📚Description: A viewer of the show needed help getting one of the Gibson.com Exclusive dark purple burst 60s Les Paul standards down to Australia. I decided to let them know that Guitar Center just came out with a "Quilt" version for just a few hundred bucks more. Even though our first pick ended up being sold out, we still got a beautiful one from Musician's Friend Private Reserve with a nice wide flame / minor quilt pattern. This is a good one!
Guitar Center and Musician's Friend are owned by the same parent company so this "Quilt" version is available at both locations or you can get the cheaper "flame" top from Gibson.com for 2799 now!

    I agree Matthew. Plus just think how trashy those Murphy Labs will look once they get their true 50 years of aging on top of their pre-aging. I don't mind a road worn weathered guitar, but something about faking wear just never looks right. Especially not for the horrendous premiums they add on to it.

    @@tinystar3010 ditto! I've aged my Les Paul by playing, at home and show after show and banging on the drummers cymbals scraping on mic stands and it's got a story and still plays and stays in tune, same for my Strats and any guitar i have you bond with them THAT'S how a relic job gets done by playing!

    Couldn’t agree more! The artificial aging of a very expensive and beautiful guitar should be/is a crime. There’s no story, no history. Just a damaged/scratched up very expensive piece of wood. I was about to purchase an R9 that I thought looked phenomenal until I realized it was lightly aged. Ended up buying a supreme in trans ebony and a standard 60s unburst instead, and honestly, couldn’t be happier! Had they left that R9 undamaged with all the bs aging then I would have gotten that but I’m not buying my guitars for the aged look, I buy them as a piece of art that I want to look as new as possible. Let me do my own aging of the guitar with the time I spend playing it and enjoying it.

    4:56, that top is absolutely Book-Matched. It starts out that looking at the right-hand side is actually the bottom of the left-hand side's grain/figuring, the LH is a negative of the RH side, that is how it starts out when the top maple blank is sawed down the middle, folded open and glued. Then, after it has been glued to the top of the mahogany body the top needs to be carved back to make the "Dish" and "Belly" of the Les Paul's carved top. When carving the top more wood grain is removed from the maple cap/blank, originally the LH and RH sides where the opposite of the other, however, when you sand the maple top to produce the curve you actually sand wood away from the spot the tops used to match. It's possible to have perfectly matched sides and then have the grain fall off/less figuring during sanding as the grain lines diverge from their original look. Austin needs to take a Tour of the Gibson USA Factory. 👍

  • @tinystar3010

    @tinystar3010

    13 күн бұрын

    Agreed. I was thinking that looked like a perfect book matching too. And your explanation perfectly describes why the curvature has slightly less match to it. How deep the quilt effect goes can vary, and sometimes carving wood off will do that. Spot on HK!

    @@tinystar3010 👍 Also, much depends on the piece of wood itself as sometimes the figuring isn't as deep, part of the trade-off when using rare woods to make 1000s of guitars. Austin really should visit the Gibson plant. In one of the tour videos it was stated that some of the Custom Shop Historic Les Pauls' purposely have mismatched tops so as to replicate the practice from the early days of building the Sunburst Standards when they transitioned from Goldtops to the cherry bursts tops.

    Beautiful purple finish on this one. I have a question about the "case candy". They include, like most manufacturers do, a silica packet to absorb moister. But since the lack of moisture promotes fret "sprout" you'd think they'd exclude these packets, don't you think? It might not be a problem in short term use, but sometimes a guitar could sit on a warehouse shelf for years before it's pulled.

I think it also may have to do with many people that are able to afford Std LPs being usually older, it's their dream guitar from when they were young but maybe they haven't played for years and a 60s neck just feels easier. I also preffer a wider neck but it's just the way it is.
