    Hadn’t thought about most of this but I’ve always thought the final fight was underestimated. To be able to control the amount of strength he gains for that few minutes, that he’s never had before and never will again, instantly and flawlessly is bananas. It’s like getting super strength for the first time and proceeding to juggle eggs. Great video man!

    Azula, who is a firebending prodigy, admits that she can't beat Ozai in a duel. Iroh, who is also a firebending master, says he isn't sure if he can beat Ozai. She's also a mentally unstable young teen/child during ATLA..Ofc she wasn't gonna beat Ozai in a duel lol. Mental state has massive impacts on power output or ability to control your element at the level of skill you would be able to should you be in a sound mindstate under the same circumstances. Most notable in her case when she finally had a mental breakdown and was yes putting out tons of power but it was also during Sozin's comet and very unstable/all over the place. Enough so that Zuko was comparable to her in that state because he had a sound and resolved state of mind. I'm pretty sure Iroh would likely beat Ozai during Sozin's comet in a controlled 1v1 with no outside intervention with high difficulty if not ending up dying to swing the fight resulting in both losing..but since Iroh would be doing it in self sacrifice it's really a win for good and loss for Ozai. If they fought a controlled environment 1v1 without Sozin's comet I think Iroh would win with mid difficulty..maayybe high diff depending on if he slips up at all or if we're talking about prison ripped Iroh or fat Iroh. Prison ripped Iroh is build diff and would wipe Iroh frfr

    When it comes to Ozai's character, I've always kinda liked it. I can understand why people don't like him, but I think he serves his purpose. He's not supposed to be deep or have a backstory. He's not supposed to be complex. He's simple, kind of like actual dictators from our history. He lives solely for the purpose of wanting power. Everything he does is to gain more power, and to make sure his authority is unmatched. The amount of presence he has in the show is insane as well. I thought it was cool that they were building him up so much. He wasn't a character, but rather, an unstoppable force that could only be taken down by the Avatar. He is powerful, and intimidating. But of course, he was destined to be taken down by the Avatar, which is what happens. Again, I understand why people dislike him. He's a one dimensional dictator, but I liked that. I don't try to see him as a character to dissect the psychology of. I just see him as what he is. A pure evil incarnate. And also, a terrible father.

    people act like every character in a show has to be complex and very deep, while ignoring the fact that very simple people like Ozai exist in real life. There are people out there who only care for power. Ozai was the second son in a lineage of rulers who for generations have only cared for how strong they can get and how big they can expand their empire. He schemed and cheated his way into power and is very one dimensional. Its not a bad thing. That IS the character. It's not lack of writing, Ozai was intentionally written to be boring.

I miss the simple hero and villain days when you got a kind hearted good guy, little or lots of problems, wanting to give his time to helping those because he thinks it’s right against a bad guy who has little or lots of problems but is the entire opposite in ideology. Like in Star Wars, the big bad doesn't really appear or do anything until the final act, and all feats performed by his dragon - Vader or Azula - not only apply to but are surpassed by the big bad. Where I think a lot of the misconceptions about Ozai stem from is how he ascended the throne. He displayed an uncharacteristic submissiveness to his father Azulan in agreeing to kill his firstborn son, and then gained the throne through a plot by his wife involving poison and deception, with no firebending involved. A lot of people probably believe that this shows he was not strong enough to take the throne by force. But even if he killed his father in an Agni Kai, that would only serve to make Iroh the Fire Lord right away since it would be a public event and there would be no way to pretend that Azulan wanted Ozai on the throne. It was in Ozai's interest to get back on his father's good side in the hope of convincing him to make him the next Fire Lord later on rather than fight him then and there, even if it meant sacrificing Zuko. The poison method allowed Ozai to fake Azulan's will by being done in secret.

    I never knew the fandom thought Ozai was unskilled or a bad bender. I could understand the Iroh vs. Ozai debate having more people favor Iroh, since we see him more, he learned true fire bending, etc. Even then I thought the general consensus was Ozai is either #1 or #2 best fire bender in the series for most fans. I've never entertained that Azula was more skilled or powerful than her father. Ozai generating lightning so fast always stood out to me, since we never saw Iroh or Azula do that. I never questioned Ozai being the most powerful fire bender in the world.

