I think the art of letting go is a delicate one. Making a mistake about clearing out items is our biggest fear. No one wants to face regret when it comes to sentimental items, photographs and collectables that may not be able to be replaced. My husband and I are clearing the garage. Although it is in much better shape now, we are still undecided about some of our things. I think it's simply a part of the process to go through that "I'm not sure yet" stage. You know what....it's ok.

I love to declutter. I find having too much stuff, very stressful! Also, my kids don’t want any of it and I don’t want them to have to get rid of it after I’m gone in 20 or 30 years!

Less is more, right! Hate to think of all the time I’ve spent cleaning, sorting, organizing, storing, and moving our stuff. It’s overwhelming when you look back. I wish my older self could have spoken to my younger buying self! I think that it’s great that so many younger people are looking seriously at tiny living, minimalism, capsule wardrobes, etc. I agree that the pandemic had created a byproduct of lifestyle and excess re-evaluation, too. I do love changing small decor and with charity shops reopening I’m back to what I began a few years ago. I buy a few, usually $1 to $10 items I really love, but when I want to add something new, like navy accents this year, I donate the old purchases back to the same shop. No more packing away the old stuff! It satisfies my choice to freshen and change things up a bit. Also love shopping from my own home by switching out vases, colored candles, faux plants , etc to new locations. Love your topics and length of videos!

You have shared some excellent tips here. De-cluttering and downsizing begins in the mind and heart. When a person is ready to let go, they feel they can take action. Less stuff means less maintenance, life is lighter without possessions that do not serve a purpose but only burden us. Thank you :-)

It's really hard work. You can do it! Be cheered that the longer it takes (took me @ 14 yrs with 3 kids that were into decluttering and a-- resistant husband--), the less likely to return to the old, crammed up lifestyle. My husband really likes the results.. I tried lots of approaches over the 14 yrs. Ex: for a year Tuesday mornings I decluttered clothes, bedding for 1 hour. I did Marie Kondo, Swedish death cleaning, cleaning one drawer at a time, decluttering by room, envisioning the space, re-finishing the floors-- refinishing the floors really got us to a good place. All methods had their use, at different times. We have changed, sold the house, gave away 3-4 rooms of furniture, and not returning, have no interest in returning, to the old lifestyle. Our oldest is definitely a minimalist. He saw the value, once he let go of his 600 comic books...:)

My coworker, Mr. Hoshino, would take pictures of every gift, card and photo that was given to him while he was at our company on an exchange program. It was the seventies, before we had digital photography. This rather amused me at the time, but now I see that he was 'remembering' everything. It is so much easier for us now! I love the scarf that he gave me, but it is not my color and I never wear it, so I am going to try photographing it so that I can keep the treasure, yet pass it on.

I have been photographing things I want to remember too. My 96 year old mom just passed and I photographed her home so I would remember the details of each room. I’m also downsizing at the same time in my home. A lot of emotions and physical work, but I keep on it.

My husband passed away 22 mos ago. He didn’t want to get rid of many things, so after he was gone, my grown children and grandchildren spent 2 weeks, while they were here for his memorial service, helping me throw out tons of stuff, get things put on consignment, and deal with endless things. I was so ready as all of the stuff had been weighing me down and I felt overwhelmed from all the things that I didn’t have the strength to clean or take care of. Back at Christmas time, my older son, d-i-l, and I found a beautiful house that was perfect for them which also had a darling granny flat on the property. I loved it and decided it was time to completely downsize by clearing out my house, doing lots of renovations and make my house ready for selling. After 6 mos we are just finishing the project this week. Our hope is that I can majorly help my son and his family purchase a nice home on a property that also has a guest house for me. I don’t have the motivation to clean and cook and care for a home. I’ll be very happy with a lovely little cottage with a fenced in yard for my doggies, and a little pretty garden. I really don’t want to live in a place where I don’t know anyone. I love family and so we are praying that the Lord will send a good strong buyer for my newly renovated house, and provide $$ so we can have something special together. You are so correct, my cupboards were packed full of so many things from my children’s childhoods. My closets were packed full of clothes I purchased over 30-42 yrs... so I threw away tons and tons. My kitchen was full of pots and pans and dishes and baking equipments of every sort... and I don’t have the strength to do all of those things any more. I cook very simply for myself and I’m content with much less. The tropical garden which my husband had spent endless years creating was beyond what I could keep up with, so my son scheduled tree trimmers to cut things down or thin them way back. He got rid of so many plants and simplified so much. The garden is still lovely, but now we can see the house that was previously hidden due to the jungle of plants. So much stuff everywhere. Yes it’s emotional to let it go, but I thank the Lord for the many blessings, and I pray that He will direct us to the next phase of life. I’m 74 yrs old and don’t want so much to take care of. My garage is full of the things I’m keeping and that seems to be more than enough.

