    I usually make the ones that need to dry and hold their shape a day or two in advance. Like the topper and the Oh Twodles. The ears and big bow I made immediately before I put them on the cake.

  • @KarolynsKakes

    What kind of filling are you using? You may have to pipe a stiffened icing dam around the edges of each layer to prevent the icing from bulging out the sides. I do it a little different, this video is a detailed tutorial of how I frost my cakes. I don't have that issue when I do it like this. I also use American buttercream, not meringue buttercreams. So I'm not sure how different a meringue icing would hold up!

    When you cut out your lettering, how long do you leave your fondant out before you start cutting? I tried your trace and cut method a couple of times and the distortion of the letters made them unusable. Mine didnt hold up like yours do when you handle them to smooth the edges. I hope this makes sense. I am terrible at explanations. Sorry

    Are you adding tylos powder to your fondant? I know what you’re asking here. I have had a little trouble too, it depends on a few things. I hope Karolyn doesn’t mind me chiming in lol. This happens to me when I cut my fondant a little too thick and when I have not let it dry enough. I roll out my fondant and let it sit for a little while, like an hour. You want to take your sharp scalpel and lightly cut, not all the way through the fondant. Then go back and cut deeper, to the bottom until you are able to release the pattern. You don’t want your fondant too dry where it leaves a jagged edge when you cut, but soft enough that you can still refine the cut with your fingers. It takes practice, patience and Tylose powder. Using fresh fondant without tylose makes your pieces too soft to work with. Hope this helps. Add in: maybe you’re not using enough tylos powder too.

    @erinvolcsko4122 thanks for your reply! I do use tylose. I think like you said, figure out when its not too soft or too hard. I'm going to play around with leaving it longer and see if that helps. Now that you've mentioned the blade, I think I might need to change mine out for a new one. Thanks for your advice. Appreciate you!

  • @KarolynsKakes

    I never mind anyone chiming in! Are you using store bought fondant? If so, that may be your problem. It's WAY too soft! I ONLY use my homemade marshmallow fondant. I find that I get the best result with that. It's a pain in the butt to make. But it stiffens SO much better with the Tylose than store bought fondant. Here's how I make it: kzread.info/dash/bejne/m4h13K-goK3JabA.html And when I make decorations like lettering and numbers, I will add even more tylose to the fondant!

    @KarolynsKakes I usually use Wilton fondant. I make MMF when a customer asks for it. Don't laugh.... I have an issue with touching anything sticky. Lol. I also have a deformed, swollen finger on my dominant hand so I can't put a glove on it. I'm going to do a test and see if I get different results with the marshmallow fondant. My grandson is almost big enough to make it for me and that will be a big help. Do you store marshmallow fondant in the fridge or just air proof container? Does yours get hard overnight? I have issues and I. Trying to figure out why mine isn't wonderful. Going to check out your video. Thanks!

    @@boldfacedtruth I am very familiar with Wilton, I only use that for my little toppers. I realize I said “scalpel” haha, it’s like surgery but different, I meant X-ACTO knife 😜… Wilton is really sticky, gooey, and since I have worked with both, I do prefer to make Karolyn’s fondant (it’s my money maker). I do not have the same issues with hers. It really doesn’t take long. And I have a little issue with my hands from meds I’m on, so I get ya there too. For now, roll out your fondant and let dry for a bit and test an area with your knife first, you’ll be able to tell when it’s ready. I wish we had photos here so we can see how it turned out. Good luck 🤗

    Love, love, LOVE your cakes🥰 I wish I had your amazing talent☺️ but I can’t even get the marshmallow fondant to work like it does for you🥹 I wish you could share the exact measurements you use to make your fondant, maybe if I follow exactly your recipe I will get it right🤞

  • @KarolynsKakes

    @KarolynsKakes

    It's never exact measurements because the humidity is always different. I really try to get the fondant to wrap around the hook when I'm making it so I know it's the right consistency. Are you able to get it to do that?