    Ozai is, quite frankly, scary powerful. He might not be the most intricate or nuanced villain, but as far as serving his narrative role as an incredible, impossible, insurmountable wall for the Gaang to struggle against at the end (and being voiced by Mark Hamill, the most important narrative role ;P ), well, he excels at that. The skill section was highly interesting to me. Didn’t realize he had that much control and precision. That the lightning bolt he shot at Zuko, under only a sliver of sun, contained more power than Zuko’s chi in his whole body was shocking (no pun intended) and cool. Makes me wonder how, in relative comparison to Ozai, his kids ended up so much weaker and less refined than him… And Azula and Zuko are no slouches. Do you think if Azula, Zuko, and Iroh all fought Ozai together they’d be able to take it or no? And, follow up, do you think Azula could or would grow up to match him in her prime?

Every avatar could summon Wan's techniques, although it would be Wan's bending rather than theirs. @@WaterKirby1994 I´d really argue that even with the avatar state had ozai been smarter he could´ve killed aang, first, when Aang got on that boulder, Ozai could´ve cooked him alive from above or straight up used lightning from above, due to his charging time Aang wouldnt have been able to do anything because he had to keep the boulder strong he would´ve likely been hit by it with no chance of redirection due to the angle. Other win conditions for Ozai would be to use lightning against Avatar state aang, because no matter how powerful he´s in the avatar state the comet enhanced lightning will go through that sphere like it´s nothing and once it hits him, because he´s in flight and using multiple bending types, he will not be able to properly redirect the lightning back at ozai without a foothold as it´s literally impossible for any bender to redirect lightning on air, not even in legend of Korra do we see the feat, a foothold is always necessary because the lightning has a knock back eff on anyone who receives it and to attempt a redirection while keeping flight with other bending active will disturb and prevent the redirection process in it´s entirety as no bender can do anyother bending while redirecting, this is due to the fact they are already overcharged with Chi. Remember Ozai was such a threat every Avatar except Aang immediately went for lethal force in the avatar state, they knew no matter how superior in bending they all were in the avatar state Ozai would always have a win condition with lightning if he hit and it couldnt be redirected even once, the avatar would guaranteedly die, thats a pretty serious threat

    About the sensing feat: Ozai has the greater feat. There are people in the world that can sense storms coming due to pressure changes. My mom had a neck injury and since then experiences severe pain when thunderstorms are coming. It’s never been wrong. Ever. It’s possible that Iroh can sense those pressure changes as well. But that’s not a bending feat. As you pointed out, firebending isn’t outright gone, just weakened. It’s entirely possible that Ozai could still firebend during the eclipse, just not enough to kill with it. If a rank and file soldier is able to make a small puff, imagine what Ozai can do.

    Another great video. Yet, even still, I disagree with the assessment that Ozai is a poorly written adversary. He was designed with the specific intention to test Aang's resolve, pushing our pacifistic protagonist far beyond his comfort zone. Aang is a character who believes that, no matter the circimstance, every life is valuable. As such, portraying Ozai as a genocidal, megalomaniacal tyrant is the perfect final antagonist. Unlike Zuko he isn't misguided, nor does he have any redeeming qualities. Unlike Azula he isn't merely a tool for another but is acting with full autonomy. Unalaq, though a cool villain in his own right, is not a foil to Korra in the same way that Ozai is to Aang. With all this being said I believe that Ozai is one of the greatest villains in the series. His impact on the overall verse cannot be understated, even outside of his raw powerscaling. Ozai is unquestionably really powerful, if only for the fact that it resists for a not so short time to an Aang in the state of the avatar and also enhanced by Sozin's comet. Even thinking that Ozai's firebending is similar to that of Aang in those conditions is more than remarkable. I think the ability of lightning redirection is possible for most firebenders but as Iroh said, it is still very dangerous and quite difficult especially when dealing with energy output on Ozai's level of magnitude

    I don’t hear you pronouncing Ozai differently than how I’ve heard it. Great video! It really makes it significant that Aang took Ozai’s bending away. If Fire Nation culture values power and strength, then losing his ability to bend destroys his prestige. It also shows that, not only is Aang powerful enough to defeat Ozai, but that he is capable of taking away another bender’s power, no matter how skilled they are.

