Work introduction
An amuse-gueule is quickly nibbled - and immediately it is clear: top or flop. Edward Elgar is popular in the German-speaking world primarily as a composer of musical palate ticklers, whether the first "Pomp and Circumstance" march or the delicate touch of nothingness entitled "Salut d'amour." Elgar, then, the master of the small form. But an ambitious chef who cannot serve a ten-course menu in addition to "petits riens" need not hope for a star. In composing, the possible ticket to Olympus is the orchestral royal genre called symphony. Elgar jittered towards it for decades. Although he proved in 1899 with his "Enigma Variations" that he was an orchestral composer by grace, they are still a series of many small musical tidbits. The great epic form, on the other hand, the symphony, that was a different kettle of fish. Hans Richter, world premiere conductor of the "Enigma Variations", once again gave the now 50-year-old Elgar the steam to overcome his fear.
And so the Elgar couple travels to Rome in November 1907, where Alice can announce on December 3: Edward has begun work. At first, he still blocks himself with his high ambitions. A nasty flu and the death of a good friend do the rest. And so Elgar returns to England in May 1908 without the planned symphony. But now the floodgates finally open. Already on September 25, the mammoth task is completed. The premiere on December 3 made it clear that Elgar had far exceeded the goal he had set for himself. The symphony thrills sonically, but the experts also overflow with admiration for the accomplished architecture of the form. Elgar has spanned great arcs not only within the four movements, but over the entire nearly hour-long work. Everything is held together by a motto theme that gradually forms at the beginning and returns several times in the course of the symphony until it leads to an apotheosis of dazzling radiance at the end.

I was raised in the late 1950s and early 1960s on performances by Boult, Barbirolli and Weldon of Elgar's works. How wonderful to hear an interpretation so grandiose, lyrical, passionate and inspired by a young handsome Frenchman. Lionel Bringuier is amazing here as is his interpretation of Tchaikovskys Symphony No. 6, also on KZread. I await eagerly for more of the same.
So much clarity. Much appreciated. When are you dong the second!
No one could write finales like Elgar did ! Great symphony!
Bravo, a most excellent performance of this beautiful piece. There is the best of Elgar in this symphony, it's always been one of my firm favourites.
But this is wonderful. Splendid performance. Thankyou!
First class performance, a superb orchestra and wonderful interpretation. Well done!

The striving... I can't stop listening.
Grad schon live gehört, jetzt gleich nochmal! 🥰
Lionel Bringuier stood in for Sir Andrew Davis. This symphony may have been relatively new to him, but he really has the measure of it and his obvious enthusiasm is infectious. A very heartwarming and well-played performance from the orchestra.

@@michaeldunlap2693Interesting to compare to Elgar's own recording of the work.
Struggling against itself. Almost perfect. Perhaps the ultimate British music.
Perhaps the loveliest passage in this beautiful symphony comes in the 4th Movement, at 46:00.
How absolutely wonderful!
Missed it when premiering! Beautiful! Edward Elgar: Symphony No.1 was highly acclaimed at the very beginning, nothing has changed since. English composer, wonderful French conductor Lionel Bringuier I like very much and impeccable WDR Symphony Orchestra - irresistible pleasure! Streaming it again while writing a comment. Thank you.

Alongside the Walton First, one of the two greatest British symphonies, and this interpretation is one of the best I've heard. So, I'm wondering ... might we someday hear the Walton First from this same crew? (Including Maestro Bringuier! He's a real talent!)

To Kiev, be safe and happy.
The theme that introduces the symphony and recurs in the last movement is the greatest ever written in a symphonic work but then again Elgar’s masterpiece is among the greatest of all time anyway. 😁 Personally I think a slightly faster tempo would be better, however overall it’s beautifully performed with excellent sound. Thanks for the upload.

Great interpretation and performance. The slow movement so intense and emotional. An inspirational conductor. His Tchaikovsky 6th here on KZread is also deeply intense and emotional.
This will soothe and moisturize the dryness o the soul, and evoke comfortable feelings and pleasure
Grandioso!

My history as a listener and observer of orchestral performances is that great music has often played stiffly and rigidly. The great musicians can do that. However, in doing so the atmosphere misses an element for the intensity of a work, body language reflecting the intensity of the work, not just skill being displayed. This orchestra added the body language. It was a bit scary watching it. Who might get poked in the eye or slapped upside the head. This added more spice to the performance to go with the intense body language.
As a Brit, this is almost superb music. Its almost as good as the Germans. I love the sad and noble sentiment nonetheless.

"Almost as good as the Germans"??? The first performance was conducted by Hans Richter who was Austro-Hungarian, educated in Vienna, a protégé of Wagner and knew a thing or two about German music. (He had conducted the premiers of Brahms' Second and Third Symphonies and Bruckner's Fourth and Eighth among others). He introduced Elgar's First to the players of the London Symphony Orchestra with the words "Gentlemen, let us now rehearse the greatest symphony of modern times, written by the greatest modern composer - and not only in this country."

Almost??? ‘This is superb from first note to last. An absolutely glorious piece of music wonderfully conducted. The love for this symphony is clearly obvious on the conductor’s face.
