Moved out to a new city
June is dawning down on me
And all that I can find
A sickly romance in the air
Lovers stroll without a care in sight
Ooh, this can't be right
'Cause the sun's engaged to the sky
And my best friend's found a new guy
I'm only getting older
I've never had a shoulder to cry on
Someone to call mine
Everybody's falling in love and I'm falling behind
Touched the ocean, fell right in
Stepped outside and burned my skin
My life won't go my way
Bossa nova in my room
Hope that I'll find someone too to love
Because
The sun's engaged to the sky
And my best friend's found a new guy
I'm only getting older
I've never had a shoulder to cry on
Someone to call mine
Everybody's falling in love and I'm falling behind
Everybody's falling in love
Everybody's falling in love, oh
Everybody's falling in love but me
(One, two, three)

The thing about that line that's always stuck with me is that if even one of the infinite versions of Owlman had stopped the bomb from detonating right then, he could have sent it back to Earth Prime and detonated it there. Since the multiverse continues to exist, I think that means that *every* version of Owlman who gets to that point chooses not to save himself. And I think that means it *does* matter.

In my opinion the standout of this film is James Woods as Owlman. His cold, distant and relaxed demeanor really makes Owlman feel as though he's always in charge of any given situation and as if nothing will ever faze his calculating and emotionless nature.

This is James Woods' best voice work. Hades is his most iconic voice acting role but whenever Woods delivers a line as Owlman, he delivers it with the uncaring attitude of a true nihilist. And he manages to do it without being outright bland. When he said "There are alternate versions of me that you could find quite charming" some of Woods' natural charm seeped into the line without changing Owlman's overall demeanour. It would be so easy to just deliver every line in a dull monotone to convey that Owlman doesn't care but instead, Woods speaks with a silky smoothness and an underlying sense of danger which makes Owlman sound like a living, breathing being instead of a soulless robot.

Owlman is a Batman taken to 100% of his potential. Unlike Batman, Owlman ended his crusade. There is no crime in Gotham beyond himself. There is no rogue gallery. All of their cadavers are mounted in his trophy room, like some stuffed animals. And the ONLY reason Owlman does not kill Crime Syndicate is because their existence serves as a deterrent for others to try anything in Gotham. Imagine if Solomon Grundy/Killer Crock bursts into Gotham. What would Batman do? Be stubborn self and try to take on metahumans few levels above him. And then try to put them in prisons that cannot contain such super-powered monsters, or are ticking bombs. What Owlman does? Dials Ultraman/Johnny Quick and they turn that problem into paste on a pavement. Permanent solution. Batman has access to Godkiller armours, and yet reduces himself to “fair fight” with his normal street level gear. Owlman ALWAYS wears n-metal suit (think Black Panter level of durability/invincibility) with exoskeleton capable of overpowering Demi-gods. Owlman does not mess around. He uses every advantage he has to win, because that is cold and calculative. There is no fair - there are only survivors and corpses. Owlman is essentially Batman in every way but approach. He ENDS things. But does so at the cost of his humanity. He is stripped of any. Just raw intelligence focused on utilitarian goals, without any constraints. For Batman, means are above ends. For Owlman, ends are above means.

He had just barely enough time to abort the detonation, grab the portal gun and switch Earth's, but he chose not to because "It doesn't matter." Owlman is so underrated, and this movie finally does him justice. Until Dark Nights Metal, he was the most dangerous character in the multiverse-Batman's genius without Batman's limitations. The guy who can take down anyone, but now looking out only for himself. And ultimately, the only way he can lose is by Batman's morality. Batman can only defeat Owlman because he is good, but he will always defeat Owlman because he is good. Because caring for others gives strengths and advantages greater than willingness to kill or use a gun. So ironically, Owlman is a symbol of how good will always win, even against the evil that holds all the cards. And Batman who Laughs ended up proving that too-the way he was handled is how Owlman should have been treated long ago. I'm glad the movie pulled off what the comics never did.

I know he’s not a major focus in this film but I honestly think this ultraman is a fantastic version of the “evil Superman” because instead of just being a sociopathic, emotionless overlord he’s the evil equivalent to Clark Kent. The whole thing about Superman is that he’s basically just a neighborhood Good Samaritan but on an epic scale so here he’s the equivalent of that, that being a gang leader on a large scale. So while Clark is the sweet farm boy from Kansas, ultraman is inner city New York punk. Like look at the scene where he threatens the president, any other evil Superman would act a mad god threatening a lowly human here he talks like a mobster threatening someone for their “protection money”

I don’t think he believes he is wrong, but that it don’t matters if he makes a choice because other him will make the choice of stop the bomb, if his teory of how the multiverse works it’s true, so that “it doesn’t matter” show his nihilism to the end.

The climactic conflict is a great one, and only becomes more pertinant in the context of so many people thinking superheroes should be edgy antiheroes who readily kill and mangle. Batman's riposte - the title of this video - is perfect.

One thing I think gets glossed over is the real meaning behind Owlman's last line. Yes he is suicidal and accepts his death in that moment, but he also must have realized that if his conjecture about the multiverse is right, then that means that somewhere there must be a version of him who won that fight, and thus if everything can be destroyed by blowing up Earth prime, then it will happen anyway. And if he's wrong and it can't, then surviving means continuing to live in the reality he has rejected.

