Postal districting has a big influence on people’s perceptions. When the London postal area was set up, it covered almost all of the then London County Council area (the only significant exception being Downham at the Bromley end of Lewisham). Plus a whole lot more. Then the Greater London area leapfrogged over the London postal districts, to include many areas that didn’t have London in their postal address. These areas have always seemed a bit left out of London as a result, especially those that were formerly in Middlesex, a county that no longer exists. Incidentally, there’s one small part of the London postal area - the northern tip of E4 (Chingford) that isn’t within the Greater London administrative area and is still in Essex. I wonder if local residents feel they are part of London but actually are not?

I’ve worked in Bellevue for 2 years while living in Seattle but in my mind everything was just Seattle. I think this perspective also comes from where you were raised. If you were born and raised in the Seattle area you’re going to be way more likely to subdivide it, whereas if you often traveled hours to get to Seattle then the entire urban area is Seattle.

Most American cities are carved up into a collection of cities and towns. Most of the time, only a small percentage of the total population of a "city" actually live in the core city. I live in Miami Beach, and the way it works here is that there's both a county mayor and structure for all of Miami-Dade County and an individual structure for each municipality within Miami-Dade. Some things are run at the county level and other things are run at the city level. In the end, This is true for many US cities and counties, though I think MIamiDade is a bit more robust at the county level. We vote in both our individual cities and in Miami-Dade County elections.

Yes, they do float. Yes, they all did sink at one time or another (including the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in Tacoma). If large boat traffic need to get by, the bridges do open up by sliding open. However, many people don't understand that, and refer to those places as "near" Milton Keynes, even though they're officially a part of the city. A lot of US cities have expanded to fill up their county, but other towns in the county still remain as holes in the city. So any small towns are often able to avoid incorporation, even in a lot of the city-counties. It lets them choose whether they want the trade-offs of consolidation.

You mentioned Greater Manchester. I grew up in Stockport and here is an interesting fact about the area. Stockport was originally in Cheshire, but in the 1970s local government reorganisation, it became part of the new county of Greater Manchester, along with Bolton and many other towns surrounding Manchester. However, the Post Office decided they didn't want to change, and so Stockport is still postally in Cheshire. If you live in Stockport then your address is "(house number)(street), Stockport, CHESHIRE". This causes an enormous amount of confusion to people unfamiliar with the area, because they look at a map and they can see that Stockport is in Greater Manchester, _not_ Cheshire, so they cannot understand why you gave your address as "Stockport, Cheshire".

The city limits of Boston are pretty compact--and most of it consists of the former "streetcar suburbs" to the south and west; the actual downtown is amazingly small. But the metro area is most of the eastern third of Massachusetts, and arguably extends into New Hampshire and Rhode Island. One thing that does make New England a bit different is that the towns and cities cover the entire land area of the state, so everyone is in one: I'm in Haverhill, for instance. Where I grew up in Virginia there was a lot of unincorporated land and many "towns" were not formally towns, but that's not the case here. That little neck in the Allston-Brighton area is because the Town of Brookline maintains a determinedly independent identity, cutting a wedge out of the city of Boston.

Germany is an interesting case study, there's been tons of consolidation resulting in towns that take up massive geographic areas. Places like Sinsheim that are really six disconnected, formerly independent towns combined into one. Or Bochum, which absorbed Wattenscheid in the 1970s. Fans of the football club in Wattenscheid don't consider games against Bochum to be a true city derby because they don't consider themselves part of Bochum. I guess the consolidation happens to avoid bureaucratic redunancy but I've yet to see a great explanation for it in Germany.

Look at Australia or China some Cities are gigantic. That's how even smaller cities have 7million inhabitants, because the city limits are as big as states somewhere else.

In my country, we have class A, B and C municipalities. Cities are class A, rural areas have Class B municipalities with every town and village inside that being a class C municipality. Class A municipalities have all the powers that the national or provincial government doesn't use themselves, and class B and C share the powers that class A municipalities have between themselves depending on size and budgets. Class B also tends to be physically huge in sparsely populated areas just so that they can have enough towns and villages to have enough budget to be practical. Whenever a class A municipality gobbles up a class C municipality, that class C gets downgraded to a suburb, which doesn't get a mayor anymore, but does get a seat on the city council.

I live in a place with about 10k inhabitants that is part of a 600k city since 1939. The part I lived before has been part of the same city since 1902 and is first mentioned since 1226. Another quarter of the same city district is known since 1230 and yet another since 1339. All of them used to be independent villages before integrated into the city. All of them still have their old centers and townhalls.

I live in a weird area. It used to be apart of Lisburn City Council, in which it was a village even though there was nothing separating from the neighbouring city of Belfast. In 2014, it was transferred to Belfast City Council. The council never said whether or not it was still a village. And no one knows if it is or not. So I'm short I have no idea where I live

100% agree with you on your end-of-video rant about Florida. It's too hot for most of the year. Only suitable for human inhabitation in the winter. The rest of the time, it's a lot better to be up North.

That's why I say that my house is "outside of Buffalo, NY" - everyone outside of the Buffalo area has never heard of the City of Lockport, NY. What's interesting is that some people I've talked to know where Niagara Falls, NY is, but not Buffalo, even though they're the same metro area, and Niagara Falls is a much smaller city

Friends live in Hawaii where most homes have no heat, few have AC, insulation is rare, and [Wiki shows] daytime temp is 79° - 90°F, with rainfall of 8-30 inches a year. You can live upslope to get cooler areas, or move around to opposite side of an island to get more or less rainfall. Plus, no one says you live on a different island you do. I bet.

While we're on the subject of Hawaii, I think it's worth mentioning that the entire island of Oahu is legally part of the city of Honolulu, even if most maps only show the southeast part of the island as belonging to the city. In actuality it's a consolidated city-county government.

I grew up in New Jersey, about an hour away from NYC. I then went to university outside Boston. I observed at that time that when I (and assumed others) thought about NYC, I thought about Manhattan, a subset of NYC, but when I thought about Boston, I thought about an area larger than Boston (i.e., the "greater Boston area." It didn't occur to me at the time that my observation wasn't very original.

A good example of this is in South Yorkshire "Aston-cum-aughton" believes itself to be a Sheffield village but is administered by Rotherham Dearne valley is even more complicated Mexborough, Wath, Bolton and Swinton are all a weird mix of Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster - Wath and Bolton believe themselves to be Barnsley, Mexborough and Swinton believe themselves to be Rotherham, all 4 have Rotherham postcode, Swinton is considered a part of Mexborough but under Rotherham administration, Mexborough is under Doncaster administration, Wath is under Rotherham administration and Bolton is under Barnsley adminstration. All 4 are 20-40 minutes walk away from each other. All 4 share a place called manvers which has a business park and a lake in it. Some people from Mexborough, Bolton and Swinton don't know where Wath is despite the fact that manvers is literally in Wath. I don't know why Yorkshire has to be so confusing but it's quite interesting to learn about.
