My art teacher always told me to not create "such illustrative works" just because he liked the non figurative compositions. And most of the time I had the same feeling with the character designers as you did with the illustrators, that I really admire. Being an illustrator shouldn't mean you cannot count as an artist, and being an artist mustn't mean you can't considerate different creative approaches. Thank you so much for this video❤❤❤, the painting is just perfect.

My aunt, who is an artist who sells landscapes, said that to me in a condescending tone and it stuck with me for life. So for a very long time I didn't even look into illustration because it wasn't "art" but I finally came around and accepted that I like illustration AND that it is art.

You, my friend, are 100% an artist. Artists create. It doesn't matter in what medium they use. Fashion, sculpture, painting, drawing, clay, graphic designers, architects, physical, digital and so on. Illustrators are artists. Illustration is a pivotal skill in creating art. So rude and short-sighted of people to put you down to build themselves up.

@@reginaldforthright805 Bro make no sense, by following your way of reasoning every kind of portrait is a "copy" then, cuz it's a personal reproduction of a reference photo / image / reality . Even if you do a photo-realistic painting , you are still a artist because you are making something new made of paint in your way .. Require skills , hours of study , color theory etc etc and it's not something a lot of people can do . Painting is not a so popular skill.. do you know ? Also the people doing these comments, just wanna deprecate his artworks out of jealousy or i don't know what . there is nothing constructive about that . There is a reason why one of the most expensive painting ever sold is 3 stripes of paint on a mono-color background . i doubt you know that either tho 🤣

Is a Software Developer an Artist, since he creates something new? Aren't there a lot of people that create stuff, that aren't typically called Artists, like carpenters and other craftsmen? And if you called them Artists, people would simply be confused and ask you what the heck even is Art then.

  • @changemymind06

@scottyboy6269 Yeah, I'm sure it comes from a place of fear and pride. Being afraid their jobs will be taken and knowing that images created by AI are a conglomerate of art created by real people sourced from online, yet not getting by credited for it. I mean it's like people who say digital art isn't real art either (which as a traditional artist, I totally disagree because I sucked so bad at digital art I hired someone to create a simple logo for me). It's just people's opinions based on their own biases and lenses. There is also a smaller group of people that feel traditional artists will become sort of 'special' types of artists, such as stick and poke/hand tattoo artists vs. machined tattoos. Traditional art & DIY crafts will always have handmade qualities to them that make them special. think I fall into that category since technology isn't going anywhere, things change, & processes evolve. In such a fast-paced world centered on instant gratification, that is to be expected - AI art is only the beginning.

  • @scottyboy6269

@@changemymind06 I'm on the fence with digital art, MANY of them are just awful it's cartoony looking, then there's the fact a processor does a lot of the work...gradients, selection tool, undo etc. And they always leave the background etc "stylized". Along with many of them cannot do traditional mediums, which baffles me. But if I was paying anyone for artwork for a board game, video game cover etc etc. I would stipulate it HAS to be non digital. I want the original, and then there's zero chance of the crazy twitter mob losing their mind about AI art :D Plus oil paintings have all that amazing texture you cannot replicate until 3d printed paint art becomes a thing.

  • @changemymind06

    @changemymind06

    8 ай бұрын

@scottyboy6269 that's very true! I like your point of view. I'm of the same opinion as you as far as a processor doing the work, but personally, I wouldn't go as far as saying it ISN'T art completely - it's just different art. I have seen some digital art that makes you double-take, and one would think translating digital art to traditional would be easy, but I think both have their own idiosyncrasies that require patience and learning. I actually drew my logo but it isn't 'perfect' which is why I want someone to translate it to digital...although after my previous comment, I'm thinking of keeping it as is and enjoying the not-so-perfect line here or there. I already am more enamored with a graphic novel, for example, if I know it was completely done traditionally so I would hate to be an unintentional hypocrite! Also, 'art' has seemed to expand to mean how efficiently and well a person can do something, like programmers can be their own sort of artists and poets are word artists. I guess I'm sort of reaching now lol but I guess I just mean there is room for all sorts of art, and we are not required to like all of it.