Fun fact owlman in 1 dc comic universe is Bruce Wayne's brother named Thomas Wayne Jr who tried to convince Bruce to help kill their parents for inheritance but in the end Bruce was against it so he killed Bruce too. Which when Owlman says" not good, never good, after all I'm only human" indicates that he really was Bruce Wayne's brother in that timeline. Making it more meaningful as it shows how the brothers from two different universes compare to one another. How their paths differ. How Bruce's life would've led out had he'd be alive and that while Thomas Wayne might’ve been more prepared with his gear and such( like how he was prepared to kill his parents) but he never quite had the heart Bruce has that allowed him to see the bigger picture and overall allowed him to continue fighting despite the disadvantages he had against owlman. In the end despite the fact that owlman could've continued to struggle like Batman he decided to give up which lead to his death. As Batman said "You blinked" indicating that while he is while he isn't bound by morals allowing him to be more free he still in the end could not keep striving no matter the cost the way Batman does. Since much like how Owlman have up on relying on his parents(which caused him to kill them) Bruce Wayne never did to the point where it lead to his death in that timeline.

I’ve been watching this fight a lot lately because I feel like it’s the perfect analogy for the duality of man. Owl man is evil because he’s completely lost faith in humanity and realizes how truly meaningless our existence is. Batman on the other hand acknowledges this but continues to remind owl man that you have to be that good man to see good in the world and no one else is going to do it for you, the challenge of being a good person is what keeps you going “you must’ve been a good man once” he knows that deep deep down inside owl man knows he’s wrong but he’s too afraid too admit it because he’s already come this far and done so much evil he thinks he and everyone else can never be ok so he has to wipe it all away. Owl man is just so hopeless and sad he really thinks that the nature of man cannot be saved. And I have to say some days I’m Batman but most days I’m Owlman

Both Batman and Owlman have faced pain and darkness in their lives, but whereas Owlman developed a nihilistic outlook and committed to a life of crime, Batman decided to respond by becoming a force for good and justice. When Batman says, "We both looked into the abyss," he's referring to the fact that both he and Owlman have encountered the worst sides of human nature. Yet when he says, "But when it looked back at us, you blinked," he is saying that although Batman was able to become stronger and stand up for what is right, Owlman was unable to endure the darkness and fell into despair. Ultimately, the quote emphasises how Batman and Owlman have very different worldviews and how their respective upbringings have formed them into the heroes or villains they are today.

I have a different proposal: Owlman was wrong. There might be gobs and gobs of Earths, but that doesn't mean each one was a branching path along human choices. Maybe Owlman's view was just that: a view he imposed on his data, rather than one that arose from it.

Being Earth prime the existence of all others was subordinate to its own existence. Under this paradigm ,once Earth prime cease to exist, so do all subordinate universes, all branches born from it. That is of course assuming the rule: "earth prime is the root of all universe and its existence is necessary to theirs" is true. But If not, then Earth prime is nothing special, and destroying it would mean nothing, as would this movie as its premise would not work - So it is best to assume this premise is true for the sake of the story, and the story set its rules.

It's hard to care when things often feel like Murphy's Law is just out there hovering over people and waiting for its chance to say "Here, hold my beer..." Many people I've met who claim to be nihilists or cynics do so with an austerity where it's more about claiming superiority over others, as if not giving a shit or distrusting people's motives constantly makes them some sort of edgy ubermensch. Caring hurts. Trying to do better, to be better, and to make something of what you have possess meaning can be painful. Take me for example: I spent my whole childhood being beaten down verbally, emotionally, and physically. I've run the gamut of human abuse. There were times I did struggle with suicidal thoughts and feelings. Even tried and failed a dozen or so times. And it wasn't due to some bright shining moment that made me stop. Hell, I only started to get better through neurological therapy that started repairing some of the systemic brain damage caused by untreated and unmitigated trauma. What made me stop was the congenial and caring nature of the people who helped me through that therapy. Hell, one of the TMS techs accidentally stopped my heart by accident by nailing the wrong part of my brain with the magnetic coil and his senior technician and I just laughed it off. Poor guy was so scared he couldn't keep his Mandarin and his English separated. I almost died due to a mistake from an entry-level employee and I just laughed. It was in that moment that I realized that I actually cared about my life but could still find humor in the risk of my own death. By that point I'd been car accidents, I'd been shot at, I'd been nearly trampled by horses and deer herds, attacked by coyotes, stabbed at school, set on fire, struck by lightning, drowned, and more. And what came closest to killing me was a TMS tech and a small wave of energy to the wrong part of my brain during a therapy session. It's the fucking absurdity of it all that I found so goddamn funny. And that's what helped me to find meaning in my life again. Just the sheer comical amount of shit that I'd survived and been involved in. Finding hilarity within the darkness and cowing my own inner demons into submission with a laugh. Because at the end of the day, when life gives you reasons to scream, sometimes you just have to assert a reason to laugh at it instead.

I loved this movie especially James Woods as Owlman. In college I actually wrote a thesis paper about nihilism and the multiverse. And it all did originally stem from Owlman's monolog to Superwoman in this movie. That learning about the vastness of the universe let alone the multiverse can create a cosmic nihilism that renders every decision every action or inaction meaningless. We become greater and greater at becoming insignificant.
