When you have a center, it is very difficult to influence you. Nobody every quotes praise, commendation as a problem. We do not realize that if others are able to lift your mood by praising you, you have already licensed them to sink your mood by insulting you. If someone can enter your insides by praising you, the doors have been flung open. Do you mind insult from strangers? Insult is especially caustic when it comes from someone known to you. You mind it when it is someone who has been given access to the insides. Don't be vulnerable to praise. Outside everything is changeable, inside there should be an unchanging core. You are alive only if you have something within which circumstances cannot truly touch. Others appear to be alive. But they are not really alive. Have you seen leaves fall from trees? Do their own their destiny? They are just ruled by the winds. Most of us are just like fallen leaves. We have no interior locus of control. All we have is strings which others are pulling all the time.
