Diagnostic Ultrasound Shows Preferential Activation of Rectus Abdominis Segments with Exercises Targeting Upper Versus Lower Segments - PMC
There’s been a long-time controversy regarding whether you can preferentially train the lower abs over the upper abdominals. They’re one muscle that runs vertically along your midsection, separated by horizontal tendinous inscriptions.
They recently did a study using crunches, sit-ups, and leg raises to test muscle contraction and activation using ultrasound. They put sensors on the abs between each tendinous separation, breaking the abdominals into 4 sections.
They found that a crunch preferentially biased the upper abdominal block over the other 3 segments. A crunch is initiated at the upper abs.
Sit-ups and leg raises hit the upper abs the least, with leg raises favouring the bottom section and sit-ups actually hitting the second row from the top the most. Both sit-ups and leg raises initiate the moment at the hips.
The takeaway here is that it’s beneficial to work a muscle, including the abs, with different exercises from a variety of different angles.