I started letting things go 2 years ago and it has been liberating and eye opening. The nicer things that I spent good money on I have been consigning and feel satisfied with the money I have earned from selling these items. I have also donated bags, and bags, and bags of stuff to charities and continue to do so. When I get the itch to purchase a new household item, I go into my closets and storage areas and usually find something very similar - money saved. One of the fun things about going through the boxes is finding treasures I forgot about like jewelry, or artwork, or a beautiful photograph, so I get the joy of rediscovery.

I used a very basic KonMari type decluttering -- it has worked very well. I had to do it twice, but purging stuff is getting easier. We have to clean up my Dad's stuff, it's all mildewy and ruined, it just can't be kept. But we are keeping some of the beautiful simple treasures that he has aquired. I love the wide open spaces. I've been at this for about 7 years now.

About 10 years ago our house burned down. We did lose a lot of treasures and "stuff". My art studio was gone I lost so much. We had to replace everything!!! Wiring, floors, windows, you get the idea. I need to get rid of clutter , I would do it much differently now. Oh, family, dog and cat all well and accounted for.

I’m on my decluttering journey and everytime I’m able to let go of things I feel so much better. It’s a slow journey but It’s definitely getting easier to let go. I’m planning on keeping the things I love or need and everything else can leave my home. Our donation centres and thrift stores have been closed so I joined a Buy Nothing group for my area on facebook. All you have to do is post photos on the group’s page and hopefully someone will want the items. So far I’ve been very successful so will be happy to continue. When you know the person will come by you just leave the items on your front porch so there’s no contact during these times.😊

I agree Anne. I’m uncomfortable with starkness. I appreciate art, textures of different fabrics, nature’s collectibles and love comfortable bedding . During the summer, vegetables and fruit from the garden are in the kitchen and flowers in most rooms of my home. Organizing, cleaning and minimizing have always been a part of my life ...minimalism is not for me and I’m ok with those who choose a monastic or ashram look to their living environment and believe they can live life more fully without things . I believe we can have balanced lives by feeling blessed, grateful, sharing and relating to others. In our lives we have infinite possibilities to live out dreams we want to experience.

Very helpful, Margaret..thank you! I've moved twice since 2012, but, that first move was the worst. I'd lived in the same house for 25 years; my kids grew up, and left home, from there. It was painful, and although I donated and discarded so much, I still left a few things behind. I had to move pretty much by myself, and it was very emotional. There was a ton of memories there. So, in conclusion, I'll say that less IS more; our kids won't want our "stuff" when we're no longer here. It's a good time now to let go of those things which no longer serve us. Be blessed; stay safe and well! Rosemarie xo

Do a bunch of small projects, rather than overwhelming yourself with a big project like "I'm going to clear out the garage this weekend." Sometimes, I just challenge myself to clean out 1 small drawer, or a shelf, or a corner of a room. I find if I break it down into many small projects I feel motivated by all the small accomplishments.

I have recently been interested in the Death Clearing concept. (This would be a good topic for discussion) There are many horror stories of people having to clear out their parents' homes after they pass. Whatever I can't seem to get rid of, my kids/grandkids will have to deal with.. Why put a more difficult chore then necessary onto them by keeping a lot of unnecessary stuff? I've asked them if there's anything of mine they'd like to have and given it to them right then. I've started looking at my things differently and asking myself the question of 'how much does one person really need?' I've also gotten the 'final' important papers sorted and easy for them to get to.

My kids helped when my husband got sick, but things have been difficult between us since he died. I have to hire someone to help me and I just don't have the money to do that. I definitely want to move out of this house and into a senior living condo but I feel like I am stuck. Every time I go through my husband's things I just sob. He was diagnosed with Esophageal Cancer out of the blue and 3 weeks later he was gone. I haven't been able to come to terms with his death, how can I let things go when I'm still such a mess over his illness and death?

@@javelinaflips-annie5000 Thank you so much. I have put a down payment on a condo and I'm trying to move before my heart surgery on Dec. 17. I will be near my daughter and her family, but I'm having so much trouble letting go of the house where my husband died. I really feel him here with me and I feel like it's going to be the last goodbye. I know that's not the case, but unfortunately that is what I'm feeling.

Im sorry for your loss and want you to know there are grieving fouls you can go to talk about your loss and suffering. This is still a new occurrence to struggle through and hope you find comfort in knowing yes your husband will be with you until you tell him it’s ok to go on. I know you stated that you were going to get surgery in Dec. I do hope you’re receiving help and recovering well. If you could find something to barter with a friend to in exchange for helping you. Also maybe your church would help you so they could take the extra things for those without. I hope this helps. Let us know how you are doing. God Bless You in your journey. May you find strength to rebuild your life again

My wife and I have been going to a lot of estate sales, partly for entertainment. Been seeing many collections, often a huge quantity of objects. I've wondered what they do with all the unsold items, as we often go on the last day of a sale and the homes are still packed. This stuff isn't necessarily garbage, but way more supply than demand. I'm thinking some of these estates were former Ebay dealers, as there is shelving with items stocked like a store, and a large inventory. I personally am on the fence about wanting things and wanting to downsize, given I'm now age 62.

