You Could Be MUCH More Persuasive: Dilbert Creator Scott Adams

We all make stupid arguments all the time. But we can get better. If we take the right steps. So I read Scott Adams new book and invited him on the podcast to talk about “Loserthink.” Loserthink is any kind of argument that’s baseless or lacking evidence.

    This is a high-quality interview. Mr. Altucher is a good interviewer because he actually read the books, he engages with the ideas, he asks good questions, and he doesn't waste time pontificating about himself. I listen to Scott Adams's podcast regularly, and he shined here. Great chemistry, you two.

    0:52:10 kinda surprised Scott missed a quality trick: does the addition of each molecule of co2 have a linear warming effect. My (albeit amateur) understanding us that you quickly reach saturation.

    @@xaptronic That may be true, but they also do censor thumbnails on several political channels I follow. They never seem to do it for non-political channels. And it's typically for right-leaning channels, although I have seen them do it on left-wing political channels as well.

  • @xaptronic

    @@nathanh6102 I have never seen that. Are you technically saavy? How would you know if there was a problem loading the thumbnail or maybe the political channels mess around with the thumbnail, again, to propagate the notion that their content is dangerous etc etc

  • @nathanh6102

    @nathanh6102

    @@xaptronic Yes, I am very technically saavy. And I probably spend at least 6 hours/day on KZread. I've seen it happen (regularly) to a channel that only uses screencaps of himself (like Scott, but a different channel) so it's not due to messing with the thumbnail. The most benign explanation I can think of is that use of certain keywords triggers it, or above some percentage of certain keywords, although it's hard to tell exactly what those are, as many of the videos seem rather benign, without any obvious trigger. Oftentimes the thumbnail does appear after a while (~30 min - 2 hours), so it may be a situation where some sort of manual thumbnail review is triggered, but I really am just guessing at why it might happen, all I know is that it does.

    Scott is great, but he needs to put a spotlight on the core of what Scott did: persuasion AND a good product. He talks about persuasion but not about the hard work, ethics, and humanism he applied to make things that he thinks people want - not just persuade people to buy things they’d never want to buy. I know a lot of people applying the persuasion with no awareness of the other half. Maybe that’s because the other half is hard news. And nobody gets a large fanbase with bummer-books I guess.

    Alex Pilon - not exactly. Scott has taken the emphasis on persuasive talent and put it all there when discussing Trump. Most people want to be persuasive and helpful, not just talented at making others buy what you yourself wouldn’t buy. Hence my comment.

    Scott’s U tube ,twitter and any social media that Scott try’s to make a mark in is Scott’s attempt to validate his existence . It’s older people do when you don’t have kids to carry on your DNA. And keep the chain going . He’s the last link and on his way to being no more.

    "solar panels are doubling in effeciency every two years or whenever" recently they were 20%; over 25 years. as a general rule, you probably wont see doubling things about physical phenomena. 1,2,4,8,16,32,64,128 0,1,2,3, 4, 5, 6, 7 efficiency is always out of 100%, so unless a fundamentally new way of doing something is discovered, you will never get >100% efficiency. "my solar panels paid for themselves over 4 or 5 years" that is the result of government kickbacks. most solar panels are priced the same grid electricity over the expected life of the panel, which iirc is 14 to 16 years. you may understand finance adequately, but not economics. "health care may be transformed" see that is the kind of good idea i listen to hear, but the more you mix in stuff you don't understand the more you self discredit.

    "why would obama buy a beach front property?" a private island with highest point 3 feet above water. completely different from a beach front. and the purchase was made during hurricane season at normal market price. "well why wouldn't rising sea level rise everywhere" "temperature" eh, no. it would rise most places, but there is a difference between sea level and ocean level. the mediteranian is lower in elevation of water, because more water evaporates out of the area than pours in from rivers. this causes the conection with the ocean to flow from the ocean whereas most rivers flow into the ocean. the ocean and seas do change in volume from temperature, but that isn't near the amount of swell of the moon passing overhead. more importantly the complaint is not about rising sea levels, but buying housing in a location which is expected to imminently flood. your presentation is a straw-man. the criticism has to do with entirely different variables.
