This channel is amazing, always coming out with something new and educational. I recently bought some rusty Weider standard plates that I was told was out of the 50'S . No kg.on plate only lb. Hope I can find a video on this great channel about these plates. Thanks!

No, I don’t have one about Weider yet. However, unless they are deep dish, most Weider Olympic plates aren’t that collectable. Fine for lifting. Just not collectable. Thank you for your support and kind words, John!!!

Wow! I never would've thought that Paramount would be more valuable than York!

Maybe not all Yorks but more than milled era for sure.

The most effective way to tell apart unmarked Yorks and 1st generation unmarked Paramounts is the casting on the backs. Paramounts 1st gen have more of a longer deep wavy casting streaks/voids on them. Especially since not all unmarked Yorks were stamped. Additionally, the marked second gen Paras also do not have these wavy streaks and casting is more grainy but smoother. Thks!

Thanks for doing this. But the mystery to me is how did you determine that the Paramount is a Paramount, since it is unbranded? There are lots of old weights, and lots of old companies, and if they're completely unmarked, where is your started point to determine it's a Paramount? What is your reference? Familiarity with those weights first-hand? Friends who have the weight (and how are they certain of its brand, if unbranded?) A definite identification from whoever you bought it from? Catalogs? (I have an old Paramount catalog, but it's not many pages and there isn't any closeup of the plates they sold, and it probably wasn't the same era as the plate you're talking about). Old ads? Might there not even be "imposters" of "imposters" (old manufacturers mimicking the forms of other "imposters", or even the influx of more recent Chinese manufacturers just mimicking styles?). I started collecting cheap weights, as I could find them, small ones, a few years ago, and there are lots of different kinds of small weights that are unbranded. Smaller plates, in my experience, are -- old or newer -- very often unbranded. I'm new to all this and, usually, I'm clueless as to the manufacturer if it only its poundage is imprinted on the plate. The same problem exists with old dumbbells, especially the "bun" style. Maybe you're the guy to someday write a book about all this?

I mostly learned about old weights from online groups like IronHistory.com and Facebook vintage iron groups. As for Paramount, they shifted production to Mexico and those say made in Mexico on them. So pretty easy to tell.

I just picked up a pair of 2.5s at a thrift store for 2 bucks that look identical to the unmarked plates but the numbers are on the bottom.