I started downsizing over a year ago. Yes, that seems a long time but I felt that what I was parting/passing on/throwing away had to be thought about. For instance, I still had my wedding dress from my first marriage back in 1973, since then I have been divorced, married and divorced again but am now with the love of my life and approaching our 22nd anniversary. Then after some research, I found a Charity that turns wedding gowns into little outfits for babies born sleeping, so my wedding gown went to them, I know that my own Mother would have been delighted. Once I made that decision, the rest was easy and I am thrilled that we have an empty attic. All further decluttering after that decision was made was really simple. I managed to unearth and dispose of greetings cards at the weekend that had held onto for years. Once you get going, it becomes easier cupboard by cupboard and box by box. One question for anyone is do you keep record cassettes? 👍😀

I turned 70 last month, we have decluttered 3 times from our house to Condo 2000 square feet and then everything in storage for 2 years and now in 1250 square feet Condo, and I wish I could get rid of more it feels so good just to have the things I really love and the other stuff is be gone. I remember bringing everything out when we were downsizing from our house I called our adult kids to either take their stuff and definitely take some of my treasures to there homes, when in they declared Mom why have you been keeping all this junk ?? Ok fair enough they did take there Cabbage Patch dolls and one took the 100-year-old Spinning Wheel from the family in Finland I was grateful for that . Less is better for me now but it was definitely a process.

I recently retired a little over 3 months ago. Initially I was busy with family stuff but now there is time to stop and reflect, purge and declutter. I find that I am having difficulty getting rid of supplies I collected while I was a Speech Pathologist for 40+ years. I guess I need to go through the process of finding my other self and not my working self before I can let go of these items. I’m sure it will take a while but I’m impatient. Any advice would be appreciated!!!

55 and starting to declutter. I would love to live in a home that looks like a hotel room. At the moment I live in a large house which is packed with useless stuff and it annoys me so much. But each time I start decluttering and want to throw things out I get the silly feeling, I may need this later 😢 Of course I know I will not, but its hard to outplay the brain and this as well us sooooo annoying ... 😅

In my opinion, the hardest thing is giving up some of the things from relatives that aren’t here anymore . Of course I will not give up the photos that are important, I will organize them but I’ve learned throughout photos that people have just taken of plants or palm trees of their trip but have no people in them. And of course I’m referring to the old photos not the digital photos I find it hard to even give up some of their clothes because of memories but I decided just to keep all of them for a while and then later look at them and give some of them away and take photos of them and then keep just one or two

I am struggling with letting go of old letters from grandparents, parents and friends and family from the past. How do I let go of these? I know when I'm gone and my kids go through all these boxe's of my memories, they're just going to be tossed out. What can you tell me that will make me feel better about letting go? Thank you for all the wonderful advice in your videos!

Letters are family history. If any of your kids are interested in it, they will be thankful you kept the letters. If they aren't interested now, they may change over time, because ancestry has become a popular topic. If not, it doesn't matter. You can still enjoy them now. And, if you have the time and energy, you might want to consider using them to write your 'family story'.

Your "memories to the heart" that mean if one has tons of pictures - those toys of the kids (who now in their 40's) just let go??It makes sense - for I can put all in organized boxes and when I go then what happens? Kids have to finally give to the trash man? If trash photos (I have most on CD's ) just throw out? If that is what you meant "keep memories to the heart". makes sense, right for after all 100 years from now maybe only one photo will even survive?

Here's a really progressive suggestion to maybe "get the jump" on downsizing the night before. Check out youtube's Jason Stephenson meditation for sleep wherein he actually soothingly states within the course of the meditation for us to "let go". For me, this has been a great help for sound sleep and also a great meditation for mental effectiveness.

I recently (on top of the covid-19 horror) lost my husband. Not unexpected but emotionally draining non the less. I had, before his death, begun to weed out some extraneous items in my life but with his passing and the isolating, it accelerated the process. And on top of that, we had begun preparations to remodel our home...well I am now living in a rented home while renovations are being done. Good and bad, many things are being discarded and lots of much needed organization is being done. A triple whammy, that's how things go sometimes, such is life.

I am having an absolutely terrible time deciding to part with things. I wish I could take them with me when I go. The photos, momentos, and artwork are the things I care about. The thought of still being alive without these things, which I can see every day, makes a lump in my throat. It also cast a doom over my existence, just knowing I am preparing for death. It does not help being a Taurus..... we hate change. Anyway, I am trying to come to terms with this, as I recently turned 76 and health is going downhill, I think.
