Yo-Yo Ma: Elgar Cello Concerto, 1st mvmt
Yo-Yo Ma with Daniel Barenboim and the Chicago SO in this performance from 1997. This concerto will forever be associated with Jaqueline duPre, but YYM gives a performance that is beyond breathtaking. It is fitting that Barenboim is the conductor; I'm sure he feels this concerto is still in very good hands.

Guys, it's not JUST Jacqueline Du Pre's cello concerto. Just because someone else is playing the piece slightly differently (Their own interpretation, which is the intention from the start), does NOT mean they're playing it wrong. Saying so is disrespectful.
yo-yo-ma isn't blessed. he has worked hard to become what he is today. he's a wonder of the music world
152 people choked when they played this at a concert
Who’s still watching in 2020?

It's funny how you can easily tell these tones fill your mind with emotion. But what emotion? No idea.
Here's a picture of a man infused, meshed and lost in his own world of his art! A kind of love affair only he knows. What a performance!!
I'm tired of people making fun of his facial expressions. When he plays the cello, he doesn't just play it, he feels it. Playing the cello can be quite an emotional experience. This piece in particular is very sad and dramatic and if I were playing this piece with an orchestra I would probably be making the same faces.
I actually went and saw yo yo ma not even a month ago and he played for us students. My jaw dropped and all I could think about was trying to hold back my tears so YO YO MA wouldn't see me crying. He played the Bach cello suite in G major for us as warm up then played this as rehearsal and it was just amazing. He's a great guy and an amazing player.
Words cannot describe the emotions this beautiful piece draws out, and the performance by Ma is almost too good to be true. It is pieces like this that are the reason I love Romantic Era music so much, but it makes me want to go out and spend a few thousand dollars to buy a cello, several years of lessons, and find enough other musicians so I can perform this myself... All of which I don't have the time or money to properly invest. I guess buying this off iTunes is good enough
The explosion at 3" is one of the most beautiful crescendos in music EVER EVER ...
I wanna listen to this live once in my life. Just once!!!!!

Interesting story: Ma is actually the current "owner" of the Jacqueline du Pré Strad.

I love the nod of approval from Yo-Yo Ma at
Yo-Yo-Ma is like the chuck Norris of the cello.
He is the master of his cello, master companion one should say, and a technician second to none, drawing from his instrument the most fabulous range of sounds, paying due tribute in dynamic style to the beauty, religious- in terms of faith and inspiration- and primal earthiness- by way of his rootedness in rural England- of Elgar's divine work
It is truly amazing how Yo is able to take a piece played by thousands of others and make it so distinct as to say, 'yeah, thats Yo Yo Ma'. Brilliant.
Elgar's cello concerto is one of my favorite pieces of classical music. Yo-Yo Ma is an outstanding cellist.