@@scottyboy6269 digital art is becoming a must for any artist looking to work with any companies, they do not really prefer traditional in a lot of spaces now, doesn’t mean they wouldn’t exactly accept it, but the medium is becoming a mainstay no matter how much it streamlines the process, so is AI art, we just have to level with the times.

I think the distinction between artist and illustrator is the same as squares and rectangles. All illustrators are artists, but not all artists are illustrators. Artists can use any medium to make their art, whether that is paint, ink, clay, granite, wood or steel. Illustrators are artists that specialize in pictures. They are more broad than, say, an oil painter, but more specialized than the broad term artist.

I have always loved art - creating it and seeing work from other artists that inspire me. I could never stomach the snobby side of the "art world", however. So much of it is like "the emperor's new clothes" - someone can literally make a pile of trash, and as long as they have the right story and the right platform to promote it, someone will pay big bucks for it. I mean, if people like piles of trash, that's cool, but people who create other types of art shouldn't be looked down upon for being true to their own style and vision. I'm always fascinated by how you create such beautiful illusions - the strokes are loose, but precise at the same time. All your hard work over the years shows in how effortless you make it look. Thank you for sharing your process and thoughts!

I want to create illustrations, and yet I naturally try to make my work look too realistic. It’s frustrating.

I love that you painted a scene of Beetle Juice. I loved that movie. And your painting. My personal experience with the artist/illustrator debate: In the past if people ask me what my job is, I said 'I am an artist'. They always reacted weird and didn't know what to say. Most people have still the 'Artist is not a job! They don't make money and starve!' stance to the whole thing. Someone actually ask: "Oh yes? When did you have your last art exhibition?". (My personal stance to that is, you don't even have to make money on art to count as an artist.) Now I tell people, 'I am an illustrator'. People react very differently to it. I get questions sometimes like 'For Kids Books?', or 'For advertising?'. That's something they understand more. Also: Every illustrator is an artist, not every artist is an illustrator. ;)

One comparison to make is your art work against classical academic drawing. A clear and obvious diffrence. At art school we only worked in charcoal and always drew from life. Never from imagination. Never from photography.

Let’s just say the only thing missing with painting of some of the Greats artist that’s hanging in museum, are the numbers, I believe if anyone can create art that is appealing to people, you have earned the title of a artist, artists work hard to create, it takes years to be any good, know matter what your working in, some people take the easy way like letting a computer do it for you that to me isn’t a true artist. Illustrators are just as much a artist as anyone that can create and produce art people like and admire.

What a stunning piece of art. I watched the movie back then as a kid and even at this young age I fell in love with Lydia's style. As soon as I could afford buying my own clothes they all were black or red. Until today my wardrobe is filled with lots of gothic, avandgarde black and some red clothes. Too bad I found this video too late to buy the painting.

I'm perfectly happy to say I make Illustrations/Drawings and leave it to the others to decide if they can call them Art. Since Art isn't a thing someone can describe or touch. It's a statement of perceived Value in the field of Beauty, so it's up to them to decide and judge. Also, Illustrator is simply a lot less confusing and feels less narcissistic as a self description.

Can we separate Illustrator and Artist better in verbs then nouns? Craftmanship and emotional inpackt. Sorry for english

I think people don't really understand what art is, they don't know the parameters and limits of each profession. People think that if you paint something beautiful you are already an artist, and that's not how it works. There are even people who call themselves artists. To become an artist you have to study a lot, you have to master painting techniques, create something unique, and maybe one day you will be an artist.

The main difference between the illustrator, and the Fine artist is, that the illustrator will craft a well executed image of something familiar, that we have ALL seen before. Whereas the fine artist is seeking to be vulnerable and unpredictable, by creating something that has NEVER been seen before, even if they fail at it.

Thing is most of us have seen a lot of the things 50% that both fine artists and Illustrators do, not every single fine artist creates something that has never been seen before, and not every Illustrator creates something you have seen before.

@@sincorazon9920 The difference is that illustrators are hired to create images that are guaranteed to be “100% appealing” as a commodity to sell product to the masses. (that’s what makes it predictable). Not so much for fine artists. Their work is valued by its level of vulnerability and authenticity, that only needs to resonate with ONE patron, even if everyone else HATES it 🤷🏽‍♂️ It’s FREE to be ANYTHING it WANTS, including the exact OPPOSITE of appealing 🧐
