Thank you for speaking about it and I hope more creator will realize how much it actually affects the audience. Thank you once again!!!

    I agree and I sometimes struggle with this as a creator on youtube. I watch tons of videos on how to grow and develop your channel, and they often advise to use "ethical clickbait" to get more views. But when I see their examples, they don't seem that ethical to me. And I don't feel right using titles like that. So I don't 😊 Of course I'd like to grow my channel and reach more people, but not at the cost of my own voice and message. I wouldn't feel right about it. It's the same reason why I've turned down most sponsorship offers. So to answer your question: yes I agree. The number one reason I'm making videos is to make my viewers feel better, so I'm not going to do anything that contradicts that.

    Oh my goodness! I absolutely love this. As a Philosophy and Psychology major, I am always so interested in challenging the status quo (and what is seen as 'socially correct') and this video reminded me of Matt Haig's Reasons To Stay Alive and obviously his famous statement 'the world is increasingly designed to depress us'. Please continue to produce this type of 'revolt' content and I think that debunking some myths about creatives or what it means to be a creative can be a great way because believe it or not but you guys are in a really tiny box and as much as creatives are supposed to be, well... creative, a lot of ideas are shut down because they are 'not trending', which can be discouraging and I think that you - as a person who does not follow the crowd - would be the best person to hear from. Thank you once more for all that you do and keep on keeping on.

    How dare you tell me what I do or don't need. Of course I need your Patreon content! But you're totally right about improving by doing. I like to think my videography skills have improved over the last year of making videos (and obviously still a far way to go). My camera isn't the best, but if you were using it, you would be making way better videos than I am. The skill is in the person, not in the tools. As we say in racing, if you want to go faster, spend money on the driver mod first (practicing on the race track), not upgrading your car.

    Hello, my name is *HANNAH* and I like using using *CAPS* but not for *EVERY* word. Seriously though, there's so much truth in this. Titling a video is very hard to do and it can be so easy as a creator to just title videos with the most *must click* vibe possible. It's satisfying in the short term to see the views go up but I don't think it's the only way to go (your channel is living proof of that). There can be power in well worded, truthful titles and they'll almost stand out in how un-BS they seem. Thanks for helping me double guess my titles and think a little more about how they'll make the audience feel in a world that's already heavy with advertisement.

  • @LizaBro1
    @LizaBro15 жыл бұрын

    Well, this topic caused me confusion. From the one hand, KZreadrs use such titles to attract their audience and this works because the majority of their subscribers are really falling for that. For the other hand, I understand that this may be not very honest, but it's very productive. I am sure that you won't watch the video, if you're not interested in the topic, but you'll push the 'play' buttom, if you're keen on the KZreadr or you like the subject of the video, whatever the headline is. Sorry for the grammar mistakes c:

    I feel like not turning on ads is wasted, theres content creators such as Lisa Eldridge who solely keep advertisements on for the purpose of donating the revenue. As this is a platform that thrives on advertising, I don't think it's a big deal to have ads on videos when it's a huge part of KZreads "culture" and donating the revenue, even if you're not into ads, and keeping your independent platforms; such as a blog, website, your overall personal content; ad free.

    Try watching a video on what a good fit about clothes is and you'll have your answer even if you can't get the exact same brand and/or model :) Personally i love Tencel as a material and the fit + durability is amazing ;) Went from owning 10 "crappy" shirts to a single one that i just love xD Try it for a mind set, hope it helps :)

    I think you've lost your damned mind. Haha. Titling is part of the competition for peoples attention. On the spectrum of creators you've got the simple and minimalist vision, and theres a place for the more mild high-minded creator on the spectrum - a.k.a. - Matt. But YT is saturated and there are 100 talented creators with zero audience for every one with an audience of 10k+. People are trying to shout through the noise, and just being a great creator is not enough. I am a 40 year old dude. Video is a hobby for me, I run a small business - designing and renovating homes, and I sell real estate. My content is something I'm proud of for me, cause I'm just doing it because I love it, but its also because I'm trying to build my own name, and my own personal brand for my RE and design business. I don't know what I'm doing, I don't know how to build an audience, and it a title is a bit clickbaitey but actually points people to something that's well filmed and interesting and relevant, than I'm glad they 'baited' me, or I may not have saw it. I think the bait has to lead to substance for it it to actually work. I think you're real message of this vid is "You don't need any of what you're being told in order to get better, to be more creative, or to grow your audience or increase your skill." But the message muddies for me when you add in your own personal pet peeve of 'clickbait' titles. Peter McKinnon, Casey Neistat, and others use those techniques. But then the viewer is rewarded with excellent story telling and awesome information. Anyways Matt, love what you do, and I've considered Patreoning just for your vlog too. Keep doing you bro, but let others do them.

    Yeah, I totally get that. I think the truest test of character is what's in the actual content. If you're peddling products for affiliate sales or selling things you don't believe in, that's a much bigger problem. I guess you could see the sensational titles as just "playing the game". But if everyone is yelling and screaming for attention it might be more effective to just focus on the content and create an interesting (not sensational) title. Maybe in the short-term it's not the best strategy... but in the long run great content will stand out. Thanks for respectfully disagreeing with me. I appreciate your POV.

    I don't know if you remember, but years ago Sinead O'Conner burned a picture of the pope while playing SNL. She got tons of blowback for it. Afterwards she said, "People don't always listen when you scream in their faces, sometimes just a whisper in the ear is enough." The clarity of your message on YT and the way you go about it is that whisper. What I do hate is a bait and switch, and I see THAT tactic used a lot. "The ONE thing EVERY WEDDING PHOTOG must do RIGHT NOW" - then 30 seconds in the vid is like "there's a lot of things that you can do in your business, but you might find this helpful." Its like, no. You made the claim, now back it up, and it better be good. :)
