You don't need a scale to measure your acrylic pour paint!

I always recommend new acrylic pour artists measure they paint with a kitchen scale. This ensures you are mixing your paints the same way every time and will produce more consistent results.
This isn't always an options though. If you don't have a scale at home here are 4 ways you can mix your acrylic paint. I've listed them in the order of the least effective to the most effective, at least in my opinion.

I still remember the job interview I had way back in the early 90s for my first job in a biology research lab. One of the questions was asking how I would measure a particular volume of water without a measuring cylinder. I was so pleased my brain instantly thought "weight it". I also remembered what the density of water was too, which for a very nervous 18 yr old was pretty surprising! I actually prefer to weigh my paint (always in grams) because I find it hard to get an accurate volume reading when you're working with thick paints. Scales cost so little to buy and it's totally worth it. Also, I was a little disappointed that you had a regular T-shirt today because I couldn't see the text, then I saw what it said and it made me very happy 😂

YAY Saturday! (Oh no, the boss didn't go out! I'll have to wait until I get home :( ) I've measured as you do, markings on the side of the cup. Clear cups with no foot on the bottom - I just put my mixing cup inside the cup that's marked. Those are super-thin cheap dollar store cups, and doubling them makes them more sturdy to pour, so I win twice. You taught this well. Thank you! I do use a scale for mixing mediums, since the liquids weigh different amounts. I try to be consistent so that each time I make the medium it comes out the same - if I switch from weight to volume, I'm going to get a different consistency.

I'm a REALLY tactile person and I find that it's quite easy to feel the viscosity. My medium is quite thin so I can usually get it to the right viscosity by straight paint + medium alone for the right consistency. However having also recently been loving using pigments and micas over plain acrylic, adding minwax to the mix, as well as how strongly the powders are pigmented, have made it more of a testing ground at my house. The last month or so has been trying to get the right viscosity for a multi step/style painting I'm working on for my god daughter for each pour type and switching to pigments has probably been the biggest part of that process. But I also do very much love the silicone pour cups as well. But I only have 3 atm so I have to mix, transfer to another vessel and then clean the cup so IDK why it never occurred to me to buy more. It's just so much easier to let the paint dry and then just wipe it out so more just seems like a no brainer my brain didn't brain yet. Thanks!! I need that T for my hubby. And my eldest lol.

Just responded to the other comment you left on the how much paint video but going to paste it here too in case other people are curious. This is tricky because every technique is going to be different. For dutch pours I use about 60% on the base and 40% on the top colors. I also use WAY less paint becuase I am not expecting overspill like you see on other techniques. For a regular technique like a flip cup or a straight/ring pour I use about 30% on the base and 70% on the pour.

Keep at it! Like David says, at some point it will just click for you, it really will. Also, I do flow tests on paper (actually laminated the third one and simply noted the flow difference on the other side) which has helped tremendously. Once you get to a consistency that you like, mix up bigger batches of the colors you use more often and store them in a jar or condiment squeeze bottle, etc. I felt your same frustration almost to the point of thinking I was never going to "get it" and then bling, just like David said, at some point it will just click. Take notes! There is so much to learn in this art form but I just keep reminding myself that every art form has a learning curve this is just the form that you have to learn the science more than, say, oil painting. Happy Pouring!!

I have yet to get started, still gathering the last of my supplies (I think Saturday is the last delivery). I've been wondering and hopefully you can answer this (I'm sure you can). I bought some heavy body paints, I have the Floetrol (US) and I even bought the GAC 800 to mix in to avoid any of the problems it fixes (sorry brain fart here, cannot recall the terms). That said, while I'm unsure of the ratio I should use with the Floetrol/GAC 800 mix, I'm wondering if I can mix up the three ingredients in advance (paint+2mediums) and put them in those bottles (like the ketchup bottle type on your table there). I bought a bunch of those bottles because I figured I'd be wanting to mix some paints to get many more colors. The question (after this babble) is, if I have effectively pour-ready acrylic paint (like you can buy except homemade), how long will it last--especially since I'm mixing two mediums? And if it has a fairly long shelf life in those bottles ready to go, can I/should I shake the bottle before pouring them out (like I see folks do)? The reason I ask that is everyone is saying not to shake up GAC 800 just before you use it. I'm wondering if that applies if it's mixed with Floetrol and the paint already. And bc I'm a creature like you--math exactness (retired CPA), I'll be using a scale to measure to ensure I always get the same results. I'm thinking I best try my formulas out first before I commit a bunch of paint to them but write down the ratios in case they're successful, right! Thanks in advance, sorry so long!

