@@itspodin But is it as flexible? Is it as accurate? Is it ass effecent? If you really wanted, you don't even need to buy a midi controller to make music, you can draw in notes with your mouse just as well most of the time. But playing with a midi controller is more expressive and human, more efficcient, and in turn good for the creative process, and often more fun. You could manually record your melodies with a microphone, extract the midi out one by one, and drag them to their appropriate tracks, but that's not nearly as fun, efficient, or accurate as this device, which does all that good stuff in real time, like an actual instrment. Not to mention this device also tracks your formants to macros to control other parameters, which makes this thing even more expressive and powerful.

Accurate and fast pitch recognition is very hard to do. It can be done with software, but not in real time, because it's slow. This microphone doesn't only do pitch detection either, it also detects the vowel sound you're making. Specialized hardware can do this job much, much faster than computer software, which is why you can't really do real-time midi conversions without special hardware (like the fishman tripleplay for guitar)

In High School, 1990, we had a box with a MIDI port and a mic connector that translated sound frequencies into MIDI notes. Such devices have been around probably since the early days of MIDI. Also, with dance music you definitely want a groove, a feel, swing... NOT perfectly quantized as that feels too boring. House has tons of swing to the timing of notes...
for live users: you can achieve similar results with option of audioclips: "convert harmony/melody/rhythm to midi". it is not as tweakable and not live, but with some practice and some midi effects (like scales) you can get some good results. at least, that's how I use it in order to capture my ideas

@ToyKeeper

It'd be nice if Reaper had a clip view in addition to its timeline view, but I haven't found that to be a huge issue in practice. The really nice thing is how the entire program is customizable almost without limit. It offers some defaults, but the main value is how the user configures it to meet their needs. It's like a build-your-own-DAW toolkit with a default theme to use as a starting point. So I can totally see how that would be uninviting, depending on the user. Most people want stuff to just work. But for a programmer or someone who really likes to customize things in detail, it's the most inviting DAW around.

@@skippityblippity8656 VOTE doesn't equal to BIDEN. Although Jacob hash tagged votehimout but that's just his choice so vote for who you want to have for president.

@@skippityblippity8656 yeah thats kinda true. Most musicians are really clueless in politics and most of the time they are getting things mixed up. But again its up to them to vote or not. Jacob might vote for Joe I might just vote for someone else.
Very Well presented video! Really summarised the tool in such a clear way. Been on this over a year and still feel like there's so much to explore
This is really a great review, thank you
I always heard it as "boots and pants" instead of "boots and cats." Also, I'd like to hear the full acapella version of this track, with all your recording sessions dubbed together..

Have just ordered a Dubler after watching this, this piece of kit is awesome!
WAAAAAA I've been hoping for something like this for so long!!
live jungle show with this would be sick
"MIDI guitar 2" is an ipad app that can transform any input (not just guitar also vocals,...) into the corresponding midi output. Might be a good cheaper option. Controlling a synth with voice worked reasonably well ;) EDIT: ok I tried it and it doesn't work with vocals as good as I remembered :D works good with guitar though.

Can i do that with garageband?!?

@@robertodumitru8716 I'm not sure garageband has MIDI routing, I'm pretty sure that at least mobile garageband hasn't, so you'd be limited to the internal synth/piano/guitar sounds. If you want to use an ipad, cubasis would be the way to go,or if you just want to experiment and don't need a full DAW, AUM is your friend.
very cool! I've played with Audio to Midi in Ableton, but the software here is waaaaaaay better for this. Thanks for the demo Andrew.
This is so awesome!
I think that a device like this is so good for turning ideas into music, before you had to take your ideas and transpose them onto a midi keyboard, now you have the ability to take those ideas and put them into a daw without having to think how to convey your ideas onto a keyboard. Great video as always, stay funky.
I need this. NOW
