    I think it depends, both can be amazing for what you play, either way I’m happy, but I’m simple minded, so seven I can just about manage haha keep doing amazing stuff Pete! :)

    Down tune a baritone 6 string. Only so I don't have to think too hard about scales.

    I write music far better on a down tuned 6 string. Whether that's from familiarity or personal taste I'm unsure.

    I mean, the whole point of mixing 8 string guitars is to be in the same note range but totally different frequency field as the bass.

    @@k4shey Most djent music is nothing special. This at least had some musicality. That's what makes Pete a great player is his ability to serve a song even though he can play just as well as many other more flashy players.

    Soooo, how I normally play my 6-String in Drop A then? That was sick. I'd like to retrofit with a 7-8 String set one day, just to get lower without switching to my bass.

    What scale length is your guitar? Switching to an 8 string set would probably need some modifications to the guitar. :)

    I'm really glad i just got my first 8 string guitar. That is one string that isn't on it. I went one up and one down then tuned down 1 full stop. So my low and high is A and G. Love it! I'm thinking of making this guitar fretless like my other ones. :)

    @@peteplaysmusic Lol aye, I should. Its one of those things I keep meaning to do, but always wind up spending my money elsewhere. Its not even a hard project either. Especially since you can buy single string headless bridges for pretty cheap on ebay. Way better than most djent sticks that have some diy monstrosity for a bridge going onto an awkward looking single machine head. Headless is the way imo.

    So even on a 6 string I never play in standard tuning, so I got into the baritone market and grabbed a super cheap OLP (Sterling basically) MM5, which is a 6 string 29.75" scale baritone, and I sold my Kiesel 8 string because I just stopped playing it lol. Baritone is life. You don't need that many strings if you're really gonna go for the CHUG.

    I think 8 strings are just better overall, you get a lot more notes without needing to tune down I could play in 6 string standard tuning ignoring the 7 and 8th strings and play it normally but obviously you have two extra strings it’s just so nice

    For heavy riffage, baritone guitars can be easily set up to 8 string lower range with much slimmer neck and if some cases even better string tension. Not as versatile for lead playing tho, but depends on what your role in the band is... IF you are in a band and IF you have chops for lead playing.

    I guess it’s more about what you do with the lower tuning than how you get the lower tuning, it’s all personal preference really :)

    You don’t need 8 string guitar - as long as You make adjustments to the nut to accomodate the lowest string from the 8 string set… cool story. Great tone btw :D

    I’ve seen talk of necks warping and going out of shape before but I’ve never once seen it or experienced it and I think there’s a lot of misunderstanding about the topic. In general, necks will be fine without strings/tension providing they aren’t damaged etc :)

    I did but, there are no rules really. 7 strings is the sweet spot for me but for many its a baritone or a 9 or even a 6 or 1 string. It's all personal preference :)

    @@peteplaysmusic They are, just not as spoken about. Though its probably because they were basically the only affordable multiscale back then. Now they have a fair bit of competition.

    @@peteplaysmusic Yeah, they're still around, but they slowed their activities quite a lot since covid started. There are more and more extended range guitar brands now, so I suppose that's why not many people talk about them anymore.

    It was still kinda tricky on 1 string. Bends behind the nut but also bending the 24th fret, it gets kinda crazy haha! :)

    You don't need a 6 string because I've seen people do well on 5 string guitars and electric banjos

    Yep, a lot of 8 string bands actually use pitch shifting FX too so they can get even higher/lower too :)
