You Don’t Have to be a Scientist to Cure Cancer | Karen Holman | TEDxSalem

Karen, whose specialty is in metals, shares about the discovery of metal-based anti-cancer drugs. She hopes to make the science behind this discovery approachable for audiences of all backgrounds, to learn about the barriers medical science face in becoming accessible to patients, and become energized about scientific discovery and innovation.
Interpretation for TEDxSalem 2017 was provided by student interns through a collaboration between Western Oregon University, TEDxSalem, and the Deaf and interpreting communities of Oregon. The volunteer student interpreters were supported by volunteer, certified interpreters in order to minimize potential errors. Your support of these pre-professional interpreters’ growing skills is appreciated.
Karen Holman is a punk rocker, radio DJ, a researcher and chemistry professor at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. She lives deeply in all those identities.

That was a very interesting talk and I'm as enthusiastic about Ru as Mrs. Holman. I have a suggestion: Overseas, like Mexico and possibly India, and maybe other countries allow experimental therapies, so why not treat people in Tijuana or Delhi and bypass the US altogether? I also think that a plant based diet with highly nutritious leafy greens, beans etc (a vegan diet) may well head off cancers to begin with. Some long term vegetarian population studies seem to indicate increased longevity. While the FDA is dallying, you can change your diet.

  • @karenmcfarlaneholman

Brian, I completely agree that a whole-foods and plant-based diet improves overall health and can help prevent ailments! As for other countries studying Ru-based drugs, interestingly most of the research started in Europe (Austria and Italy specifically) about 20 years ago and the leaders in the field are still from non-U.S. scientists. When I started researching these drugs 18 years ago, I was one of the only U.S.-based professors doing so. Fortunately there are many more now, but still no clinical trials in the U.S. yet (to my knowledge - I'd love to be wrong on that). The first clinical trials were in Europe and progress remains slow, alas.

U of Washington researchers called artemisinin a magic bullet against cancer. It fools iron transport, and as artemisinin builds up in the cancer cell, it is killed by a free radical buildup. Years ago I read that they were working to improve the already good selectivity of which cells it killed. I hope you will look at it. Artemisinin can be bought over the counter and is approved as part of the malaria treatments.

And it really doesn't mean anything anymore if it's time for everybody to be right with God and they should have been this whole time. You may not like what I say but I know what God has shown me and this is all about to come to an end soon. So in a way this is a waysted topic.

Bill, thanks for writing about Artemisinin! Indeed there are many fantastic plant-derived molecules that are very effective for many things. Because my research specialty is metals, and metal-based drugs are very rare, I chose to speak about my expertise, and hopefully teach a bit of something new to people. But I do like learning about carbon-based treatments such as artemisinin so thank you for posting about it here.

Ruth Butler Not that old chestnut again! The body needs iron, but we don't eat nails! Iron tonics combine the iron atoms into molecules that the body can use. A drug company can incorporate an element into a molecule, and design the molecule so that it delivers the element more effectively into the body. Or it can take a therapeutic molecule from a plant, and tweak it to make a more effective, and patentable, molecule. There are plenty of drugs which are derived from naturally occurring molecules: ACE inhibitors (derived from snake venom), Aspirin (willow bark), Digoxin (foxgloves), antibiotics (mostly from moulds and fungi). Even cannabis can be patented! A UK company holds the patent on Sativex, a drug derived from Cannabis. So please, no more spreading of this false meme.

Cancer patients are regularly recruited on clinical trials. However, just because someone is dying, it doesn't mean that a researcher should give them something of unknown toxicity and safety. If one only has 6 months left, then those 6 months are precious, and few would be willing to take something of unproven toxicity which might take away some of those months.

Hello Rich and thank you for your question! To clarify: I was actually talking about how successful the platinum-based drug Cisplatin has been for decades. Testicular cancer indeed, as you point out, is now easy to treat, but it wasn't before Cisplatin. The connection with ruthenium is that it is also a metal, and could perhaps work for other types of cancer. There is evidence for one of the ruthenium drugs working for metastatic cancer more effectively than platinum drugs.

Yes, Testicular cancer is easy to beat, because of platinum-based drugs, as explained in this talk, 100% consistent with what you are saying. The history of showing 90 percent died was all before 1970, before platinum drugs, showing that metal-based drugs can be very effective. Then, after using Platinum as an example, the talk went on to talk about another metal that is also promising: Ruthenium.