    Due to their culture, Ozai HAS to be the strongest... They have ritual battles built into their society at the highest levels! I don't agree with the statement that ozai makes double lightning, he is separating the positive and negative energy simultaneously in either hand and brings them together to get the discharge. This looks exactly the same as how iroh does it in his slow demonstration for Zuko. Creating lightning with the one hand should be impossible according to the lore established by iroh. Also he is visually only shooting a single bolt

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that people want Iroh to be stronger than Ozai, but this change would miss half the point of their narrative and rivalry. Like half of the reason Ozai wanted to yank the throne from Iroh was because he felt he was not only more skilled, but a more dedicated student. And quite frankly he was right! He was also willing to go waaay further for power than Iroh ever would have and THAT'S THE POINT. He sought power to the extent that it cost him his humanity and neay cost his children the same. Iroh ALMOST went down that path, but his repentance is WHY we adore him. ANYWAY with all that said, I love a good deep-dive & there are definitely points here I never even considered so. Amazing watch -- keep up the good work, both of you!

The Gaang and Iroh don’t even entertain the idea of fighting Ozai without either Aang or Iroh. Not to mention that Iroh is unsure if he could even beat Ozai. Even though dragons are thought of as the original firebenders, colloquially in the show “bender” is used to refer to humans bending the elements. When the people of Republic City felt oppressed by benders, this of course did not include the sky bison on Air Temple Island. Therefore, I don’t think it’s correct to extrapolate that the directors meant Ozai was also more powerful than each of the dragons. He could have been, but I don’t believe they meant to include dragons in that statement. I also don’t believe we have enough examples to say Ozai’s fire is generally stronger, because the dragons weren’t even trying to attack Aang and Zuko, plus it wasn’t during Sozin’s comet. Also, Ozai hasn’t been shown to be able to manipulate the different spectrums of flame color like them. To put out such a variety of energy in the same blast and also not burn Zuko and Aang was a masterful technical feat.

  • @FranciscoHOS

    @FranciscoHOS

    In terms of flame colors, as the masters of fire bending and being the original benders, it makes sense that the Dragons are able to do that as they're probably the most skillful at fire bending. That doesn't take away from Ozai being the most powerful firebender though, regardless if you consider dragons benders or not (even though in the show the animals that started the various types of bending are called the "original benders"). While I do agree that I think that dragons are probably the most skillful fire benders, the fact that they can be captured and hunted (and that the idea of one person, Iroh, as being capable of hunting and killing the last dragon (yes ik he didn't)) probably shows that a fire bender can be more powerful than a dragon at fire bending. That doesn't takeaway from the skillfulness and power of dragons either, because it would require an extremely powerful fire bender to be compared to a dragon (like with Ozai).

Fire lord Azulon had just died while Iroh was out of the country; making it easy for Ozai to take the throne. Iroh didn't bother to fight with Ozai with one of the main reasons being that his will had been broken and he'd been grieving over the death of his son during the siege of Ba Sing Se. Idk, man. This is a hard sell for me. I do believe Ozai is a powerful bender. But just think of how he would have performed against Aang without the 100x boost from the comet. He would've been no more a threat than Zhao, with some extra danger in the form of lightning. He's angry, brutish, just like Zhao was. His fire bending comes from anger, which was said to be less effective than the original source, the sun. Ozai seems to be a good fighter, but he's way too egotistical to be a great fighter. He almost gets clapped TWICE by lightning redirection. Once by Zuko, and once by Aang. He was cocky and got caught off guard, and either instance could've ended his life instantly. It was only through their good nature that he lived to tell the tale. Ozai definitely seems to be more mobile than Iroh, and I think that's def why Iroh felt anxious about his chances. Ozai is also younger than Iroh. But against more dexterous characters, that advantage is mostly moot. I actually think they overestimated Ozai's strength. I think his technique is good, but the source of his firebending is angry and wild. He's an adult in a highly militaristic culture. It makes sense that he's going to be stronger than his own children. Give them a decade, and I believe they would easily surpass him.