Months if you use distilled water. Weeks if you use filtered, and a week or two if you use tap water. Those are all conservative and depending on your location (high mountains or desert will last longer, high humidity with lots of bugs in the air it will last less). yes, mix some paint ge the consistency you want THEN put your paint in bottles or mix your paint in bottles.

I can't say 100% as I haven't done all the testing I would need to give an "exact" answer. My thoughts right now are that you need about a fingernail scoop per ounce of paint. Then add for color depth. These are almost always going to be more transparent then regular paint.

  • @LeftBrainedArtist

    @LeftBrainedArtist

    2 жыл бұрын

Letting it sit is definitely an option but it will take a while to dry. I rinse my cup in a container with water I leave on my table. I use that for a few weeks then either let it evaporate dry outside or use the Golden Paint method to remove all the paint so it doesn't get in the water system. If your garbage is open where it gets some air and you don't get holes in your bags you can just dump that last little ounce out in to the garbage. It will actually dry faster all spread out like that.

Lots of people have used the little white turntable to great success. You could add a wooden board on top to give it some heft too. Nothing too thick. That way your canvas has something easier to lay on too.

What is this word “measure” that you keep saying? LOL 😂 I’m just measuring how much fun I’m having while painting. 😱 I do think it’s awesome to know all this tech stuff and I enjoy your vids David! Even if I am not technically measuring! 😍

🌿💜 Thank you! You always come through with good Info . We have exchanged messages before. I'm new, but haven't started yet. I do have my scale now. You gave me a good idea. The bottle you use for h20, I'm going to mark it and mix the paint in the squeeze bottles. I will mix about 5 colors & see how I like it. Mix it up a day before so if decide to shake it I can let it settle. I have a torch for bubbles. Treat it like cake batter. 🤣 Have you heard of people who put a marble into the squeeze bottle after the paint is mixed ? I might try 1. I'd have to weigh the marble. By the way what is your name? What do you think of my idea ? Thanks 🌿💜🌿

My name is David Rita. You can put a marble in but that really would only help if you leave the paint in long term (months). Otherwise a good shake is sufficient.

Dont you think it would be so much easier if everything in the world was made of silicone? lol. Just seems like things are headed in that direction. So what about storing the mixtures that are made in these silicone cups as they dont come with lids? Do you transfer the leftover's into different cups with lids or how do you seal these? Great topic and something I have been struggling to figure out as well when buying my supplies. So as far as the scale,is a small one sufficient or do I need a larger one to measure 2 batches of pm for the bloom as I see many doing in videos? Thx David

Wouldn't it ever BB? Just let it dry and peel it off. I have bottles that I transfer my highly used paint in to. Generally because I pour and experiment a lot I only make small batches at a time.

Oh I don’t do it right… I do if I feel I know I want one part paint and then to part medium and then the rest is water and then if I put in a cell activator I do all that I feel I can tell by the paint when it thick and then the thin paints and then the paints that are actually made for this type of medium pouring paints… But I always make enough paint to do at least three canvases and then I try 3 Different Way I like doing the flip cup that’s my favorite I’ll do a tree ring and I’m still trying to get the hairdryer… This week I got a torch warning here … Long hair and a torch not a good idea LOL there’s some things I always do I make sure I’m sleeveless are usually remember to put my hair up … I actually pick out my paints the night before I have everything put together I will mix my paints the day that I’m going to use them and I don’t use rubber gloves at this point I need to feel And for some reason wearing rubber gloves doesn’t give me an accurate feel… Know what I find interesting is all three canvases come out completely different i’m still not getting cells like I should be I’m not getting any lacing I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again this is the hardest medium I’ve ever had to work with… Oh and I got my cement plastic container this week getting ready for the cooler weather and I’ll be back out in the garage which my kitchen will be very happy about✌️✌️🤟

As always very helpful info. But have a question. Can you measure all your paints say 20 different colours and store them and when ready to paint just use them? If so how long will it be okay to store like in a plastic bottles? I know you will have to stir add maybe more water etc.

If they are in a sealed container that depends on the water you use. 2 weeks for tap water, 4 weeks for filtered water, and 8 weeks for distilled water are the guidelines I go by Janet.

  • @LeftBrainedArtist

You can't 100% replicate anything with pouring. There are just too many variables. But just like with any other art form you use inspiration from what others have done, color palettes, techniques, ratios, etc to get something similar.

Ratios are the key but know how much to make if you are making only enough paint for one painting and don't want leftovers the actual total weight/volume is important too.
