Properly securing your kayak to your roof rack not only protects your kayak but those who share the road with you.

The twisting of the straps is a fantastic tip. I hadn't thought of that. I don't put my kayak on my roof, but in a small kayak trailer, but still I think this applies. Thanks!

In the trades they tell you not to have any twists in the lay (dealing with heavy loads) so it is good you guys point out this is a different scenario.

Tie a slip knot behind the buckle to prevent it from possibility coming loose. Then tie a half hitch over the slip knot to keep it from slipping out until you're ready to undo it. This also takes care of some of the extra tag line hanging off.

I use the same hook/ratchet combo. One thing I suggest is tying the yak bow line to the front line below the hook mechanism loosely with the hook providing the tiedown pressure. The way I see it, the bow/stern ties are there as a backup incase of main strap or rack failure. Those hooks won't hold onto much if they're just looped on.

Only put 1 twist in the straps, every twist past the first one lowers the strength rating. They are made to have 1 twist added. SOURCE: TRUST ME BRO. Also I'm trained in rigging

Just quit going ham on the ratchet. Why is that so hard for kayakers to understand. I’m convinced everyone is selling their own cam straps or something.

How do you keep your kayak seat folded? I usually put it in the vehicle if it's a longer drive. Otherwise I just use a bungee cord.

@@spiltmilt ooh i gotta disagree here. 8ft bed with a canopy so rods either go on top in the ski rack or in the back of the bed. I also have a 4 runner and theres no way rod storage is better in a SUV or cross over. Modern trucks are getting 20-25 mpg, some even in the 30s, plus a way higher range due to tank capacity. For me it's trucks all day.
